  • This is a good trade. Struggling player for a highish draft pick which is something this team could always use and you get another player who might play. That's two real good trades by Walters. Kudos.

I like Neufeld better at tackle if he's starting.

Wow...The Riders second rounder will likely be the 10th overall pick...almost like a first round pick.

Bombers will probably have the top 2 picks in the 2nd round.

Given that we gave up our first rounder, the Riders second rounder IS a first rounder.

Wouldn't it be the 9th overall pick?  Our 1st rounder is forfeited, not traded.

Or are you assuming they end up with more wins then us?   :)

Let's hope not... but if it does happen, we better not pass on any more Waud's

Bc and Montreal aren't good either. Really one of those 3 teams will be playoff bound. We aren't out of it by a long shot and still play bc and Montreal once more. It ain't over

True.  I was being uncharacteristically pessimistic.

Yes would be 9th overall. Forgot about Waggoner when I posted that. Very nice trade by Walters.

I like this trade and I hope it means we are considering starting 3 American OL.

It's too bad that we put 5 years into Greaves and then he's gone for a second round pick but what can you do?  Gotta make a move if it's not working out anymore.

It's too bad greaves got worse and not better. Good guy. Wish him luck in Edmonton but he wasn't very good this year or last year even

For a guy who was a late round pick and a DL as a college guy. Its a really a credit to him to hang around as for as long as he has.

We might get lucky and some playoff bound might need a veteran centre :P

Fixed for yea. :)

Hey, we picked him up in the 5th or 6th round, got years of service out of him, and have now flipped him for a starter-ish, and a second rounder. That's pretty impressive.

That is one hell of a deal.

^ said it. this is a massive steal. Id be thrilled if we had gotten either the pick or capers.

Good trade for Walters be interesting to see if Greaves plays better under a different OC schemes.

Sure its not a bad result, better than cutting him in his first training camp like most 6th round picks. But I'd rather have a competent starting left guard than a second round pick at the moment.

I would have traded Greaves straight up for the pick, but not just for Capers.

That is one hell of a deal.

Can you elaborate? I'm not familiar with Capers.

Capers scouting report from 2010:

Selvish Capers started his collegiate career at West Virginia as a tight end. He played there as a redshirt freshman in 2006 in a limited capacity. During the off-season (heading into the 2007 campaign), Capers was moved to the offensive line. Capers started that season as a back up, but by the middle of the season he secured the starting position at right tackle and has been there ever since. Capers has helped pave the way for some great rushing offenses. In 2006, the Mountaineers ranked third in the nation in rushing offense. In 2008 the team ranked 15th in the nation. Capers deserves a lot of credit for those impressive numbers. Capers has a little room to put on more weight and at this point he is better suited as a right tackle rather than a left tackle; that will move him down most draft boards.

Capers is certainly a capable player who has great footwork, yet his best asset is his ability to stay healthy. Capers has been a starter since the 2007 season and has not missed a game since. Capers is not one of the top linemen in this class, but he could develop into a quality NFL player sooner or later, and that should make him worth a mid or late round selection. 1/24 Update: Capers finished the 2009 season relatively strong and that has led to some NFL scouts taking notice. Capers is still not one of the best offensive tackles around, but he has been invited to the NFL Combine and he can certainly work his way up into the second round with a good showing in Indianapolis. Mostly he needs to show the NFL that he can be a consistent pass blocker since he played college ball on a team that loved to run the ball.

4/10 Update: Unfortunately for Capers, he has not proven to be a consistent pass blocker. There is no doubt he has quick feet and a surprising amount of athleticism for a player his size, but offensive tackles have to block. A zone blocking scheme will cover up some of his short comings, but he is probably a couple years away from seriously contributing to an NFL team. However, he does have a high ceiling and somebody should be willing to take a chance on him around the fourth round.

Another from 2010:

Strengths:  Prototypical build and athleticism for a left tackle. Has the quick feet necessary to compete with even the elite speed rushers at the next level. A converted tight end.

Weaknesses:  Extremely inconsistent. still learning the position. Run blocking in marginal; doesn't have the brute strength to knock guys backwards and create running lanes.

Comments:  Capers is a prime candidate to come off the board far too early. Teams are always looking for potential left tackles and when a player shows the raw physical skills necessary to play the position, they come off the board too soon (see: Duane Brown, Tony Ugoh, etc). If Capers is still on the board by the 4th round (which he won't be) then he would be a nice developmental selection. He does show potential, but he isn't ready for the NFL game just yet.

And another:

Bio: Full-time starter the past two seasons after playing six games with the first team as a sophomore. All-Conference selection as a senior.

Positive: Former college tight end who has shown a lot of potential the past two seasons at offensive tackle. Bends his knees, blocks with leverage, and keeps his feet moving throughout the action. Fluid sliding out laterally in pass protection, uses his frame to seal defenders from the action or knocks them from their angle of attack with good hand punch. Easily adjusts to pick up stunts or twists, moves well on his feet and effective blocking in
motion.

Negative: Shows minimal power and must improve his overall body strength. Must develop more of a nasty streak in his blocking. He has been a bit inconsistent the past year.

Analysis: Since moving to offensive tackle, Capers has slowly developed into a legitimate prospect at the position. He offers a good degree of upside potential and can be used at multiple positions on the offense of line. Capers will improve once he experiences an NFL training program and may be a season or two away.

Kudos. Shame it came to the point of having to make trades but whatever, at least he's not sitting on his thumbs, he's actually doing something to improve. Make no mistake, these guys want to win more than anyone.

This trade also clears about $50k in salary this season.  Could that money be used for...Henoc??

If Muamba signs, expect Hurl to be traded too.
