Really easy to always say that there's some mystical coach out there that would be a better fit.  We've been through generations as CFL fans watching teams including our own who keep believing that.

I read on X today that the Ti Cats are pursuing Lawler "hard". Most of the best players are gone now to the Elks ( of course we won't ask how they can afford it with the salary cap). Will we lose him now?

so tired of people complaining about the salary cap when they have no idea how it works

we play this game literally every year “omg how can these 5? 6? teams do this does the salary cap not exist?” and then maybe 1 at most is over at the end of the season

Breaking News: The CFL has allotted a special "**** You" salary cap exemption to the new Edmonton Elks owner Larry Thompson of 15.5 million thereby thanking him for his taking over the disastrous franchise when nobody would.  "We're just getting started. I might even buy a few star players under contract with other teams now. No one can stop me!!!" Said Ed Hervey excitedly as he grabbed a helmet & flung it through his office wall.

Well, explain it then instead of complaining. Tell us how the Elks can continue to sign players in free agency with a salary cap of $5.9 million? if you can explain it, then I'm all ears. Or in this case, eyes as you're posting an answer. The more Hervey spends, the more they have to subtract at some point later.

So why can't someone, ANYONE outbid the Bombers for Fatboi? Please?

Osh will never let that happen. If Fatboi had military experience he'd be lining up for us at age 75

They have 2 QBs making what our 1 is. They also had less “impact” players than the bombers. They been a **** show. It makes sense they would throw money around cuz the 2 guys making the most last year MBT and Lewis ain’t around this year.  It sounds like they overpaying guys a bit but they can cuz their roster was cheap after Lewis and MBT really.

What is there to explain? They are adding contracts they can afford to add.

Mike is right,  why do people every season seemingly are confused that certain teams can have more money to spend then others during the off season.

It's almost like Edmonton is trying to rotate out their roster and bring in fresh faces and remove old faces and start anew.    While a team like Winnipeg only has to fill in a smaller amount of holes so naturally they won't have as many signings.    It still doesn't change the fact that Winnipeg still has the same amount of players signed and probably just as many high priced veterans who are making higher then minimum amount of salary.

The elks were a **** team with **** players. They're dumping their trash and trying to build their team through free agency.

I think it’s a bit worse this year because of all the sorta un capped media money, and the bc lions still not having been punished for last year.
As always, the teams with the fewest players hold over add the most.
losing all star players and adding guys well below that tier is a bitter pill to swallow as well. Though I don’t think it’s a bad approach at all if we can get multiple pieces to fill out multiple gaps. I’ll be happy if we add a few more solid starters and depth guys at our positions of greatest need.

Yeah, losing Lawler definitely hurts if that ends up being the case. That being said, we haven’t won the Grey Cup with him the last two years either so I’m willing to try something different.

it can go one of many ways, but with our front office shake up, I’m hoping maybe we can see some talent brought in for position groups we’ve struggled with for the past couple seasons (edge rusher, linebacker) … they’ve got the pedigree for it, that’s for sure

Yeah if we get one of the next 2-3 guys I’m good with that. Some change finally might do us good. We could certainly use more of a diverse skill set from our WRs.

We not winning the cup last few yrs had nothing to do with the players...tho the injured ones we tried to play with didn't help...or the lack of depth in key spots...but that all points to the reason we lost.

Not that surprised. I kind of saw the writing on the wall with the signing of Mitchell and then signing Schoen  Even at a pay cut we’re spending a lot of money on our receiving core. We’ll probably bring in a second tier reciever and hope we can bring in the next Schoen or Wilson In training camp.

Sucks to see lawler go, leaving a second time for cash after the dui injuries etc, don’t really want him back again.

I kind of hope we go with a low risk high reward vet on a real good deal, and bring in a bunch of blue chip prospects at wr. Spend more money on the lines.

Have to remember the cap doesn’t count until the end of the season. A lot can happen between now and opening day and then during the season players can be released or 6-gamed. So teams can spend whatever they want right now and take all year to make it work out in the end.

Thank you but I already knew that however I appreciate your explanation. My cynicism comes from the fact that reports from TSN reporters like Farhan Lalji & Dave Naylor as well as social media stories all said that last season the BC LIons were considerably over the cap to the point that they may lose a draft pick. That would be in the neighbourhood of $100,000 or more. Vancouver was hosting the Grey Cup last season & Lions owner Amar Doman's team was hell bent on getting his team into the game to ensure a sell out. He didn't care financially how much he was over when it came to the salary cap. Teams don't care about losing a draft pick anymore. Why should they when they can poach a bunch of players to make up for it in free agency? It seems that this type of thing is going on more & more so as a fan it's hard for me to trust that other teams aren't doing it as well.

The salary cap violations for last year aren't revealed until April so we don't know how much BC was over. They admitted in November they will be over but by how much was still to be determined.  They had until the end of December to try to minimize the cap hit.

As far as losing a pick goes, no team has actually done that since 2007 so it looks like that threat may actually work. BC was 83k over in 2023 (worst in the league) so if 2024 was as bad as speculated, they may end that streak.

BC Lions owner Doman is a rich owner & has a lot of cash. We're flush with cash as well after so many great seasons. With the Grey Cup here, I was hoping we'd use a bit of that money to go after some CFL free agents but it doesn't look like Walters will. I'm not an advocate of cheating  but WTH??? if other teams are doing it then we should be as well especially this year.

I know loyalty doesn't count for much with players these days with the 1 year contracts but dammit, we stood by him as a team & as a fanbase after that DUI & broken arm. Guess it works one way. Just let him go wherever he wants. I could care less.

If we go with jones/jones and ayers as our wil/mac and continue the dime sub pack for the wil on some plays I think that hole is already filled.

At nose, I think they will also maintain the status quo. Lawson will hopefully take more reps than jake, he and woods will trade off those inside duties.

On a side note, I think the rules committee should allow jake to use the waggle.  He's soo damn slow it's the only way he can line up off the ball and consistently get to the OL before the ball is thrown. 😂 I really hope he doesn't take as many or more snaps than woods/lawson this year.

I'd be ok with them going after a big FA or two as well but on the other hand, these teams that go big in FA never seem to win so is it worth it in the end?  We haven't gone that route, the Argos have been pretty quiet so far as has Montreal.  When is the last time a team went crazy in FA and it actually resulted in a championship?
