Alex Hall Traded

Don't mind this trade at all.

Am I disappointed that our most dynamic player on defense has been traded?  Yes.  Am I glad that we managed to get something for a guy who was clearly on his way out of Bomberland?  Absolutely.   We acquired a non-import offensive lineman .. who is under contract for the next couple of years.  As people like to point out, the draft is a crap shoot and we've essentially eliminated some of the guess work in getting a player with a decent body of work at the next level.  He's not a rookie.  He's not making the jump to the pros.  We're not developing a project.  We're getting a young player who is only going to get stronger (over the off season and as he puts more distance between himself and his injury).   We did all that for a second round draft pick and a free agent import with NFL aspirations.   Oh .. we also nabbed a 4th rounder in a subsequent year ..

Not a bad day at the office.

I wonder who gets named our most ''outstanding'' player now that Hall gets traded?

I can't even think of a worthy option.

Henoc gets MOP, MODP, MOC, hell let's let him play one game on the o-line and call him the most outstanding o-lineman too

He'll be next...

Hall had very little to no value to us at this point in time. Really, would you rather have a 2nd round pick or Neufeld is the question and probably decides which side of the fence your on for this trade.

I don't mind getting the proven Canadian commodity, seeing as our first round pick last year may never come here and our 2nd round pick looks like a career special teamer if he even recovers from his injury. The draft is a crap shoot, we just took out the guess work and got a Canadian O-linemen which we desperately need.

no that is a terrible attitude to have just to try and justify it. To teams looking to add the missing pieces for a championship run Hall did have value. Walters should have been in the drivers seat but instead of getting straight across value for one of the best if not THE best at his position for that team looking to put themselves over the hump in the playoffs he had to pay a pretty significant price to get something of questionable value (he is a backup still don't forget, maybe he starts here maybe he doesn't but he is not a sure thing) One for one this trade is easily understandable, adding in the draft picks it's a really slick trade by Taman.

Apparently I'm in the minority but I think Walters did pretty darn good for this one.  Hall was a goner - and the rest of the league knew it.  Giving up the second rounder sucks, but they clearly think this linemen is at least decent.

Walters got value (Neufeld) for very little (essentially a second round pick).

I agree totally. As well there is no reason we can't resign Hall next year if he does not catch on in the NFL.Well done Walters.

I'm sure if Walters could make a better deal he would have. His choice was make this deal or lose hall for nothing. Good trade.

I doubt that was his only option, other teams were also interested in Hall. Whether this trade is good for us or not comes down to how good Neufeld is versus what we would have chosen for our pick, which was 10th overall. We seem to have a lot of NI Olineman that are not of, or barely of starting caliber. Neufeld may be an upgrade, but will we really be able to challenge teams like Saskatchewan when we seek to acquire their 6th or 7th Olineman as our starters? The draft is a crapshoot, but your odds of winning go up the more picks you have, especially in the first 2 rounds. I think a strategy of hanging on to our picks, even though it will make us worse in the short term, is the only way we eventually join the stronger franchises like Calgary and BC. A 10th pick overall could yield nothing, or it could yield a starting NI lineman that plays at a higher level than Neufeld. You need to find some of the latter is you ever want to develop a premier O-line, and the draft is the most likely place to find them.

if you actually believe there is a chance Hall re-signs here you're insane. Why come back to this place after he gets a taste of a winning team?  No as soon as you trade him you ain't getting him back.

I agree with you. Especially since based on what we have now, 2 imports on the o-line looks like the ideal set up. With January and Jones it appears we might have something servicable at tackle position and I don't see how this guy helps the interior in a way that it's worth giving up a high 2nd round pick in addition to the top rental player on the market. The whole idea behind rentals is trading something you were going to lose for something maybe useful. trading that plus something maybe useful for something else maybe useful is just bad asset management. Walters really showing that he's got a lot to learn about being a GM here. Really screams of making a move just for the sake of making a move.

Yes because starting NI tackles are dropping from trees....right.

So any NI who started some games at tackle is a "starting NI tackle?"  There's no variability in quality?  Paul Swiston is therefore a NI starting tackle now.  That's about the level of player we're getting, so don't get your hopes up too high.  Neufeld has much to prove.

The only reason this trade isn't a total fleecing is because we dumped a 14 pick for a 15 one when there will be a full draft pool, but there's no way we should have had to give up 2 rounds in that swap.  Neufeld isn't a top 6 OL for the Riders and had very little chance of making their team next season regardless of Ottawa.  Should have been no need to sweeten the pot, and if it was insisted upon, play hardball.

Neufeld started 13 of 17 games in 2012 and the West-Semi...Pretty different from Paul Swiston's situation.  He occasionally breaks into our terrible starting line.

Steve Morley was a starting tackle for Calgary and started all of 2009 at tackle for us.  Not an indicator of ability, nor an indicator of current ability.

I don't mind the trade at all, if what the previous poster said about him being under contract for three more years then it's pretty good.

I do think the riders win the trade with that second round pick. It would of been better if we swapped third round picks.

I don't hold much weight in any draft picks. Look how great our last first round picks have been playing. A starting non import is easily worth any pick.

Hall won't come back he was going no matter what. We can find someone else, the team didn't die when we dumped Odell and when Hunt left.

In the end this helps us out and Walters did OK.

Lots of people having a strange reaction to this trade in all honesty.

First of all, no big surprise that Hall didn't have the value some thought he did. He's got no term left and he's made it pretty clear that he wants to try the NFL. Not only is he a rental, I'd be surprised if Saskatchewan could afford the pay day it'd take to resign him. I think he's back in the CFL next year but I don't think it's with the Riders.

Neufeld isn't a terrible offensive lineman but he certainly does suck at guard and as odd as it sounds, we suddenly have a mediocre logjam of NI talent at right tackle. Hopefully Pencer translates to guard. This probably means we don't protect Swiston from Ottawa now.

Reasons the draft pick means very little to me ... this is a pretty thin draft with the new eligibility rules so trading out of 2014 and into 2015 works for me. Not a huge fan of the two round drop but to me, that's what you pay for getting a 24 year old NI lineman who is signed through 2015.

...or when Vega left, or Gavin Walls, or Tom Canada, or Daved Benefield or Sefa O'Reilly. Import defensive end isn't exactly the most difficult position to fill. Especially if you're looking for a pass rush specialist.

Judging by the comments on Riderfans about the ability of Patrick Neufeld, I think he & Morley are about the same. If so, we have a younger Steve Morley & gave up a second rounder for him??? The fans in Saskatchewan are all over that. They love they get the 10th pick in the draft & we don't.

So our interim GM has just traded away our second round pick in 2014... for Neufeld a 5th round draft pick who was the weak link on Sask's line this year.

Walters making a case not to be re-hired.  I guess we can defend our next GM by saying that Walters traded away all our picks...

Isn't a 'thin' draft more of a reason to hold onto the 10th pick?
