Canadian Politics

I didn't think we had a thread for this.

Is Trudeau this out of touch or does he just not care?

Justin has stated many times that he admires China. He clearly leans left on the political scale. His Dad was a fan of socialism. I'm not shocked he tried to grab some dictatorial powers.

For the record, China is NOT a socialist or communist government. It is a dictatorship run by the rich and powerful. And please supply a citation for Trudeau's admiration for China.

Trudeau is attempting to create extraordinary powers so the Fed. govt. can react quickly and move decisively to combat the virus, without having to argue through every bullet point with the CPC who most likely want to take advantage of the opportunity to create dissension and make political hay.   For example, forcing people to stay home and locking down the streets is a  madly unpopular idea with many people, it will be extremely difficult to  get a consensus to do this in a minority government situation, even though it could well be the  swiftest solution to getting the virus under control and ultimately save the most lives.

You don't have an issue with this for 18 months?

Seriously...? Digging up a partial quote from nearly seven years ago...? I will absolutely not defend the Liberals' attempt to grab power, albeit temporarily, at such an uncertain time but reaches like that aren't good for anything.

Here's what he actually said back then: https://globalnews.ca/news/3899392/trudeau-admires-most-not-china/

Quote

“You know, there’s a level of admiration I actually have for China because their basic dictatorship is allowing them to actually turn their economy around on a dime and say ‘we need to go green fastest…we need to start investing in solar.’ I mean there is a flexibility that I know Stephen Harper must dream about of having a dictatorship that he can do everything he wanted that I find quite interesting.

But if I were to reach out and say which kind of administration I most admire, I think there’s something to be said right here in Canada for the way our territories are run. Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and the Yukon are done without political parties around consensus. And are much more like a municipal government. And I think there’s a lot to be said for people pulling together to try and solve issues rather than to score points off of each other. And I think we need a little more of that.”

He didn't say it "many times," either. He said it once. Context is indeed everything. (https://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/fuss-over-justin-trudeaus-china-comment-a-lesson-for-liberal-leader-expert/)

However long it takes, you seem to think the problem will be solved within 60 days, I'm guessing it won't.

Thanks for assuming. My point was that I feel doing this for a shorter period would be fine, say 2-4 months and then reevaluate. 18 months feels like a power grab.

I was wondering why #boycottgianttiger was trending.

Wab is about as qualified for public office as I am.   And I never tried to kill anyone or beat up a cabbie.

Every communist government in history has turned into a dictatorship.

The Conservative Party suspends leadership race, including cancellation of upcoming debates and the June 27th leadership event.

Scheer force is back baby!

His Dad wasn't a socialist. He was a Communist. Spent time studying in Moscow in the 50's.

That is probably because no national government has implemented Communism as envisioned by Karl Marx. All of the national leaders thus far have utilized communism as a pretext to mobilize people as an ideal but once in power, most despots have a very difficult time relinquishing it. Any form of government, once installed and supported unquestioningly by their followers, will gravitate towards authoritarianism- the example we have in front of us is Trump.

Given what's going on, they should take a pay cut. They currently make $178,900. It will be $182,000 after the raise. You could cut that back to say $150,000, heck or $125,000. Still an amazing salary for most Canadians. Plus it would show your concern for the average person.

No one's going to vote down a pay raise :D

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer are among the MPs who are promising to donate an automatic increase in their salaries to charity, as the COVID-19 pandemic ravages the economy and puts thousands of Canadians out of work.

Must be nice to get mandatory pay raises every ******* year.

OTTAWA — An internal audit of outgoing Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s expenses has found he spent $18,000 a year of party money on private parochial school for four of his children.

The special examination also determined Scheer spent party funds on hiring an extra housekeeper for the Opposition leader’s residence of Stornoway, clothes for his family, their minivan and private security, a senior Conservative source told The Canadian Press.

There is no good reason for the public to own firearms whose only design purpose is to kill people. Yes, anyone could use a hunting rifle to go on a killing spree, but sociologically, getting rid of people-killing guns causes a shift in public consciousness for the better, as the Australian example shows.
