And to be clear on this - what PP said was based on zero information.  The Right cannot stop turning every isolated incident (real or not) into a national crisis.  See also - immigrant caravans, Hunter Biden's laptop...

The convoy’s three-week occupation of downtown Ottawa clogged the capital and prompted the government to invoke the Emergencies Act before police cleared the blockades.

It’s hard to say how successful the Russian propaganda campaign was, but for the first time, we can see how it operated.

Russian state-funded propaganda outlet RT (formerly Russia Today), which has been called an “information weapon” by its own editor-in-chief, produced a higher volume of convoy-related coverage than any other international media outlet. Fox News stepped up to produce the second-highest amount of coverage just as Russian propaganda decreased.

RT sent correspondents to do on-the-ground reporting in Canada, which mostly consisted of interviews with convoy organizers and supporters. The sympathetic coverage and “exclusive” interviews with convoy participants cultivated support for the convoy, and as a result, RT’s coverage was shared relatively widely on social media by Canadian supporters. Connecting with domestic influencers and encouraging them to share foreign propaganda is a known tactic associated with foreign influence campaigns. It’s also a way to make foreign propaganda appear more legitimate to local audiences.

 

As the U.S. Department of State explains, outlets like RT disguise themselves as conventional media outlets to provide “disinformation and propaganda support for the Kremlin’s foreign policy objectives.”

It is well documented that Russia tries to exploit domestic protest movements in an attempt to destabilize western democracies. It has been caught using a variety of tactics: providing support for certain politicians and political groups, starting local activist groups, even organizing rallies as it did south of the border, promoting Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter rallies on Facebook. Propagandists conspired to infiltrate BLM groups — for example, in one case, they insinuated themselves into a Baltimore group, contacting local activists who pretty quickly figured out that something was wrong. Russia has also produced and amplified media reports, created deceptive social media personas and more. Russian operatives have been known to work both sides of divisive issues by providing support for protesters while also inciting violence against them.

"We are aware of the information you are reporting," said spokesperson Jacqueline Roby. She added that the CBSA "is in contact with the United States regarding irregular migration issues." 

In another written exchange, the CBSA repeated the same message while instructing Radio-Canada to contact the U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP).

Subsequently, a member of the CBSA contacted Radio-Canada by phone to find out its sources — which it did not disclose. The member also said the CBP had called the CBSA about the situation following Radio-Canada's inquiries.

...Canadian officials have remained tight-lipped. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) would "not confirm or deny such information."

"For reasons of protecting our ongoing criminal investigations, we cannot comment on this type of situation," said RCMP spokesperson Charles Poirier.

For its part, the CBP said it takes "all allegations of misconduct very seriously" and stresses that a "thorough investigation" is underway.

Nearly 100,000 people have come to Canada to claim asylum since the start of last year, either through Roxham Road or by air.

I'm surprised this **** continues to fly under the radar as much as it does.

CBC did a piece on this Roxton border crossing late last summer.

Here's the issue as I see it. 

Someone expresses their hate, their lunacy, their absurdness, their drivel void of any factual information and critical thinking.

This someone is anyone. It happens with all types of people depending on the issue at hand.

They then are rightfully called on it. Over my life time, I've been called on my absurdness and I've deserved it. If anyone says they've never expressed drivel and been rightfully called on it they are fooling themselves.

Nowadays there's a huge shift in how we deal with absurdity. Something remarkably happens now.

Others come in hot saying the people who are calling out this lunacy aren't showing civility and aren't willing to hear other perspectives.

The problem isn't the absurdness being expressed. The problem is calling out the absurdness.

That to date is our current landscape.

There has always been dissenting opinions about damned near anything, but the difference these days is that the loonies can find mutual reinforcement from each other vis electronic media and media and political agitators who profit from this. This instills a sort of mob mentality and results in escalating rhetoric and threats as well as actual violence.

It's not only self-identified loonies mutually reinforcing each other in plain sight.

It's also some people presenting themselves as not supporting these loonies with a quick 'yea they're bad' and spend a lot more time and energy coming in real hot slagging the ones calling out these loonies because 'everyone's bad' and we aren't seeing it and/or acknowledging it.

In reality it reinforces these loonies by casting attention away from them, diminishing the enormous negative impacts they are having on our our social fabric of human interaction.

The two proxy sites republished each other’s content, as well as articles from other Russian proxy sites, demonstrating the tightly connected and co-ordinated nature of Russia’s disinformation ecosystem.

In January and February 2022, a large number of public Telegram channels were created or repurposed under the auspices of supporting the “Freedom Convoy.” These channels initially shared information about the convoy route(s), solicited donations, discussed ongoing convoy-related events, expressed opinions about politics and COVID restrictions, posted links to news stories, spread conspiratorial content, shared calls to action and encouraged people to take part in the protests. But over time, many of these channels — including some with tens of thousands of members — started to feature Russian propaganda intermingled with convoy-related content.

Many of the conspiracy theories posted in these channels either originated from or circulated widely in Russian propaganda networks, including allegations that COVID-19 is a bioweapon and/or that Russia invaded Ukraine to shut down U.S.-backed biolabs, claims that Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election was a hoax and various conspiratorial narratives about COVID vaccines, 5G technology and tracking chips. Some of the most widely shared content on these channels portrays the Canadian government as being overrun with Nazis and claims Canada supports Nazis in Ukraine. These claims align with some of the most dominant propaganda narratives used by Russia to justify its invasion of Ukraine.
