First time in 29 years where the off season is a not a time to be bemoaning a missed Grey Cup- how sweet it is.

 

Figured we can park all Blue Bomber going ons for this off-season here in this thread.

 The times were much different back then with censorship being so strong on radio, tv & movies. Material by all comedians was tame by comparison to today. No surprise after what is allowed today that the themes back then would be looked upon as tame or boring. Some things about Wayne & Shuster are worth mentioning:

Performed in Britain for Allied Troops in WW2.

First comedians to ever perform on Canadian television.

Had their own show & comedy specials on CBC TV & radio. 

Had their own summer sitcom on CBS TV produced by Jack Benny in 1962.

Were voted the Most Popular Comedy Group in America in 1961 & 62. 

Appeared 67 times on the Ed Sullivan Show the most by any performers (at an unheard of $7,500 an appearance). Frank Shuster said that it was more like 58 times. 

Sullivan, famous for cutting acts out of the show or limiting performances to just a few minutes at the last minute was under contract to never do that to them. No other performers had that clause written into their contracts with Sullivan. One comedy skit in 1958 called Blood On My Toga was 12 minutes long which again was unheard of at the time.

Despite numerous offers from American television networks to develop a comedy series, W & S never left Canada preferring to center their work out of this country. How much bigger would they have been had they moved to the States?

Were very popular in Britain performing various times on television, comedy shows & clubs. (Probably from their time entertaining Allied troops in WW2). 

No question, W & S helped pave the road for other future Canadian comics to the US & internationally.

WINNIPEG, MB., May 28, 2020 – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has added American receiver Montay Crockett and American defensive back Doran Grant.

Crockett (5-11, 190, Georgia Southern, December 11, 1993 in Rock Hill, SC) played his collegiate football at Georgia Southern, appearing in 47 games with 18 starts. He tallied 32 receptions for 535 yards and three touchdowns. Crockett signed as an undrafted free agent with Green Bay in May of 2017, however was released following training camp. He has also spent time with Jacksonville, Houston, Arizona and Washington.

Grant (5-11, 200, Ohio State, November 30, 1992 in Akron, OH) most recently spent time with the DC Defenders of the XFL, after playing with Atlanta in the AAF in 2019. 👀 Sounds like the grim reaper of football leagues. Maybe, we should pass on him just for this season. 

We signed Crockett but no Tubbs?

If he makes the club, Davey would be a good handle.....Sounds like he could out run a bear....but I wonder how good he is at grinin' down bears....

It's not so much nostalgia as it is recognizing talent. Why can't we just give Canadians their due for hard work & sacrifice in any era? Why do Canadians bash other Canadians who do become successful? You can say what you want but in the 50's & 60's, they were a legit comedy team who could write their own ticket when it came to performances in the US & Britain. Like the contract they had with Ed Sullivan that no other performer had when performing on his show.

Had they went to the States, they'd have had their own television series & probably would have made movies. Is the comedy the same today as it was then? Of course not. Is some of the comedy popular in the 50's funny today? Of course not but they were funny for thee times they lived in.

Just appreciate the fact that these guys were Canadians & were all over tv here & in the US.  Also appreciate the fact that they didn't give up on their country, move to New York or LA & become Americans like so many of our performers have done. Once they leave most never come back. 

Bottom line for me is that if you don't like W & S it really doesn't matter.  I just wanted to add a few significant historical points, that's all. They were bigger & a  lot more famous than people today give them credit for. Guys like George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin  & The Smothers Brothers passed them by with younger audiences. Hard for older comics like them to adapt to changing times back in the late 60's. W & S were a slapstick & one liner comedy act that never swore or discussed taboo subjects. Pretty difficult going from a skit about baseball during the Roman Empire to criticizing Nixon & the Vietnam War thus alienating their older fanbase.

Up until the last 20 years or so, we didn't have the media infrastructure- like writers, directors, producers, and production staff and facilities to crank out the same level of professional productions. Now, we have Lionsgate Films and a lot of good people, but there are Canadians who get caught up in the idea that they have to compete in the US and leave to do that. The same applies to music performers.

I find it hard to understand a lot of Canadians. Like the ones that hate Trump, call him an asshat & constantly mock the guy.  They hate American foreign policy, resistance to climate change, militarism, gun laws, racism, etc. Yet some of these same Canadians are the first to say they want an NFL team in Toronto, the CFL sucks, it's bush league, want it to die , say they'll never watch 3 down football because it's a joke & the players are garbage. We all know people like that. Makes absolutely no sense to me. Something as distinctly Canadian as the CFL & they hate it.

What you might like, dislike or follow in your interest in sports  isn’t necessarily related to your political attitudes or how you feel about  another country .

Nah.....he wore a coon skin hat...killed himself a 'bar' when he was only three...king of the wild frontier guy.....Had a t.v. series back in the late 50's early sixties and sold a million hats and buckskin jackets.................................I'm too young to remember Kojack or Miami Vice.....lol
