First post 'expectations in '17'

Well i'm a new member!

Just signed up after the season. Ya its late but want to find a forum to discuss blue bomber football. i have been a reader for quite some time.  It was an exciting time for the Blue Bombers this season after a rough start we became a contender.

My thoughts moving forward on/off the field include

- we need a new DC - richie hall just isn't what we need right now.

- LaPolice might leave for a HC but if he returns that will be big. He really did change for the better since his last stint.

- Stadium atmosphere aside from 2 games was terrible. Poor attendance. Whats the deal with this? maybe its time to lower prices. That stadium should be full more times than not including home opener and like at least 3 other games, and labour day rematch.

-  CFL TV #'s were impressive.

- I want the CFL to maintain its stars. Jonathon Jennings is a stud. No doubt. And the CFL needs to do a better job getting these stars noticed around town. The lions are popular in vancouver. yet they lack the starpower say sedins. i would say the lions head coach is more known that the canucks head coach. CFL needs to do a better job overall. we have been saying this for 20 yrs. lol.-

- TV deal is not big enough. TSN is underpaying. period. Higher salary cap = better salaries for coachs/players and most of them will stay in the league. Business side of the league needs to improve.

- Blue Bombers have finally come around listening to fans with jersey brand. I see heritage jets logo everywhere in the city and the blue bombers royal blue colors can be seen around town. Its great Winnipeg is getting back to its roots. And now we fans need to get these teams over this hurdle they face.

All in all. Its been a fun season. Yes. It sucks off-season football is here. Its never fun as the wait is way too long. good thing we have the NHL Jets to keep up busy until spring. well lets hope late spring early summer.

  • It's just as easy to say it from Winnipeg.  A lot of people didn't like the old location either, you're never going to please everyone

  • How can that not be debated? We used to park at Wolseley Plumbing, which is only a little closer than where we park now. We would have to wait in the parking lot to get out, then wait in bumper to bum

The stadium is where it is because it killed two birds with one stone, not because it was the best location. Saying otherwise is ignorance at best. Willful ignorance in some cases...

1st stone: Bombers need a new stadiu\m

2nd stone: they need it in the middle of no where?

And yet Winnipeggers keep proving my attitudes correct. Wahhhh I like the old location better, bet the old arena location was better too, I remember the stink about daring to put the arena down town. Winnipeg will complain about absolutely everything.

It's a valid point though,   as I said before my dad is near 70.  He doesn't want to spend anywhere from 90 - 120 minutes in cramped school bus just because they put the stadium in a terrible place.

It was just an illogical place with limited entrances/exits.

The MTS Centre and the Goldeyes ball park both have dozens of exits and ways to spread apart to each area of the town.

IMO it would of made more sense to have had the football stadium at the Forks or St Boniface or somewhere that has many routes to get in and out.

These driving times are not that different. Also not in the middle of nowhere, there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area. Middle of nowhere would be on the ex grounds.

Is one of the big factors that there is more free parking at Polo Park?

As it's been mentioned, Winnipegers don't like change and year 1 @ IGF was a horrible first impression.

Stadiums and arenas need big footprints that the cost to put them in central locations balloons the price.

MTS centre lucked out because the land donation bought Thompson into True North.

The land sale of the old location was part of the funding of the stadium that wouldn't have been there had they built at that location

I have no idea the answer to this question but what was around the polo park area when the old stadium and arena were built?

Those times are pretty much meaningless for events.  Polo Park is basically at the centre of the city's transportation network or at the very least on the edge of it.  Many major routes available in all directions.  The U of M campus is extremely isolated.  There are 3 roads in and out, and only 2 are accessible for events.  Everyone entering and exiting the campus has to go through Pembina Highway, be it in their own car or on a bus.  It's a ridiculous traffic jam.  You're only going to deal with it if you really want to attend a game and you can't really get that last minute day of game walk up because it takes significant planning to get to a game.  It's a barrier, whether people want to label it whining or not the resulting empty seats speak for themselves.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Lawless reports that the Bombers and Nichols are far apart in negotiations. Apparently, Nichols is asking in the 400k range and if Durant is still available when it gets down to the short strokes, Nichols may have priced himself out of Blue and Gold.

$400,000.00 .... seems like a lot. Too much I think.

If this is accurate I'm surprised.

Guess we'll see.

A 400k max including performance bonuses is fair. If he hits a bunch of goals, he'll be worth 400k. 250k base with bonuses totalling 150k...I'm good with that.

I don't know what's worse, Nichols wanting 400,000 or the rumour about us trading picks for Franklin.

Looks like it could be worse than that:

So when attendance was terrible at the old stadium, what was the excuse then?

If you look at the numbers from the late 90's, the attendance sucked worse than they do now and they didn't have to compete with the NHL either.

Just say no to Durant.

Man I wish we had played some of our other QBs when we had the chance.

We may have our lacy underthings all bunched up for no reason. Nichols may be asking for the moon but reality may intrude as it often does.

Who pays him that much? Can't see it.

That has to be a joke with him wanting $450000.

No one is going to pay him that much. Way far off on what he should get.

His only option is Toronto and Montreal and i doubt either are interested.

Yeah those 4 minutes really all the difference for me lol. After that first year IGF has been a breeze for parking and coming/going. Any of you Winnipeggers need some tips this out of towner (and his retired father) would be happy to offer advice ?.  We got a damn fine stadium. The location is fine (good for the U of M Bison too). This complaining has been going on for over 3 years. Please stop.

better location

Last time I lived in Winnipeg I had season tickets at the Polo Park location. Something around $100, sitting in the end zone, but it was excellent value. Really enjoyed it. It was during swaggerville and pretty much every game was worth going to. Lived in the north end at the time and biked to just about every game. You wouldn't believe how quick you could get into and out of games on a bike. If I had been driving to the games, my commute would have likely been twice as long.

I know many fans wouldn't consider it, but I would expect biking in and out of the new location would be even better. I used to bike there from Osborne village daily when I was a student. Tons of bike infrastructure for getting into and out of the area. Again, many wouldn't consider it, but that is what I would look at if I moved back to town.

Always wanted to combine driving and biking. Park a bit out of the way, but be able to get there quick on a bike. Gotta have a truck or decent sized vehicle to take the bike I guess....

RE: 2017.  The Bombers had a lot of good fortune in that mid-season win streak which deserted them at the end  ,but I do not how much we can count on a similar aligning of planets next year.

With all the stadium talk here, I'm still bitter about how stupid the Bombers looked at the start of the 2012 season when we pleaded with the CFL to schedule 4 road games at the start of the year to "give us more time to build our stadium"... only to have to concede and eventually use Canad Inns for the rest of the season.

Then in 2013, we looked even stupider with the parking fiasco, I remember the first home game, the stadium was sold out and only about half the people made it to opening kickoff because of traffic... On top of that, they encouraged fans to bike to the stadium, and within the first few weeks of the season, a Bomber fan cycling to the game had already been killed.

It looks like they've managed to get things under control now, to an extent, they've been more organized as a whole, and they've used things like the after-game DJ parties and before-game tailgate parties to help reduce traffic congestion around kickoff. I think the fans will return once the Bombers have a few good seasons, people have to remember that before the 2016 season, the Bombers went 3-15, 7-11 and 5-13.
