I think 300k is going rate for a possible 1 who has looked as good as dru has now a days. It’s not Zack money. It’s 2nd contract after showing serious potential elsewhere QB going rate. Fair deal.
It's more than Adams is getting. You know Adams, been in the league since 2016, thrown for more than 13,000 yards, ran for 1400, the third best QB in the league last year, took his team to the Western Final, that Vernon Adams.

Strev > Brown
So you're saying the Strev is worth more than Brown? I can't see us dropping $290K+ hard money on Strev.
-
@Brandon It's absolutely a gamble, but is it a good or a bad gamble? Is it a gamble that they had to take? (IE: Were their other bidders who pushed the price up?)

He’s going to be a starter so you have to pay him as a starter.
He will not be among the highest paid, I’m not sure you have a guy who’s going to get 340 in the same list as Zach and Kelly (you actually forgot Kelly) who are making 600k.
He’s pretty much making the bare minimum amount.
I stand corrected: Collaros, Kelly, Harris, Fajardo, MBT, Maier, Brown, Adams. (One of these QB's is still not like the others)
I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that Brown will be the starter. Crumb has way more experience in the same system.

Dru Brown - first 3 seasons with Winnipeg: 102 passing attempts - only started 3 games.
Trevor Harris prior to going to Ottawa to back up Burris: 6 Years of pro experience. (2010 Jacksonville Jaguars*, 2011 Arizona Rattlers, 2011 Hartford Colonials*, 2011 Buffalo Bills*, 2011 Sacramento Mountain Lions, 2012 Orlando Predators, 2012–2015 Toronto Argonauts)
Dru Brown prior to going to Ottawa: 3 years pro experience. (Bombers)
I don't remember Harris being paid as a starter when he went to Ottawa, they already had Burris' big salary on the books, so I doubt they paid two QB's as starters.
Harris is a competent QB, but is he an example of paying big for hoped for performance that worked out?
-
When does paying for anticipated future performance work out for young QB's with very few reps? Mike Reilly in 2013 is the only one I can remember. Before that??? Brown is more likely to Arbuckle than Reilly.

340k and 400k. Those are the numbers. Every QB has playtime bonuses built into their contract and no one subtracts those when we talk about how much the contract is. No different for Dru. He negotiated a 300k+ contract.
$290K is the hard money. $340K is what he could earn if he starts all the games and hits all the bonuses. Big overpay IMO.
They are paying a starters salary to a guy who has yet to become a starter. At $290K he's making more than Adams, the third best QB in the league last year & BLM ($225K hard money) & Masoli ($133K Hard Money) all vets with tons of experience, although BLM and Masoli also have huge injury issues & should have retired IMO.
My guess on top QB contracts:
Collaros, Harris, Fajardo, MBT, Maier, Brown. (One of these QB's is not like the others)

Spot on, as usual.
Way more money than I was expecting. Good for Dru. Then again... "Brown will earn $290,000 in hard money in 2024" isn't $300K+

We could have upped Schoen's salary last year to get extra year(s) on the contract and didn't so IMO he goes to the highest bidder & I don't think that's going to be us.

I'm really interested to see how much Brown gets with the redblacks.

BOO to Lions?

Other qbs have done it. Jake Maier & Trevor Harris. Maier especially is tenuos. If Calgary can find someone better then he'll be gone. Maier is 6 feet & 227 lbs. He can't even bother to play in shape which is half his problem. The guy is a pylon in the pocket. Maier should be 20 lbs lighter.
You're comparing Collaros to Maier and Harris? That's this kind of insight I expect from you.

To everyone who thinks that Collaros should take a pay cut...
How would you react if your boss came to you and said "How 'bout taking a $100K pay cut so we can keep the guy who wants to take your job around?". I don't think it would go well.

I agree with all of this, but I think Brady's highest bidder will be the Bombers.
We have good Cdn talent. Other teams don't. Brady solves two problems. First he upgrades the Cdn talent. Second he's the best RB in the league. The Riders for example could overpay him and use the free'd up import spot to help fix their O line with a cheap import.
-
I think we lose:
- Brown to a team that can give him a chance at being a starter, likely Ottawa or Hamilton.
- Brady O to the highest bidder, not the NFL.
- BOO to a team that can give him more playing time.
- Gray to a team who over pays him.
- Schoen to a team who overpays him. I'm hoping we can find the money to keep him and Lawler, but $500K on two receivers seems like a lot to me.

Good moves IMO. Not sure how Hall fits in or how much of a salary drop he took.
-
Tre Ford isn't just a running QB. He had a 102 season efficiency rating. Threw twice as many TD's as Picks. He threw for 2069 yards in 10 games which would be close to 4K for a whole season. He did all this on a piss poor team.

If you were Dru brown, would you sign with Ottawa knowing the history of that team as well as bad management & coaching? If I was Brown, I'd be hesitant if they offered me the most money to play for a tire fire of an organization like that. I truly hope he uses common sense to know that money might buy him more problems than he really needs. Brown reminds me of Nick Arbuckle. Small body of work. Thought he should be a starter. Has been bouncing around since. He'll probably bounce his way out of the CFL now the way he's played.
If I'm Dru I absolutely want to sign with Ottawa. It gives him the best chance at being the starter which is what he needs to get better.

Folks are doing mental gymnastics to say that Dru Brown should stay with the Bombers.
The reality is that he needs starts to get better & he needs a chance to be the number 1 QB. We can't give him either. Even if the contract was the same amount, and quite frankly we can't afford to pay our backup as much as other teams can because of Collaros' salary, he'd be better off taking a job with a team that gives more chance at playing time.

Why would he regret saying it? It's the truth. Every football player wants to play in the NFL, earn the big bucks while playing against the best competition in the world while being treated like gods.
Rourke was the best QB to come to the CFL in decades. He lit up the league in his 2nd year. He deserved the accolades.

It's his first year. That's not lingering or clinging to a dream. Those things apply to Strev.
Rourke is getting the best coaching in the world to improve his skills & he's getting games towards his NFL pension.
This is Rourke's one and only chance. I expect he'll keep chasing the NFL dream for a year or two more.
