Heard yesterday morning out of Regina a Rider player had been in a wreck and that it was likely the Rider players fault, didn't know who until afternoon. Then a lot of locals went off on a "brown guy

But somehow league revenues went up?

I don't know what accounting logic teams are using, but the math ain't mathing.

Most of the owners dont mind the tax write off. Some people here dont realize that many of the owners bought these teams for the tax write off. They will never be profitable because that's the way they want it in their over all business holdings.

They run some expenses through the team to make their other businesses look more profitable. As a business man I can assure you that when you own a portfolio of businesses, money is moving all the time

Yeah for a few private owned teams..losses are not a threat to going boobies up..

In all honesty across the board and corporate..sponsor..TV deals..etc.. the league is prob stronger than its been in decades

There are a ton of advantages to having a tax dump.

Tax write off is the wrong way to describe it.

There are ways to integrate businesses and use them for purposes like marketing your other businesses (this is basically the entire reason for the Blue Jays existence for the past 25 years), but there's not really any advantage to running a pro sports team that can't pay its own bills from its own operating revenue. It's not like MLSE can write down losses from their football operation against operating the Leafs or Raptors. That would be a pretty major tax evasion/accounting scandal. It would be way too blatant given how the Argos have basically never done anything but bleed cash.

The real hope for bodies like MLSE and CSEC is to strip operations to the bone to make it break even and outsource a bunch of the work of marketing/operating the team to their other holdings.

If you look at the football operations departments of the Argos and Stamps....they are bare ******* bones. Like Toronto's personnel department is Pinball, Jim Barker and John Hufnagel advising.

That’s terrible and tragic. RIP to the rider player.

LIfe is precious. To die so young. I didn't meet my future wife until I was 30. My first child was born in October of 86 when I was 31. WE had one more child when I was 35. Bought our first house when I was 36. My life really didn't start until after I was 30. jake will never get that chance. So sad. I can't imagine the pain his parents & siblings are going thru. His death affects many people. Relatives, friends, extended family, teammtes, coaches & fans. May Jake Rest in Peace.

Heard yesterday morning out of Regina a Rider player had been in a wreck and that it was likely the Rider players fault, didn't know who until afternoon. Then a lot of locals went off on a "brown guy" taking out a Rider in a wreck....immigrants don't know which side of the road to drive on etc. Sickening ****.

Sadly a lot of pro athletes in contact sports spend a lot of their career/life blasted out of their mind on weed and analgesics. There's also that feeling of invincibility.

In communities I'm involved with there's a lot of guys who cause carnage like this who die young and are looked at as heroes, awards named after them etc. Always kind of makes me sick. Would be nice if eventually we get to a place where we can talk about how irresponsible drinking/substance abuse and driving are. Use these situations as the cautionary tale and don't bury the reality of what happened.

Sorry but I completely disagree with your business assessment. You better believe that they can write down profits from other sectors of their operation with losses from another. 100% that happens. I worked in corporate, then owned multiple businesses of my own, and can tell you that is exactly what happens. That is the point of a tax dump. I'm not suggesting they want to lose any more money than they have to, but owners around the league never bought these teams with high expectations of profitabiliity and were fully aware that they were in all probability buying a tax dump. There is no tax evasion for using capital losses from one enterprise against capital gains in another so long as they are all under the same umbrella. That is not an accounting scandal. I did it several times throughout my businesses and was also audited on a couple of them. No problems because it was legit.

For many of the corporations the community and national goodwill of owning a money losing CFL team, is worth the losses they incur. Perception in the public eye is huge to companies like Rogers. This probably offers a really cheap way to buy goodwill because there is a lot of exposure by owning a CFL team to this act of "community goodwill" than other avenues of doing so.

This is horrible for everyone involved.

I get wanting to get statements out there looking sympathetic but I think you need to wait to canonize people until all the facts are out there

Tragic that in this day and age people are still risking lives with impaired driving. If that is indeed what happened.

I would assume with the stuff in his vehicle...the fact he was in the wrong lane...sadly its a good chance he was impaired....sad story all around for sure....as it was totally preventable

Yep, I don't wanna play the impaired card yet...but you end up in the wrong lane by falling asleep or being drunk. So badly hungover maybe...or drunk...either way alcohol and drugs played a role.

and it's worse than just drifting into oncoming traffic. Divided highway with two lanes in each direction per CBC

"RCMP say investigation found Dalke had been driving a silver SUV northbound in the southbound lane on Highway 11 between Regina and Lumsden. The entire stretch of Highway 11 between Regina and Lumsden is divided, with two lanes in each direction."

Oh man. Not as tragic now in my opinion. Unfortunately dude made a decision that cost him his life

Luckily he didn’t take anyone with him.

Just horrible. I don't know how you handle that as a public facing organization. I think it's fair to morn the passing of Dalke. But they should maybe also do something to honour the victim....? I don't know, this situation is just awful.

It was my understanding that he did. Both drivers died.

RCMP confirmed he stole gas at the Co-Op in Lumsden minutes prior to the crash.

He was either out of his mind on substances or a pure *******.

Did not know that...definitely out of his mind on something. Paid for it with his life, unfortunately the other guy is the real victim not him. I have no sympathy for Dalke at all, but feel for his family.

yikes...adds a different layer to things...tragic and sad...so pretty evident he was impaired, or just not a high character guy. He did play on edge and was a known head shot artist...so didn't really seem to have a lick of concern about opponents safety

Hope they come out and make a statement and denounce impaired driving...maybe do some public awareness stuff about the dangers of it
