Covid-19

I'm starting this thread as a side discussion of all things Corona Virus related. I understand that this is going to be discussed in almost all other topic threads but we could collect news and other items here.

At work, many conferences have been cancelled.

NBA - Suspended.

NHL - About to be suspended.

NCAA March Madness - Playing - no crowd.

Political Rallies have been cancelled.

Travel bans.

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks tested positive. They're in Australia where testing is available. If they were in the US, they wouldn't have been tested.

Americans are going to wipe themselves off the map. If there's a God, we'll be able to keep them out of our country for a long time...

Maybe they'll look back on their approach to healthcare and consider change for the better. They have the resources to be a 'healthcare superpower' the same way they are a military superpower. Just have to sort out those priorities and vote accordingly

My big hope for all of this is a societal shift in priorities. Let's end the "**** you I got mine" era and go back to actually working towards the common good.

A big victory for Dems in november goes a long way to changing things.  And Im not even saying rah rah liberals forever, but a big victory shifts the US in a better direction and likely pushes the right towards a more productive republican party too.  Also, a Democrat-led justice department is going to have a huge amount of work to do to sift through the carnage of the Trump admin.

Ginsburg is 87 and Breyer is 81. Trump controls senate. There is a terrifying chance that he could be appointing another 2 supreme court justices and stack SCOTUS 7-2 with republican appointees that could sit for another 20-30 years. Dems need a big win.

It’s a shame Mitt is so wishy washy. He’d be a vast vast improvement over trump.  Well, so would a tree stump. But my point remains.

Canadian Armed Forces told to prepare for waves, worst case scenario: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/covid19-military-vance-1.5504247

The Canadian military is preparing to respond to multiple waves of the COVID-19 pandemic which could stretch out over a year or more, the country's top military commander said in his latest planning directive.

Gen. Jonathan Vance, the chief of the defence staff, warned in a memo on Thursday that requests for assistance can be expected "from all echelons of government and the private sector and they will likely come to the Department [of National Defence] through multiple points of entry."

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Makes sense but man, this is unsettling.

CNN’s Sanjay Gupta found himself shocked after watching President Donald Trump try to correct Dr. Anthony Fauci about potential coronavirus treatments.

Shortly after the president’s press conference ended, CNN host John King highlighted Fauci shooting down the idea of using an antimalarial drug to treat the virus.

“The information that you’re referring to [regarding the drug] is anecdotal,” Fauci said. “It was not done in a controlled clinical trial, so you really can’t make any definitive statement about it.”

He then showed a clip of Trump undercutting his own administration’s top medical expert.

“What the doctor said is 100 percent correct, it is early,” the president began, but then added, “I have seen things that are impressive, we’ll see, we’ll know soon.”

King then brought on Gupta to ask for his reaction — and he didn’t hold back.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, John,” he said. “That was incredible to see this back-and-forth. First of all, the president said that this drug was approved for coronavirus yesterday, it is not. He said there’s a lot of evidence to show how promising it is, there is a one 20-person study out of France that Dr. Tony Fauci described as ‘anecdotal.’”

WATCH: Dr. Fauci facepalms right behind Trump after he rants about ‘Deep State Department’

Dr. Anthony Fauci was caught on camera putting his hand over his face during one of President Donald Trump’s rants about the “deep state” on Friday.

While at a press conference about the coronavirus pandemic, Trump said that he would like to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “go back to the State Department — or as they call it, the Deep State Department — and do his job.”

At this point, Fauci facepalmed even as Trump kept talking.

Yeah, why would he even bother touching his face when there are many, many people out there willing and eager to “touch” his face for him...😉😎

The U.S.-Canada land border serves as an economic engine that supports over $2.4 billion dollars in daily trade. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States and Canada are temporarily restricting all non-essential travel across its borders. In each of our countries, we are encouraging people to exercise caution by avoiding unnecessary contact with others. This collaborative and reciprocal measure is an extension of that prudent approach.

“Non-essential” travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature.

The United States and Canada recognize it is critical we preserve supply chains between both countries. These supply chains ensure that food, fuel, and life-saving medicines reach people on both sides of the border. Supply chains, including trucking, will not be impacted by this new measure. Americans and Canadians also cross the land border every day to do essential work or for other urgent or essential reasons, and that travel will not be impacted.

This decision will be implemented on March 21, 2020, at which time the U.S. and Canada will temporarily restrict all non-essential travel across the U.S.-Canada land border. The measure will be in place for 30 days, at which point it will be reviewed by both parties.
