I hate the True North chant.  Don't understand why so many people are shouting support for extremely wealthy people who are taking their hard-earned money to watch a very mediocre hockey team.

Gets even worse when you hear it at your kids' science fair awards.

It started in appreciation of bringing the Jets back.   Something that meant a lot to many people in the city.   Alternatively, if people don't want to pay for Jets tickets, then the team will leave again.

The mediocre part comes and goes.   I suppose long term we will find out if Winnipeg can field a competitive team given the challenges of a smaller market team.   Probably need to give a GM a chance outside of Chevy to really find the answer though.

I do pay for Jets tickets (mini pack).  I don't participate in the True North chant.   Don't begrudge those that do.

Monarchies are relics of the past. Time to do away with them entirely. You can't believe we are all born equal AND support a monarch of any kind. Ridiculous that anyone in 2022 thinks that royalty should still be a part of the modern world anywhere for any reason. Totally ludicrous. I cannot wrap my head around the love for them, never have and never will.

Any sympathy she and her family gets from me is grounded in the fact she didn't choose to be born into her family any more than we chose to be born simple peasants (in her and her ilk's eyes, anyways). That's about where it ends.

Screw kings and queens... families ordained by their imaginary friend in the sky to rule over the land in perpetuity, talk about eyes rolling out of your head jeeeeeeeez. I shed no tears for any of them, they can all go any time.

I have no love for the monarchy, and wouldn't care if they got rid of them, but they really aren't all that different then the love and adulation that actors, rock stars, and athletes get in todays day and age.

I mean the UK still votes for their parliament, so the royal family is just a figurehead.

Time for Canada to move away from the monarchs on our currency IMO.   If we have to change them all anyway, think we should move to something more representative of Canada.

That’s both really interesting and kinda sad. Considering the wear a football player faces and how much more money is made in the nfl.
I’ll have to check out mlb now it’ll be interesting to see how they do it with the minors.

NFL is also the only of the major 4 sports leagues to not have guaranteed contracts.   Weaker union?  Too many college players who could slip into game action as opposed to other leagues?   Not sure why football is behind the other leagues in some of these areas.

That’s true. And it’d be good for the league if they trimmed from the top 20% to fund it and reduce the entry limits.

any one know what comparable leagues pension is like?

NHL seems more generous than the NFL.

    Eligibility

You become eligible for the pension plan once you’ve skated in your first NHL game, or if you’re a goalie, once you’ve dressed as either a backup or a starter in your first NHL game. Once you become eligible, you’ll receive a game-played for pension purposes for any regular-season game that you’re on the Active Roster, Injured Reserve List, Injured Non-Roster, or have been designated Non-Roster.

    Simplified:

    • You’re enrolled in the plan once you’ve played your first game.
    • Afterward, if you’re on an NHL team and the team plays a game, whether or not you’re injured, you’ll receive a credited game for pension purposes.

    NHL Service

What you receive in the form of a pension depends on your NHL service – how many years/games you earn.

    • Full Service: You’ve been in the league for ten years and have received 82 games per season for pension purposes. If you reach this threshold, you will receive the maximum pension benefit, currently $255,000 per year.
    • Partial Service: You’ve spent time with the big club, but also in the minors. If you haven’t reached the 10-year full-service threshold when you retire, you’ll still receive a pension, but it will be reduced based on how many games you’re rewarded per season. Here’s an example taken from the CBA:
    image1.png

In this example, the player did not meet the full-service requirements because they spent some time in minors early on in their career, and therefore did not receive 82 games-played for pension purposes in those seasons. They’ll receive a reduced pension of $197,625 per year. This reduced pension amount will vary, depending on each players’ career length and games earned.

It used to be that Edmonton had 35000 minimum every game. The name change seems to have really pissed off that fanbase. Lots of complaints on social media about it. Whether you agree a name change was needed or not, there's no doubt it did turn off a lot of fans. Looks like they won't be back until this team is a Grey Cup contender. The previoius management really did a crap job.

I would wager it has more to do with how poorly the team has done over the last couple of seasons than a name change.

Winning solves a lot of those things.

I feel like it's all going to eventually end up back where we started, with all things available in one place, for one fee. It's become too congested, with too many subscriptions. I love having access to anything/everything via the desktop of my TV, but it's just too much stuff. Charge me whatever, but have it all in once place. I can't help but think we're heading that way eventually.

All of these streaming services won't survive and there will likely be some amalgamation at that point.  People will pick and choose or may even alternate throughout a year to watch different shows.

Netflix will be experimenting with a lower price point if you are willing to watch commercials.   If that sees high adoption, look to other streaming services to follow suit.  Then we'll basically be back to where we started.  Paying an internet bill, paying a high cable bill (in terms of subscription services), and having to suffer through commercials.

The losers in that scenario (besides the consumer) will be the cable providers like Shaw and Rogers.  So also look for you internet costs to go up to make up for the revenue they lose on providing cable tv.  :(

Rich, I thought I had picked Hamilton this past week but the board says I picked Toronto. Is it possible the “games” section is showing an error, or did I just hit the wrong button? Is there a way to check my voting, or is the “games” column the official record?

Think you hit the wrong button.   Here is the screen I see when I grab the picks:
