CFL - Pre-Season - All Your Non-Bomber News/Talk - 2023

Better get this one going...

2023 RATIFIED RULE CHANGES

The requirement for the ball to be touched prior to ruling a rouge on a kickoff has been removed.

  • This change aligns the rouge rule on kickoffs with all other types of kick plays.

A safety has been added to the options for holding in the team’s own goal area.

  • When a team commits a holding foul in their own goal area while in possession of the ball in their goal area, a safety has been added to the options available to the other team.

The defensive formation has been restricted on kick plays.

  • The number of players within two yards of the line of scrimmage on either side of the long snapper has been restricted to a maximum of six players at the snap.
  • This restriction does not apply if the offence lines up in an unbalanced line or if an offensive player moves or motions from their initial position.
  • This restriction only applies to field goal and kicked convert attempts.
  • This change is in the spirit of player safety to avoid grossly overloading the defensive line on one side of the long snapper.

Avoidable contact with an official

  • It shall be illegal for a player, or an authorized member of a team bench area, to make avoidable contact with an official.
  • This includes providing a safe workspace by keeping the sidelines clear during play. Officials cannot properly officiate a game if their attention is being diverted to the sidelines in hopes of avoiding collision or injury.
  • When an official is contacted by a player, or an authorized member of a team bench area, officials will be permitted to check with the command centre to assist with a judgment as to whether contact was “avoidable” and if so, a 10-yard objectionable conduct penalty will be applied.
  • This change will allow the officiating staff to call these actions confidently with command centre help. It will also bring much needed attention to the requirement of providing a safe workspace for officials.
  • This change complements and builds upon existing rules regarding contacting officials that may result in ejections.

Move the drive start position up five yards in additional scenarios:

  1. Section 5A – If a kicked ball strikes the goal post assembly in flight and when Team B intercepts a ball or recovers a fumble in their own goal area, the next point of scrimmage will be the 30-yard line.
  2. Section 5B – Penalty applications with fouls in the goal area will be applied from the 30- or 15-yard line dependent upon the foul.
  3. Section 6C – When a penalty or ruling awards possession of the ball to the opponent, the point of possession will move up 5 yards.
  4. These changes align the drive start adjustment made in 2022 with other scenarios.

Teams cannot have players wear 0 and 00

Players shall be identified by the following numbering:

  • Eligible receivers will wear numbers 0 or 00-49 and 70-99.
  • Ineligible receivers will wear numbers 50-69.

Having two players on the same team wearing 0 and 00 creates significant issues with the statistical and scouting systems the teams deploy. This change allows only one player from each team to wear the number 0 or 00.

I don't like to see this. It's really lame because j hate chris Jones but for the viability of the league, we need the elks to win some games

the Elks' RB Brown is a dangerous player.  Was impressed when I watched him play last year.  Real explosive runner with a next-level burst, guy who could feast in the flats.

He'll be judged on his flexes. Nothing more, nothing less.

Elks receiving corp could be....could.....be top 4 in league...Lewis is good....Dunbar is a nice compliment...but Moore?...meh...dime a dozen player...Mitchell...lets see what he does in more games....guys like him have come and gone before...need to sustain...I do like that running back....but big....Huge question mark with QB's there....and is that O-line a dominant unit....time will tell...I'd rank them just below the stamps...and just above the Riders in terms of receiving groups in the west...and not sure what they have for depth behind the starters....

Thats what I like about our unit...with what we know from last year...BOLO, Agudosi and Mcrae can be more than adequate replacements behind our starters, and we have some interesting talent competing beyond them this yr as well

man how times have changed.  In 2013 BOLO would've been our top national on O...

It’s certainly going to be more balanced and not nearly as old as their core was in camp last year. More grey hair in the wr core last year than the coaching staff for tc.
I don’t expect much from a mcadoo offense but it’ll be interesting to see if heavy balls can grow and  improve.

I could see him taking a big step forward this year. He was so good and smooth in limited action last year. Really excited to see what he can do.
Being able to wait and develop guys like him is a tremendous luxury, not to mention having great guys for him to learn from. As the ratio quality goes so goes the team.

Yeah BOLO just looks polished and legit as a bigger bodied receiver...hand catcher...fluid....strong....high high upside....and a legitimate target when on the field...we lose nothing when he is getting reps, and is only gonna get better...loved that draft pick from day 1

First over all pick and just a day or two ago the team 14th over all pick they traded for a lber retired at 23.

Was this a Joe Mack pick?? What a waste of a 1st overall pick lol. We took Dobson 2 picks later.

I think this is going to be a big year for Dobson and Eli.

Elks claim they averaged 20,000 fans a game last year. Who are they kidding??

Is that ticket sales...or actual bums in seats?...I could see it, as likely a lot of people bought tickets..seasons/flex's etc...and chose not to waste more money actually going there...good thing they had a massive war chest of loot to cover losses the last 3-4 yrs

I think it’s total fans in existence last year.

things are gonna get ugly fast over the next two years if edm doesn’t get better.

I'll state the obvious, at least to me, they need a damn QB to excel not to manage.

Honestly almost every bad team needs that. They need a miracle. I worry that even winning alone might not turn things around quickly for them.

Milanovich to ham seems strange. That staff has been together for a while. I can’t see them axing Coach o mid season little on doing so and replacing him with Scott. But I feel like confusion with what ham is trying to do has become the new norm.

The state of the CFL in Alberta right now is a little concerning. Calgary is quickly becoming a tire fire, and Edmonton with a multi-million dollar loss....yikes.

Cgy is a flat out embarrassment. That stadium is an eye sore and the attendance was pitiful last year. This year they're actually going to "hide" seats under banners like they do in BC place...I know it's a pipe dream, but I'd love for the CFL to force the owner to spending some real money on the team or selling tovsomeone who actually wants to be here.

perhaps they could go with a community model like the Bombers, rather than having an owner?

The Tican’ts have Milanovich on the staff now?  No funny business there.

it started by allowing that lunatic Chris Jones back into the fold.  Imagine if that idiot was brought in to replace the Canadian mafia?  IGF would become a ghost town too.  The team before Jones was a  dumpster fire too. Edmonton has been stepping on rakes now for too long.
