This has been the best update in a long time, now lets get that patient count down

NEW Last updated: December 21, 2020

Public health officials advise four additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today including:

a female in her 60s from the Southern Health-Santé Sud health region;
a female in her 90s from the Winnipeg health region;
a female in her 90s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to an outbreak at the Charleswood Care Centre; and
a female in her 90s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to an outbreak at the Park Manor Care.
The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 11.5 per cent provincially and 10.5 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30 a.m. today, 167 new cases of the virus have been identified. However, one case was corrected and removed. This means the net new number of cases is 166, which brings the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 23,025.

Today’s COVID-19 data shows:

nine cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region;
25 cases in the Northern health region;
seven cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
43 cases in the Southern Health-Santé Sud health region; and
83 cases in the Winnipeg health region.
The data also shows:

5,736 active cases and 16,717 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19;
there are 310 people in hospital with 42 people in intensive care due to COVID-19; and
the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 572.
Laboratory testing numbers show 1,949 tests were completed yesterday, bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February to 405,724. Case investigations continue and if a public health risk is identified, the public will be notified.

Meanwhile, in Alabamberta: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/emergency-injunction-government-covid-public-health-orders-1.5849157

Quote

A Calgary judge will issue a decision Monday afternoon after hearing an emergency application seeking an order that would nullify Alberta's COVID-related public health requirements, including restrictions on gatherings and mandatory masks.

Lawyers for the group of plaintiffs — including two southern Alberta churches and a Calgary gym owner — say the province's COVID-19 restrictions violate their constitutional rights.

A Calgary law firm and the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms appeared in court Monday to apply for the emergency injunction staying Alberta's public health restrictions.

In the application, Heights Baptist Church in Medicine Hat and Northside Baptist Church in Calgary, along with three individuals, argued that a number of their constitutional rights have been violated, including limiting peoples' ability to gather for both social and religious reasons, along with travelling and conducting business or expressing themselves.

The Justice Centre accuses the government of "cancelling Christmas" and suggests COVID-19 has not created an emergency beyond the normal scope of illness and death in the province.

Lawyers for the applicants say Albertans under the age of 60 are more likely to be murdered than die of the virus and argue lockdown measures cause "far more harm than any harm from COVID-19," according to a press release.

Rath & Company, the law firm representing the plaintiffs, said the government is "bankrupting businesses and stripping citizens of Alberta of virtually all of their rights under the Alberta Bill of Rights and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms."

Unbelievable. I hope the judge shoots down this nonsense while also letting these clowns know how thoughtless and inconsiderate they are.

Alabamaberta is right.......******* lunatics out here. I live right in the heart of rural AB, where things are worst. People are going insane about something as simple as having to wear a mask, never mind the more serious restrictions. The screams about the charter of rights and freedoms is straight from the premier himself, who said he hates to "violate people's constitutionally held rights and freedoms..." Oi. Vey.

These near-eyed mouther breathers get my goat every time the wail and moan about the Charter of Rights and their ******* freedoms... they pretend to know what the hell they are talking about, I doubt they have even actually read this document they love to bandy about and wave in the face of tyrany... because:

Rights and freedoms in Canada

1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.

It's the first ******* right!@

Perhaps the anti-maskers could be offered a compromise. If they want to serve as companions or housekeeping staff in a COVID ward while not wearing PPE for a week, they could be allowed to skip the mask requirement.

Everything You Need to Know About the New COVID Variant

Anew variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19, is thought to be driving increased transmission of the disease in parts of the UK. The government has placed some regions including London under new, stricter coronavirus restrictions, known as Tier 4. People in Tier 4 areas will not be able to gather with anyone outside their household for Christmas, while those in the rest of the country can only gather on Christmas Day itself.

Boris Johnson, the prime minister, and his chief scientific advisors said that the new variant could increase transmission of COVID-19 by as much as 70% and increase the R or reproduction number by 0.4.

What’s the significance of this new discovery? The Conversation asked Lucy van Dorp, a microbial genomics researcher and an expert in the evolution of pathogens, some key questions about what we know at this point in time.

What do we know about this new variant?
The new UK variant, known as VUI–202012/01 or lineage B.1.1.7, was first announced by Matt Hancock, the health secretary on December 14. It was subsequently confirmed by Public Health England and the UK’s COVID-19 sequencing consortium. Screening back through databases of SARS-CoV-2 the first sample was taken in the county of Kent on September 20.

The variant carries 14 defining mutations including seven in the spike protein, the protein that mediates entry of the virus into human cells. This is a relatively large number of changes compared to the many variants we have in circulation globally.

To date, genetic profiles—or genomes—of this variant have been largely sequenced and shared from the UK but include some in Denmark and two cases in Australia. There have also been reports of a case in the Netherlands. These countries all have very large genome sequencing efforts and it is very possible that these observations do not reflect the true distribution of this variant of the virus, which could exist undetected elsewhere. We will know more as more genomes are generated and shared.

Thanks to the efforts of data sharing, genomic surveillance and COVID-19 test results in the UK, it seems that this variant is now starting to dominate over existing versions of the virus and that it may be responsible for an increasing proportion of cases in parts of the country, particular in regions where we also have rapidly expanding case numbers.

Most of the new cases — 92 — are in the Winnipeg Health region. The Northern Health region had 27 new cases, and there were 17 in Southern Health, 10 in Prairie Mountain and nine in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

Nice to see Winnipeg still under 100 new cases and the test positivity rate not going up..

Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate — a rolling average of the COVID-19 tests that come back positive — is down to 10.4 per cent from 11.5 per cent on Tuesday. That's the lowest it's been since Nov. 9, when the provincewide rate was 9.5 per cent.

In Winnipeg, the test positivity rate is now 10.2 per cent, a provincial news release said.
