CFL - Pre-Season - All Your Non-Bomber News/Talk - 2023

Better get this one going...

2023 RATIFIED RULE CHANGES

The requirement for the ball to be touched prior to ruling a rouge on a kickoff has been removed.

  • This change aligns the rouge rule on kickoffs with all other types of kick plays.

A safety has been added to the options for holding in the team’s own goal area.

  • When a team commits a holding foul in their own goal area while in possession of the ball in their goal area, a safety has been added to the options available to the other team.

The defensive formation has been restricted on kick plays.

  • The number of players within two yards of the line of scrimmage on either side of the long snapper has been restricted to a maximum of six players at the snap.
  • This restriction does not apply if the offence lines up in an unbalanced line or if an offensive player moves or motions from their initial position.
  • This restriction only applies to field goal and kicked convert attempts.
  • This change is in the spirit of player safety to avoid grossly overloading the defensive line on one side of the long snapper.

Avoidable contact with an official

  • It shall be illegal for a player, or an authorized member of a team bench area, to make avoidable contact with an official.
  • This includes providing a safe workspace by keeping the sidelines clear during play. Officials cannot properly officiate a game if their attention is being diverted to the sidelines in hopes of avoiding collision or injury.
  • When an official is contacted by a player, or an authorized member of a team bench area, officials will be permitted to check with the command centre to assist with a judgment as to whether contact was “avoidable” and if so, a 10-yard objectionable conduct penalty will be applied.
  • This change will allow the officiating staff to call these actions confidently with command centre help. It will also bring much needed attention to the requirement of providing a safe workspace for officials.
  • This change complements and builds upon existing rules regarding contacting officials that may result in ejections.

Move the drive start position up five yards in additional scenarios:

  1. Section 5A – If a kicked ball strikes the goal post assembly in flight and when Team B intercepts a ball or recovers a fumble in their own goal area, the next point of scrimmage will be the 30-yard line.
  2. Section 5B – Penalty applications with fouls in the goal area will be applied from the 30- or 15-yard line dependent upon the foul.
  3. Section 6C – When a penalty or ruling awards possession of the ball to the opponent, the point of possession will move up 5 yards.
  4. These changes align the drive start adjustment made in 2022 with other scenarios.

Teams cannot have players wear 0 and 00

Players shall be identified by the following numbering:

  • Eligible receivers will wear numbers 0 or 00-49 and 70-99.
  • Ineligible receivers will wear numbers 50-69.

Having two players on the same team wearing 0 and 00 creates significant issues with the statistical and scouting systems the teams deploy. This change allows only one player from each team to wear the number 0 or 00.

Well, when it comes to professionalism, it seems like the BC Lions might need a few extra hours in the PR den to sharpen their claws and tidy up their mane.

I’m told Kongbo was “not a fit in the room” & it was important for #BCLions to get back to the chemistry they had before the trade. This deal eliminates what was going back to #TiCats in the Dane Evans deal; a 4th round pick that escalates to a 3rd.

Team cheerleader doing damage control.

Yeah, not a good sign when they trade the players calling out guys instead of the ones who are doggin' it.

Halftime show could be a montage of Leafs playoff losses over the years lol

Geez Louise, be hard to fit all that in one halftime. Would have to be a series.

Rider players aren't liking all this lack of professionalism talk about the Lions and said "hold my beer".

For a 4th round pick.

Ties in with the Dane Evans deal.

From the Ti-Cats website.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Monday, the football club has acquired national defensive lineman Jonathan Kongbo from the BC Lions in exchange for BC’s fourth-round pick in the 2024 Canadian Football League Draft. Hamilton originally acquired the pick in exchange for Dane Evans on February 23.

HILARIOUS.........Hope the Leos absolutely tank. Kongbo tried to bring FIFO to the west coast, and got a resounding "meh..." Incredible. Really too bad we couldn't bring him back, where he belongs.

haha.....no doubt eh?...More I think about it...He's be a good 1 yr guy for us....be a good mix with the Jeff's and solid guy if one get hurt....Then next winter we sign Bennet and Kongbo from the Hammer as both should be Free Agents

BC has "star players"?  I thought Rourke left.  I would assume he's calling out Adams here?  Who else?

I’m guessing it’s more his position group.  So Betts, Menard etc

So Kongo coming back home once his contract is up?

i would bet on it

Oh boy, where do I even begin with the BC Lions and their so-called "star players"? I must admit, it's quite the challenge to pinpoint anyone worthy of that title on their roster. Adams might be the closest they have, but let's not kid ourselves – he's no superstar. As for the rest of the Lions, well, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack of mediocrity. Although, I must confess, there is one player who catches my eye – Jevon Cottoy. He's got a spark of potential amidst the sea of underwhelming talent. But don't get your hopes up too high, because even Cottoy's shining moments can't rescue this Lions team from their eternal struggle. So, to answer your question, I'd say their list of star players is about as empty as their trophy case.

should have signed with Winnipeg in the first place and avoided all of this nonsense.

What’s the situation with Stove? I know he re-ruptured his Achilles. I wonder if his career is done.

He done

So Kongbo took the leo's cash......thought they were serious about a winner and found out they have a few guys wearing sombreros...... decided to call them out.....gets a ticket out of town and is wondering what the hell happened.....

He should have talked to us first.....Maybe the money wasn't enough here but I think Kongbo found out this is a 'winner' in the Peg, compared to lotus land and that counts for a lot.....Should see him here next year

I'll never begrudge a CFL player for chasing cash but it sucks that Kongbo chose the Lions over coming back to the club who did right by him (on multiple occasions) so that he could explore NFL interest.  He'd slot in so nicely in place of Jeffcoat and be an integral part of our rotation.  Maybe he's not interested in being a "bench guy" and envisions himself a starter and chose based on that .. I remember there were some rumblings about that when he was here.

Regardless .. still sucks.

We could be mistaken that the Blue even offered him anything. I have a hard time believing we much cap space right now.

pretty sure it was more about we couldnt offer him fair value...bet he back here next yr

I really feel like they weren't expecting him back, or they knew he was gonna be and knew they couldn't afford him, but either way, the "kid" out of Regina was drafted to be a poor man's version of Kongbo because they couldn't bring JK back...

I'd be happy if Bennett could be a poor man's Fernand Kashama.
