Around the League - Regular Season Discussion (Redux)

Training camp is over .... adjustments have been made  and its time for the opening kickoff

Anybody change their minds on how preseason changed their expectations for this year .... Montreal thrashing Ottawa changed mine .... cutting Willy raise my hopes for the Argos .... Edmonton looks stronger than I first thought and Regina even worse

For the first time in years I am forecasting Winnipeg finishes first in the league  .. just an optimistic hunch .... I forecast these final standings:

Winnipeg

Calgary

Vancouver

Edmonton

Ottawa

Montreal

Toronto

Hamilton

Regina

And the ensuing outrage: http://3downnation.com/2017/08/28/cfl-community-reacts-outrage-ticats-hiring-art-briles/

Quote

The CFL community reacted angrily to news that former Baylor head coach Art Briles, who was fired over his handling of alleged sexual assaults at the school, has been hired as an assistant coach by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

A sampling:

If you knew and didn’t say anything then you are just as much part of rape as the people who committed rape. Shame on #CFL

— Theo Fleury (@TheoFleury14) August 28, 2017

I’m really hoping you guys let the women attending this clinic question Coach Briles about his history at Baylor. Not sure if y’all did. https://t.co/afIR4mDDb1

— Chantel Jennings (@ChantelJennings) August 28, 2017

This hire kind of undoes all the “Diversity is Strength” work the #CFL has been doing. Interesting view on women you’ve got there, @CFL https://t.co/C2v2phpVOV

— Laurie K (@mcsmartypants) August 28, 2017

A sad day for the Tiger-Cats and the #CFL to bring this human into the league. Indefensible and needless — https://t.co/zDd3rb9jMz

Win at all costs Ticats? Disgraceful…

— Thomas (@CottonStateTom) August 28, 2017

This is a disgrace for Hamilton, and for the CFL. https://t.co/aNEVfRXLZo

I won’t be going to ANY Ticat games until this piece of **** is fired. Take that to the bank, Bob Young.

I’ll honestly be surprised if Art Briles is on the staff come Labour Day. And I’m surprised @CaretakerBob signed off https://t.co/kFUBD1Huom

EE board governs a community-owned club. The spit storm that would happen here if Briles had been hired would be beyond belief.

@CaretakerBob @Ticats I am truly embarrassed to be a Ticat fan today.

Shame on the #ticats for hiring a man that covered up sexual assault in football. Players and fans deserve better.

The whitewashed clean PR release is laughable in context. You can’t google the guys name and not see he’s radioactive.

— Jon (@jonathanwhudson) August 28, 2017

On the heels of an INCREDIBLE #DiversityIsStrength campaign launch that couldn’t be more needed in the world, the #TiCats hire Art Briles.

— Luc Mullinder (@lucmull95) August 28, 2017

What an appalling hire @cfl. Your “Diversity is Strength” initiative demonstrated serious integrity – that you’ve now blown. No thanks https://t.co/jHfJzhOJfG

— Laurie K (@mcsmartypants) August 28, 2017

Do I bring my daughter to games and support the salary of this man?? Don’t think I can do that. #Ticats

That #TiCats vs #BCLions game is going to be a bit awkward on Sept 22nd, what with Lions support of “Dont Be A Bystander” program #CFL

— Spitzka (@Spitzka) August 28, 2017

.@Ticats Admittedly, not as catchy as “Diversity Is Strength,” but why don’t you guys wear these shirts for Art Briles’ first #CFL game? pic.twitter.com/aEjkw3CzN7

My heart goes out to the Hamilton Ti-Cats fans & players. I’ll leave the rest up to others to say – there’s too much! Feel sad #CFL #Ticats https://t.co/u0l9wP6vjg

#Ticats fans: FIRE AUSTIN! WE NEED A NEW COACH!
*team fires Austin & hires coaches*#Ticats fans: OMG NOT THAT COACH!!

— Chris Ive (@ChrisIve) August 28, 2017

I’m somewhat confident Ambrosie will do the right. He seems like the type who won’t tolerate what the #Ticats are doing #CFL

— Troy Gillard (@Troy_Gillard) August 28, 2017

This is a terrible decision by my hometown team. Bob Young MUST step in and tell his organization this hire must be undone. Immediately. https://t.co/k7fGsGftKr

— Damien Cox (@DamoSpin) August 28, 2017

If Bob Young won't reverse Briles hiring, new commish must step in. Or did he already approve this?

— Damien Cox (@DamoSpin) August 28, 2017

In 30+ years as a #TIcats fan I've seen some terrible seasons, but this is a new low. #HamOnt #ArtBriles

— Mike Pearson (@MikePearson8) August 28, 2017

What a horrible, tone deaf first hire for June Jones. If this guy's on staff, can't support this team. And I've been doing so for 46 years.

— Damien Cox (@DamoSpin) August 28, 2017

A complete embarrassment. Never would have expected that from @CaretakerBob #classlessmove @Ticats @ticatmitchell

Ooooh, boy...

Wonder if this is a shady attempt to get RGIII to hamilton.

Someone asked him on Twitter what his thoughts were and that was his response. No idea why that was included in the 3DN article, though.

This is exactly what I am wondering... Bob Young is a class act and I would be shocked to hear he signed off on this signing...

Thanks BnG for the summary- a lot of work. What on Earth were Austin and Tillman smoking when they came up with this?

Rod Pedersen is a spineless piece of garbage and I hope his tweet is not overlooked in the outrage over all of this.

Agreed. Chickenshit response.

EDIT: AND WOW! Follow the thread. He keeps on going...

If this wasn't so sad you'd think it was a joke. So, the CFL is okay with rape & sexual assault. Burn those  DIS T Shirts as they don't practice what they preach. Glad I didn't buy one.

Someone needs to tell Mitchell to lay off the glue. Pretty sickening to see him defend this decision so easily.

This is exactly what you would expect to hear if you were to expect hearing anything in response. The Ticats are taking a chance on hiring this guy and putting forth their good reputation on the integrity of a man who doesn't seem to possess any.

Having just recaptured the fan base in Hamilton, this losing season already grates on the nerves of many. Now, there will be many more..

I'm all for second chances but going all in before testing the mood seems kinda backward.

Week 16... if this hunk of crap is still floating, week 16 would be a good time for "free D cell battery giveaway day"

To brush it off as "Art Briles a is a good man that was caught in a very bad situation. " is pretty disgusting... I can't really think of a better word for... I'm not typically one to get outraged over things, and I wouldn't say I'm particularly "outraged" about this signing... but I would be embarrassed and disgusted if the Bombers hired a guy like this...

What needs to happen, is corporate sponsors need to make a statement. Both the TiCats own sponsors, and maybe more worthwhile, league sponsors like Nissan, etc...

So... He knew about stuff but didnt report it? Or he participated in it? Cuz if its the first one... Thats a tough situation... Im sure we have all seen illegal things and never reported them...  Thats a tough one. If he participated in it... **** off and die.

I dunno tho. Not sure he should be allowed here either way. But to anyone saying there's no difference between not reporting it and doing it himself... Umm yeah there is.

Rock and a hard place at times... Perhaps this was one of those times.

Yeah, I get that, but saying "none of my business" is super weak, especially given the collective response of his peers in the media.

You need to read up on what actually happened. This isn't like  noticing someone swipe an Eat More from a Husky station. He was alleged to be complicit in a cover up of what was a pretty serious sexual assault problem among the athletes that he was responsible for.

Some quick notes from this story:
1. #CFL knew about this hiring ahead of time.
2. So did Bob Young.
3. #Ticats aren't reversing course.

Nothing like compounding original idiocy.....
