Covid-19

I'm starting this thread as a side discussion of all things Corona Virus related. I understand that this is going to be discussed in almost all other topic threads but we could collect news and other items here.

At work, many conferences have been cancelled.

NBA - Suspended.

NHL - About to be suspended.

NCAA March Madness - Playing - no crowd.

Political Rallies have been cancelled.

Travel bans.

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks tested positive. They're in Australia where testing is available. If they were in the US, they wouldn't have been tested.

That's Trump.

Yes N95 masks are supposed to be single use. But I suspect people are reusing them since ce they are in short supply.

I’d guess if it’s a choice between reusing an N95 or using a lower quality mask, people will consider it to be worth the risk.  I got a comfortable cloth mask from CBS, no problem wearing it at all.

That's not what she told me as I asked. Even the N95's. They're all one time only masks. As an RN since 1985 she is horrified seeing the way people treat masks. Like always fidgeting with them. Or pulled halfway down their face... so their nose is exposed.

Then maybe a combination of a disposable mask and face shield.

Looks like the Miami Marlins have cancelled their home opener as a whole bunch of the players and a few coaches have tested positive for Covid 19

Exactly.

Limited re-use.
His was not a factual statement.

Anti-masking groups draw from anti-vaccination playbook to spread misinformation

Downplaying dangers of COVID-19, taking research out of context are common strategies, experts say

“It disturbs me when I see people acting on information that I'm quite sure is not only incorrect, but potentially misleading and potentially leading to harmful outcomes," said Dr. Matthew Oughton, an infectious disease specialist at McGill University.

Although scientists are continuing to learn about the novel coronavirus, it appears that people with COVID-19 can be most infectious before they show any symptoms, Oughton said.

That's different from many other viruses — including the first version of SARS. It's a key reason why it's important for people to wear masks — even if they feel perfectly healthy — when physical distancing isn't possible to prevent transmission, medical experts say.

Eight more players and two coaches with the Miami Marlins have tested positive for COVID-19, as an outbreak has spread throughout their clubhouse and brought the total of cases in recent days to at least 14, sources familiar with the situation tell me and @JesseRogersESPN.

- Under agreement MLB Comissioner Manfred has power to suspend/cancel season if a team or teams suffer an outbreak and competitive integrity is compromised.

The beginning of the end for baseball’s season? And other sports?

Knock on wood but the bubble for the NBA seems to be working so far and I have similar hopes for hockey. Now the MLB/NFL model, nope.

Soccer leagues in Europe did pretty well also but they had brought down new cases significantly before restarting, Florida is on fire but by having NBA players in a bubble they can control it better. In baseball it's been barely a week and you see players and coaches not wearing masks properly.

So like I said. They are designed to be single use but people are using them multiple times because they're hard to find right now.

Oh look you’re changing the argument because you were wrong

Yes you can reuse n95 masks if necessary - the end

Yanks/Phillies game also called off, this could go pear shaped quickly for baseball, considering that the Marlins just played in Philadelphia and are still there not surprising

They weren't designed for reuse & you can tell by the wording of that article that reusing them isn't a good idea. My wife has been an RN for 35 years & I'll go by her word  as she is has been trained & is an expert on masks as that is her job.

You were the one complaining about not having any options etc etc...  I simply presented you with an option that medical professionals are, in fact, using.

This option allows you to extend the life of 4-5 masks for one month... likely more if you are not in a medical environment - i.e. a school bus

MLB situation is so much different because there's no bubble. NHL announced today that there were 0 positive cases over the last week, and now all the teams are in the bubble and will be tested daily. In theory, everything SHOULD be okay, but we'll see how things go. I have high hopes for Bubble Life.

And let’s not forget...Ontario said no to hosting Blue Jay baseball during these times. 👍

Who is changing their argument? I literally said they are supposed to be single use but people are re-using them because of a shortage.

Best practices for N-95 is no re-use.

The end.

Except it isn't that simple and the link you posted demonstrates just that. Being able to reuse a N95 mask safely goes way beyond necessity.

My initial post stated that n95 can be reused as the dental office my step daughter works at is reusing them effectively.  Therefore it is possible - addressing Speedflex's concerns.

You chimed in that they 'supposed' to be single use... a point which literally no one was arguing against.

But sure congratulations.

Actually reusing an n95 mask is more about consideration for other people since supplies are strained...

If you have four masks, you basically rotate their use each day and store the others in a paper bag in a clean environment.

Yes in a perfect world they are single use... but they remain effective for a month - so instead of wasting 28 n95 masks or more - you use four in a month.

Not sure what is so deeply offensive about this basic scientifically proven concept.

Supplies may be strained but I bet cost is a consideration.

Not really...see below

N95 respirators can be safely decontaminated without undermining functional integrity only two or three times, a government study showed.Apr 15, 2020

Toronto and Ontario gave the okay for the Blue Jays to play home games in Toronto. It was the Feds that nixed it.
