I thought the promise was that we had finally solved our centre problem. Top two centres for the two top lines.

Indeed, that was the plan when he was acquired in January 2021. Turns out Dubois is just a diva and had no intentions of staying here despite whatever statements he made two years ago, though.

We've been trying to get him signed to a long-term contract this entire time. He was obviously meant to be a franchise player.

Yeah, and didn't work out as I'm sure many would've hoped.

So, management did what it could in light of the lame circumstances and got three forwards* back in the trade. Seems like a pretty solid return for a pissbaby who clearly had no interest in staying here long-term.

    * Iafallo is under contract for two more seasons (UFA), Vilardi and Kupari are pending RFAs

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down race-conscious student admissions programs currently used at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina in a sharp setback to affirmative action policies often used to increase the number of Black, Hispanic and other underrepresented minority groups on campuses.

The justices ruled in favour of a group called Students for Fair Admissions, founded by anti-affirmative action activist Edward Blum, in its appeal of lower court rulings upholding programs used at the two prestigious schools to foster a diverse student population.

The decision, powered by the court's conservative justices with the liberal justices in dissent, was 6-3 against the University of North Carolina and 6-2 against Harvard. Liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson did not participate in the Harvard case.

The affirmative action cases represented the latest major rulings powered by the Supreme Court's conservative majority. The court in June 2022 overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that had legalized abortion nationwide. The court also broadened gun rights in another landmark ruling.

Sue Johanson, the beloved Canadian broadcaster who in her golden years enraptured a generation with potty-mouthed sex advice, is dead at 93, a representative confirmed to CBC News on Thursday.

Johanson died in a long-term care home in Thornhill, Ont., just north of Toronto, surrounded by her family, the representative said.

The broadcaster was best known for hosting the Canadian call-in radio and then television program Sunday Night Sex Show, which led to a successful U.S. spinoff called Talk Sex With Sue Johanson.

  4. It's hard to sift through all the misinformation out there, especially on social media.

I do, however, think it's fair to say the complexion of things in Russia has changed pretty significantly since Putin chose to invade Ukraine last February. How that plays out remains to be seen but I can't imagine it's going to end well for the current president or his beleaguered country.

Voters in the Montreal-area riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount have elected Liberal Anna Gainey to Parliament. (results)

Gainey beat Green Party co-leader Jonathan Pedneault, a political neophyte who was elected along with MP Elizabeth May last year to lead the party. Pedneault is on track to finish second.

...voters in the Manitoba riding of Portage-Lisgar have elected Conservative Branden Leslie to the House of Commons, CBC News projects. (results)

Leslie had a commanding 69 per cent of the vote cast as of 10:30 p.m. ET — a tally that suggests he's likely to trounce his main opponent, People's Party Leader Maxime Bernier.

...Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre visited the riding and used rhetoric targeting the World Economic Forum — an international organization that has become a focus of many right-wing conspiracy theories online — during a stump speech.

...voters have returned school principal and former political staffer Ben Carr to represent Winnipeg South Centre the House of Commons, CBC News projects. As of 11:15 p.m., the Liberal had about half of the vote. (results)

Carr was running to replace his late father, Jim, who died of cancer in December.

Oxford, a largely rural riding in southwestern Ontario, has been held by a Conservative since the Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance parties merged in the early 2000s. (results)

Longtime Conservative MP Dave MacKenzie triggered the byelection when he stepped down in January.

In an unusual move, MacKenzie and his daughter have endorsed the Liberal candidate, David Hilderley...

Speaking to the Canadian Press on Monday, MacKenzie said the party infighting has resulted in "the nastiest campaign that we've ever seen in our riding."

Mad Max got dusted. Again. LOL

Not to point out the obvious but you wouldn't vote for him. You'd vote for the Clown Party of Canada candidate in your riding.

Why accuse others of being partisan when all you do is **** on everything the current sitting gov't does, make awful excuses for the opposition and its "leader," and then tell the rest of us here that you're a moderate/centrist voter while proclaiming your intention to vote for a non-centrist candidate* who's said and done some very disgusting things?

Russia has already stationed a first batch of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Vladimir Putin says.

Speaking at an economic forum, he said they would only be used if Russia's territory or state was threatened.

The US government says there is no indication the Kremlin plans to use nuclear weapons to attack Ukraine.

Belarus is a key Russian ally and served as a launchpad for Mr Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

The tactical nuclear warheads are less powerful than much of the rest of Russia's nuclear arsenal. Mr Putin said the transfer would be finished by the end of the summer.

Answering questions after a speech at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia's president said the move was about "containment" and to remind anyone "thinking of inflicting a strategic defeat on us".

When asked by the the forum's moderator about the possibility of using those weapons, he replied: "Why should we threaten the whole world? I have already said that the use of extreme measures is possible in case there is a danger to Russian statehood."

Canada's population is expected to surpass 40 million people today, says Statistics Canada.

The federal statistics agency's "population clock" uses modelling to estimate Canada's population in real time. The counter is expected to hit the 40 million mark just before 3 p.m. ET on Friday, according to a news release from Statistics Canada.

Canada's population growth rate currently stands at 2.7 per cent. That's the highest annual growth rate since 1957...

Canada's population grew by a record 1.05 million last year and about 96 per cent of the rise was due to international migration, the agency said.

An out-of-province conservative group that has attacked the Manitoba NDP through billboards and mass text messages has registered with Elections Manitoba as a third party for the upcoming fall election.

The Canada Growth Council's registration comes days after the Opposition NDP filed a complaint with Elections Manitoba over alleged violations of rules governing third-party advertising, including that the group had yet to register and was trying to interfere in Manitoba's election.

