So far there is only some evidence that willy is better then any QB we've had here since 2008. We haven't won more then 7 games since 2008(I think). Soooo. I dunno. Over paying for an average Qb so that we don't possibly lose him but might have to cut if his salary is too high if he is only and average qb ( which is still better then we've had).
Give him boost in base pay and then back fill with incentives. If meeting completion %, TDs,int, yard, wins, goals he gets a bonus and maxes out at 400-500k great. Little risk and great rewards. Less reward for willy, but if he believes he is an elite qb and will have a great couple of years then it's a win for him.
You don't pay 120k for a crown Victoria hoping or believing it's going to transform into a jaguar becuase u upgrade the rims, tires and intake (ol, receivers, coaching)

I don't agree with paying willy 4-500K and cutting him if he doesn't play like an elite QB.   It either is he plays at an elite level and we are happy or he doesn't play at an elite level and we are force to cut him/renegotiate.

What if he plays like a Danny Mac, or Kevin Glenn level for us?  Better then all the QBs we've had since Glenn but not in the top 4 for QBs in the league?  do we cut him because we are overpaying him?  Do we try and Renegotiate his contract to pay him less and he walks like Lefors did?

I'm all for paying him a mid-tier base QB contract (250-350k) that makes sense if he is above servicable like Glenn etc, but will incentives that lets him get paid 400-500k like a top tier QB is he plays lights out?

I think by paying him elite qb level money might force our hand to cut him if he turns out to be better then all the rest we've fielded in the past but isn't playing like burris, tate, ray, lulay?

There is nothing saying we can't succeed with a Kevin glenn type QB that contributes enough to help the team win without having to carry the team on his own..

We don't know the cap situation. Look at how free agency went... They spent a lot. Every big spend requires the money to come from somewhere.

You have to replace that player. If league minimum is 55k and you need 100k, you have to cut a player making 155k and replace him with a 55k player to get that. Or two players making 105k and replace them both with players making 55k.
    So yeah, you do.

Your argument would be valid if it was a binary situation.  Either great or bust.  The reality is that there's lots of shades of grey in between.

We may still want to keep Willy if he's progressing even if he's not great this year.  That becomes harder to do the more you pay him.  It also forces us to start Willy otherwise it looks like Management doesn't know what they are doing by paying him as the franchise QB

It's a huge gamble either way.  Put all our eggs in the Willy basket in the hope that he's the QB we've been looking for forever.   If it turns out he is, then great, we made the right move.  If it turns out he's not, then we've lost time, money and spent our SMS poorly which we could have used to upgrade the team elsewhere.  We take on all the risk of any injuries that Willy may have and the risk that he's not the QB we've been looking for.  OTOH, if we wait to see if Willy's the guy we run the risk of having to pay him more next year.  He takes on the injury risk and the risk of not being the QB we're hoping he is.

I'm still firmly in the 'Let Willy Prove Himself Worthy' camp.  I don't believe in paying big bucks for potential.  I don't believe in paying a guy like a top QB until he becomes a top QB.  Willy's a mid-level QB right now.  In fact not many outside of Winnipeg would pick him as their starter over their current starting QB.

I'm all for working out an extension that pays Willy for what he's accomplished to keep our starting QB in the fold.  Playing out his contract has both advantages and disadvantages for Willy.  Get injured or have another year like last year and he won't get the big raise he wants.  Play light out and he'll cost even more than he's currently asking.  $150K raise?  $100K signing bonus?  In your second year?  Based on last years play?  Doesn't add up for me.

I have nothing but respect for those who stick their neck out and make a mock draft.  It is so much easier to stand on the sidelines and take pot shots at someone's work than it is to put yourself out there.

That said, I cannot see Calgary taking a linebacker in the first round.  Linebacker is in no way a need for the Stampeders.  They play three imports at linebacker and have two imports who will be fighting for a designated import position behind them.  They have a very quality Canadian in McCartney who can play defense.  Shomari Williams is mostly an excellent special teams player, but also a guy you could plug into the defense to get through a game if you had three injuries to your linebackers.  They have Yannick Carter - another excellent special teamer.  Last year they drafted Caron who looked great in training camp but then was injured for the season.  I cannot see them taking a linebacker early in the draft.  It isn't a need.

I could see them taking a receiver, if Durant or Demski were still on the board, as they lost Sinopoli to Ottawa and only have three Canadian receivers.  They also need to replace the loss of Jones on the OL and in your draft scenario with the remaining OL that are available, I'd see them taking Ruby with their first pick.

I do like the third round pick of the Stamps taking Varga.  Most mock drafts are calling that.  He likely won't ever play in the CFL which will scare away most teams.  The Stampeders with three third round picks, could afford to spend one on Varga.

Credit where credit is due is not the same as seeking approval. If he was posting solely for stature or perceived stature amongst over posters or to be accepted as part of a group then perhaps you could say he was seeking approval.
But giving credit is different. Giving him credit for his had work writing and posting his reports of tc etc is different. He puts in a lot of effort to share with other people and does it for the community and not for himself.
I for one would be sad to lose out on these reports because all chest pumping that goes on here a lot of the time.
Appreciate the fact that gbill, mike and other contribute to this group in ways that other members like myself can't and let it go.

Sorry...old habits are hard to break.  In banking "M" stands for three zeros.  So $400M is $400,000 and $4MM would be $4,000,000.

    Let's not go there.
And by that I mean, no CFL in Toronto.

Can we agree that the Argos have to get out of Rogers Centre, and rid themselves of Braley?
    I think so.
Braley gets 2 Grey Cups now…that's gotta end.

Is this a way do do both?
    It's a start.

    Same with the negotiations.
    It's a start.

They don't have to get everything they're asking for..but the league has to get out of the sheer lunacy that is playing out of Rogers Centre and  the restrictions that accompany it.
This is a way to do that, and I believe it will benefit the entire league in the long run.

Screw Toronto? Yeah, but let's not screw the whole league to do it.

I think LAPO was a good coach with a horrible cast of players to play with.. Even with that, he managed to take the team to the greycup with a broken down Qb, a weak oline, and a good defence.

The team cratered after lapo was removed, and Burke didn't do anything with the same cast of players...    We finally looked like perhaps we are on an uptrend, AFTER changing the GM, The whole Coaching staff and a bunch of players including the QB.

So.. I think Lapo is a good Coach and did well considering what and who he had to work with.

Glenn's one of the best backup QB's in the league.  He kept BC and Calgary in the playoffs when their #1 QB's got hurt.  For the right price, he'd be a good pick up.  If I were him, though, I'd wait until the first starting QB went down to get the biggest payday.

How's about this, maybe the "report" (rumour) that he wanted to be out to be closer to home just means he wants to be closer to home?  Probably for a personal reason.

Rather than creating your long list of his hypothetical personal failings.

I know, it's a long standing tradition to denigrate players who are no longer here unless they leave under a very specific set of "acceptable" circumstances.  Very well, have at 'er.  I won't stand in your way any longer.

Why do we need to unload salary in order to put out large offers to FA??

The cap doesn't come into play in the offseason?   I guess you don't want to cut someone for nothing if the salary cap becomes and issue.. but...

    This thread is just Crazy.

Willy is our Number 1 QB  in his FIRST year as a starting Qb.. He needs experience to continue to grow.. we need to play him as he will be the starter next year.  Marve showed that he had alot of mobility and drive to extend plays! That is awesome, but so far that's all he has shown.

We finally have a QB that that we can Build around (Willy) and we got to keep going with that until Marve outplays him in practise, and in games.  When and if Willy Gets hurt, Marve will have another Chance.
