Solidifying the OL is the biggest need, imo. Does that mean letting Gray grow into the role? Going 3 imp? Hoping for Drew? I don’t know. But it’s the single biggest issue.

Related is our run game. I don’t think we’ve done the best job scheming, blocking, or running, so it’s difficult to pinpoint how to improve the run game as a whole. Losing Demski is a huge hit because I think the simplest cure was to get him more involved in more ways and that’s been taken from us.

Pass rush is next need, for sure. But yeah, not much to do about that. Can’t see us adding anyone impactful. Just need the Jeff’s to bring it.

I vote for punt and kick return. The last time we had a good returner was … 19-something?

  2. Agree with the opinion that Augustine and Oliveira should basically split reps, and go with whoever is rolling. Totally supported not paying a 35 year old Harris big $, but full respect - you can really see the difference. He is a hall of famer, our current RB's likely won't be. But we need at least 75% of the total production Harris gave us from our two RB's, and for defenses to at least respect our run game a bit.

yeah....we can easily replace the rushing totals...Harris got us 623 yards....Oliveira totalled 429...and that wasnt all in starts....JA got 285 yards...in only 1 true start....thats 714 yards....now give them both a full season lugging the rock...we will be top 2 in team rushing...again

I also trust the Buck's play calling. Using two young RB's, keeping them fresh, some screens, play actions ... Harris was a player that other D's had to key on, which opened some other things up, so we will miss that. But overall we'll be fine.

Wilder Jr really thinks highly of himself doesn't he.

And Chris Jones thinks really highly of himself if he honestly believes he can just plop players in different positions in pro football. Yes, it kind of worked with Duron Carter, but not really. Disrespectful. And yeah, Simoni Lawrence, Bighill, Moncrief would love to have a word about that.

Not much has been said about Kongbo. yes, he has bolted for the Excited States for yet another possible audition in the NFL, but if he couldn't make the grade previously, what makes him think he can do it this time? I expect him to be back, but on the other hand, he was not a dominant player when here- Jake Thomas was much more valuable.

Probably his last real chance in the NFL this time. He has had some injuries in NFL camps before unfortunately, but NFL interest dries up at some point. I hope for his sake he makes it. If not, I  hope for our sake he comes back and becomes a long term CFL impact player for the Bombers.

  6. Interesting to get some context on the negotiations from the Friesen article. But, at the end of the day in pro football (NFL and CFL), old RB's are not considered a good investment in a salary cap world. In the NFL prime RB's (like Dalvin Cook) aren't even valued as highly as other position groups. It's the age where teams want to find cheaper options at RB, because there's always a supply of talent available. That's what Walters did. Augustine and Oliviera are cheaper, younger options. I love Harris, but support this decision 100%.

I am curious to know what they consider full value for 300k.

Their OC is not a push the ball down the field guy. They have underwhelming QBs. Stats are likely not going to be there.

I can't see this ending any other way than him re-negotiating/getting cut next year.

He also apparently got no signing bonus so he has no real security.

Seems like a very non Chris Jones move - overpaying for a player not in the most critical positional value. He always struck me as a guy who finds and develops new talent. As has been said, love Lawler, would not pay $300K for him.

Don't like losing Darby or Jones, but if there's one place this regime has proven they can find guys at it's defensive back so I won't worry there yet. Mcguire could wind up being the biggest loss of them all if they don't pull a rabbit out of their hat there... Maybe they're putting a bunch of money aside for Streveler? I dunno.

Agree that Streveler might be the long game. I think losing McGuire good be a gain rather than a loss. Don't think he had it as a legit CFL QB, even back up. I think there's better options.

  9. Bottom line is Kyle Walters is a smart GM. He's playing chess, while most are playing checkers. If Mourtada turns it around, great. But, he's not sitting on his hands doing nothing while he waits for that slim possibility. I guarantee there are plans afoot (get it?) for another kicker or two to come to Winnipeg if Mourtada continues to struggle. Kyle and Wade are not going to flush an almost certain Grey Cup victory this season because of bad kicking. O'Shea is doing O'Shea - publicly loyal to players. That's his thing. But Kyle makes personnel decisions. Remember Drew Willy?

I think its much more mechanical. Its like a pitchers delivery and release. Except you need basically flawless mechanics every time.

Mental issues can ruin any player in any sport. And staying consistent through long droughts of not kicking, even with in a game is tough. But that is never an issue with QBs who come in off the bench or who go a long stretch with out a possession/many passes.

Ive played with kicking, but I wasnt a real kick at any level. Ive done muay thai and kicking arts extensively and I can tell you ive seen peoples kicking mechanics fall apart over minor tightness and all kinds of minor technique issues.

Watching soo many of Mourtadas clips, he practices trying to make field goals while kicking off. The tee, the holder, his approach, empty fields, and always from right down the middle. Its like a kick off. Which is why he excels at kicking off soo much. In a kick off you have no timer, you can take as comfortable a stride as you like. Kicking a field goal, you have to cover a very precise distance, with an exact number of steps, in a small time window. All of that is stuff he didnt seem to practice.

His approach looks uncomfortable to me. And he looks un sure of every kick he launches. But never surprised when he misses. I really dont think he knows mechanically how to reliably kick and adjust to different spots on the field. He only seems comfortable with the xpt, which is right down the middle.

It isnt really a surprise, he's only kicked a little bit in the IFL as a pro, didnt have a full college career, and what he had ended a very long time ago. He's old, lacks experience, and has tremendous leg strength. Weaker leg guys arent trying to hit 60 yard fgs every day, they are trying to figure out how to hit from every angle, and mastering their mechanics.

Right. Which is a long way of saying, he's not a CFL caliber kicker. Pro kicking is pretty black and white - can you hit 75 - 80% of field goals in actual games? If not, time to find someone else. Bad kicking will cost us a game. Hopefully not the Western final.

  11. Dan Bailey, Kai Forbath ... - worth Kyle Walters asking about them. They've made their NFL money. Maybe they'd come up for less than half a CFL season and a Grey Cup ring? Or after we beat Edmonton this week, make a deal to save Sean Whyte from the Elks implosion. I'm going to be freaking out if we go into the Western Final with Mourtada or Leggio as our kicker.