The Regina-based group is also behind a mass-message campaign that sent images of attack ads, as well as text messages, to many Manitoba phone numbers last week.

The ads compare Kinew's policies to those of Singh and Trudeau, claiming Kinew would distribute "free heroin and hard drugs for criminals" and would defund the police if elected Manitoba's premier on Oct. 3.

The text messages refer to Kinew as "a convicted criminal" and allege he is "in an alliance" with Singh and Trudeau.

Current and past directors of the Canada Growth Council include former Saskatchewan Party officials, according to corporate records.

**** the CGC and their heinous misinformation campaigns.

Wheeler is a prime candidate for either an offseason trade, or to be bought out by the Jets.

If Rick Bowness and company feel as though a complete reshuffling of the deck is required, Wheeler may find the final season of his five-year, $41.25 million contract scrapped.

It has now been a full year since Bowness and his coaching staff stripped the captaincy from Wheeler, and just under two months since the veteran forward's year-end comments against Bowness' "disgusted and disappointed" post-game blow up.

A buyout would cost the Jets $2.75 million towards their cap in each of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, as Wheeler is over the age of 26. An NHL buyout lasts twice the remaining number of years on the player's contract, meaning with Wheeler's expiring deal, the team would need to soak up a second year of the $2.75 million.

NHL's buyout window opens on Friday, June 16 and runs through Friday, June 30 at 4:00 PM central time.

Tuesday’s Panthers-Golden Knights NHL Stanley Cup Final Game 5 averaged a 1.4 rating and 2.72 million viewers across TNT (2.47M) and TruTV (253K), marking the smallest audience for a Game 5 of the Cup Final in 29 years — since Canucks-Rangers on ESPN in 1994 (2.41M). That was also the previous Game 5 to air on cable. Keep in mind ESPN’s coverage was blacked out in host market New York, where the games aired on MSG Network.

The Golden Knights’ Cup-clinching win fell below the previous mark of 2.79 million for Stars-Lightning in a fanless fall “bubble” three years ago. It was also the least-watched Cup clincher in at least 30 years, falling below the previous mark of 2.90 million for Senators-Ducks Game 5 in 2007. (The previous Cup clincher on cable — Stars-Sabres Game 6 on ESPN in 1999 — averaged 4.45 million.)

Viewership fell a series-high 47 percent from Lightning-Avalanche on ABC last year (5.15M). Game 5 was the first of the series to decline from the 2020 “bubble” and the second-straight to decline from 2021, which also aired out-of-season (Canadiens-Lightning: 3.56M).

The full, five-game Stanley Cup Final averaged a 1.3 rating and 2.6 million viewers on the Turner networks, down 43% in both measures from last year’s six-game Avalanche-Lightning series on ABC (2.3, 4.6M). Compared to the two out-of-season COVID-era Cup finals, viewership edged Lightning-Canadiens in 2021 (2.5M) and comfortably outpaced Lightning-Stars in the 2020 “bubble” (2.1M).

Outside of the COVID-era seasons, this year’s Cup Final was the least-watched since Ducks-Senators in 2007 (1.8M) and the second-least watched in at least 30 years — ahead of only 2007 and Rangers-Canucks on ESPN in ’94 (2.4M).

My LG Smart TV lasted less than 4 years before the screen went black, moved back to a monitor of the same dimensions hooked up to a PC for gaming and TV viewing and couldn't be happier.  I found the Smart TV concept to be very simplistic, more controlling, both pushing and monitoring certain platforms, products and advertising, plus it was full of useless features that were never used, I think a better name would be "Idiot TV".  With a PC you have full control of the function and the viewing content, I honestly can't see any disadvantages especially with streaming becoming so prevalent.

Smart TVs usually have tutorials to help users maximize features and applications, similar to any other smart device out there these days. I can only speak from my own experience with GoogleTV (Sony Bravia XR A80J) but it ran a setup assistant program from the first power-up, connecting to wi-fi, set-up with the soundbar/subwoofer, and allowing me to sync it with other devices such as my smartphone (Google Pixel 6 Pro), PS5, and Nvidia Shield Pro* connected to the upstairs non-smart TV. The app sharing feature is particularly convenient, IMO. It's also fully customizable to streamline your viewing experience depending on what you watch, organize the apps based on usage/preference, and you can turn off ads completely in the settings.

I'm not sure if LG runs proprietary software but it could be similar to what Samsung does (which I dislike quite a bit). I can connect a USB flash drive and watch downloaded movies/shows on my TV without issue but I was unable to do so on my friend's Samsung smart TV.

    * I highly recommend the Nvidia Shield Pro if the proprietary software on your smart TV isn't making the grade (you can even use your regular TV remote to operate it)

Calgary Stampeders running back Ka'Deem Carey was placed on the six-game injured list on Wednesday, after he was spotted in a walking boot at practice on Tuesday, TSN's Salim Valji reports.

Karey, 30, carried the ball seven times for 42 yards in the Stampeders' 25-15 season-opening defeat against the BC Lions last Thursday.

Valji also noted that OL Hugh Thornton has been ruled out of this Thursday's matchup with the Ottawa Redblacks, and that WR Luther Hakunavanhu is considered a game-time decision, as he deals with a knee injury.

Defensive back and former NFLer Natrell Jamerson, who collided with a teammate in practice during the pre-season and missed the season opener, will also miss the game against the Redblacks.

Carey was an All-Star with Calgary last season after rushing for a league-leading 1,088 yards and 10 touchdowns.
