  • Fun to sit and watch practice today... Been about 20 years since I was last able. With respect to the late great Randy Turner, the king of Odds and Sods writing.... here's some thoughts: -Al

  • Just to speak to Wolitarsky’s character and just what a good dude he is … few years back, some friends and I went to go see him play at Earl’s on Main and we ended up chatting with him and Streveler …

Really easy to always say that there's some mystical coach out there that would be a better fit.  We've been through generations as CFL fans watching teams including our own who keep believing that.

Is there enough room for Shay+Smith+Novak or does one (Novak) end up on the PR?

Vaval has apparently impressed according to media reports about camp and can return, does he end up as a DI who is the extra DB and the returner?

In an interview yesterday, Novak said he has the option to go back to school if he doesn't make the team this year, but with the recent rule interpretation on draft picks, that doesn't guarantee he'll be invited back next season.

Pretty much every team leaves some vets home for the road preseason game.

This.

think the CFL could benefit from a third preseason game?  Doesn't seem like two games is enough to  vet the newcomers and re-vet the veterans while allowing the undisputed starters to grind the rust off.

(though I bet the question isn't "can they benefit from it" I think the question is more "can they afford it?"  I can't see pre-season games being big money generators.)

Instead of a 3rd pre season game, have a controlled scrimmage to cut costs. One team goes to the other team's camp & have it on their practice field, sell tickets, concessions, merch, etc.

No.

For the most part teams know who they are starting the season with.  Maybe a couple openings.  Guys are getting evaluated to make PR and get called back when injuries hit to make their mark in regular season and keep their careers going, or the next guy gets called in to try to take the spot.

First 2 weeks of the regular season are preseason still.

I think this is the best solution.

Prior to the early 80's the CFL played 4 pre-season games plus an 18 game schedule.

I thought that they only played 16 games.  Maybe my memory is failing me.

who were you playing for at the time?

Just checked and yes the CFL went to 18 games in 1986.

Looks like 86 was when they dropped to 2 pre-season games, I believe each team had 2 byes within the 18 week season.

You’re right, 16 games.

I prefer the 16 game schedule over 18. That's just me. I guess if they went to 16 games, the salary cap would be pro rated down accordingly.

Given our previous camps it isn’t ridiculous at all. We’ve cut guys the day after a ps game who didn’t play, who played extremely well, we’ve failed to play guys enough to get the rust off etc

I think game action and TC action both count for sure, but we have the games for a reason. Yes, we've sat guys that needed to knock the rust off, a mistake that looks like it hasn't been repeated this year. Not every player can play his way onto the team in preseason game action but some definitely can and that is especially true in the trenches. The skill guys can be assessed pretty well without game action, but it's tough to see what kind of motors you have competing in your trenches in practice.

I’ve spent years researching this and I am fairly confident that Booch is the Rock

Can you smell what The Booch is cooking?

We've been over this... Booch is either Travis Ortega or Tony Ortiz.. I just haven't been able to figure out which.

TIL Jake Thomas only speaks in the third person, and is REALLY hard on himself.

As he should be...you don't play until you are 49 years old without being hard on yourself, and being able to look at yourself from the outside in.
