How Long Before The Club Makes A Big Move

If you want to panic you could think of it this way.  We were the worst team in the league last year and none of our presumptive starters got beat out in training camp.  That includes rotation or backup guys who inherited their jobs from better players who left.  I guess you could say Hefney but let's be honest about what else is going on there.

And the strength of this regime is supposed to be finding import talent.  Did even one import rookie stand out in TC or the exhibition games this year?  I mean some guys did ok (Markett) but there were no "this guy is obviously going to play a long time in this league" finds this year.

Wirte off last night if you want.  I certainly undertsand the context of that score.  But remember this, those guys were the best Joe Mack could do to try improve this team.

Caveat to the above: I realize finally cuts haven't happened.  Maybe Jovon gets axed for Markett or something like that.

While I don't disagree that our record proved us to be the worst team in the league last season  .. I will offer one caveat .. we were decimated by injuries coming out of the gate and that played a large part in why our record was as bad as it was early last year.  That said, I do agree that on the surface it doesn't seem that we've found people to really push the imports we have on our roster .. if nothing else, the young guys who showed promise last year (Washington for example) will have another year of experience and SHOULD be more sound.

While I am disappointed by the loss last night .. I try to keep things in perspective .. it *IS* just a preseason game .. and by and large, completely meaningless .. though it would have been nice to see the team learning to win together before June 27.

I think of it this way, need to have 15 of those guys play on the 42, 5 are the QB and specialist. You have another five that are back ups from last year, Volny, Jade, Labbe, West and Thomas. So really five guys last on the roster next week. I think there are some gems in there like Freddy Harris, Marrket, Wild Pierce and Kennedy.

Agree regarding last night.  As a stand alone it was meaningless.  If guys want to take my legitimate concerns and dismiss them because "I'm just some negatron overeacting to a a pre-season game" that's cool but the real games are about to start and if you feel optimistic about this year's team then God love ya.

I think one thing we can say definitively is that we just didn't have the same level of new talent in camp this year.  Where's the guys like Matthews, Simpson and Alex Hall?  Can't point to a single guy who was brought in who looks to have the potential to be an impact player.

There are a few, particularly at DL and DB.  Harris and Anderson look like they can play.  Marshall and Markett.  The two returners are duds IMO.  Jake Thomas looks ready to take the next step and go from a 1/3 of the snaps type guy to a 2/3 of the snaps type DT.

Hope you're right!  Definitely agree on Thomas.  I was excited about Marshall when we signed him but hadn't heard a thing about him until last night when he seemed to perform pretty well.

Its going to come down to Lucas and Thomas. Lucas came into camp in amazing shape and it showed in the first game.

I think a lot of that is because most of the offensive guys are already in place so you weren't going to see any receivers or rbs pop off the page... I mean Doug Pierce seemed to do quite well last night... but he was here last year so he's not a new face... there were no new rbs... Some of the d-linemen seem to be able to play, and for what it's worth I don't think Hall really jumped off the page last year either, it took a couple games for him to really settle in and show what he could do.

I think there is just way, way too much over reacting to TCF and rookies and backups getting beat in preseason. Really need to remember that. Hell even in the first game the first teamers hardly got any time either.

I was actually encouraged by the play of goltz, but maybe that's because I don't freak out over a couple interceptions when we have no idea how or why they happened. Pierce and Etienne and Carter seemed to make some good catches so that's a plus. They were able to sack Burris a few times, that's a plus, overall the defense wasn't that bad considering Hamilton was using a lot of starters so that's a plus. It was really only the turnovers last night that sank them and if you want to get so worked up over turnovers from people who are not likely to see much of the field then have at it, but I'm not going to give myself a heart attack over that.

The concern is that the starters will be some kind of rusty to start the season having barely seen the field in preseason so we'll have to see how that goes, but to try and use preseason to judge how good the team is when you haven't seen the starters.... yikes that is just looking for reasons to be negative and that **** pisses me off.

Oh I'm not freaking out by any means.  I understand that the team last night has very little bearing on what the actual team will look like.  Just feels like the new talent wasn't as impressive this year.

You could probably say the same thing about last season to, and the season before that.  The fact is the guys you are talking about, Matthews, Simpson, and Hall specifically, are guys that we had the same impression of as we do this year of guys like Markett, Anderson and Kennedy, amongst a few others.

Wow, there must be like 5000 people there!

was over 50k along the route and at City Hall for the presentation. big success. (have to say though that likely half of them were downtown worker types who just took their elevator down for their smoke-break... but nonetheless, it was great to see and it got lots of coverage on anything not owned by Rogers)
