Two Riders Charged With Assault

REGINA - Two members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders football team have been charged with aggravated assault following a fight at a nightclub.

Regina police say the two men were arrested Wednesday after a 20-year-old man was sent to hospital Aug. 18 suffering serious injuries.

Defensive back Dwight Anderson and wide receiver Taj Smith each face one charge of aggravated assault.

They were to appear in provincial court Thursday morning.

The Roughrider organization says it has been informed of the charges but declined further comment

I just watched the media scrum with Brendan Taman. The Rider "Code of Conduct" was brought up by a reporter. Taman was asked if it is still valid & he said yes it is. He had no comment when asked if it applies to Smith & Anderson. Taman said they can keep playing both guys until their court case is heard likely some time next year if they want. He didn't even mention if  he is considering suspending them so I think I know where this will be going. They'll play no matter any Code of Conduct.

Now we'll see if this code which is supposedly likened to the bible within the Riders organization really means anything.  If not, then winning a Grey Cup is more important to the Riders organization than any bogus set of high moral community standards & conduct rules written on a worthless piece of paper. They play & the Riders are two faced.

That being said, what did you want the Rider players to do Iso?  Just stand there and be pummeled by angry Somalis with baseball bats?  The Somalis control a lot of the cocaine trade in that area with the Bakken Oil fields being close by, I wonder if there is more to this story.  I have a hard time believing that this was just a random attack for no reason whatsoever.

Some folks on RF suggested they may have adopted the initiation methods of the NS gang in Regina ... beat the **** out of a Rider and you're in. Maybe not a bad theory.

Without being there or having any info other than total hearsay

well reports were that there was a fight between a bunch of riders and gang members and one guy went to hospital and only two riders got charged and by all accounts the gang memebrs started it. So what do you think could have happened to end up with only 2 riders being charged other than them being singled out as taking "defending themselves" too far?

hey, any news on the bomber bible group?

So does that mean that the Bombers defense is part of the gang now after the number they did on Durant last weekend?

Or......

Riders swagger in like they own the place, gang tells them they in fact do not own the place, chirp, chirp, shove, punch. Anderson and Smith feel the need to put on a show on some poor sod.

I highly doubt the Crown would want to lay charges, especially very serious ones like aggravated assault, on Rider players unless there is a high likelihood of conviction, certainly a higher standard than they'd apply to the alleged gang members involved.  They don't want or need media.  Something happened, and they need to have a pretty good idea that there was intent to cause serious physical harm to someone (often use of a weapon) to proceed with aggravated assault charges.  Safe to say they didn't grab the guy by the belt loops like the last Rider brought before the courts.

Why would you even put yourself in a position like that where it could escalate out of control like that. Have to that thought in the back of your head of your position in the community and how it would reflect on your work place.

The question has to be asked just why this kind of thing happens to the Rider organization than any other team in the CFL? In the last 10 years just look at all the players & a general manager getting into trouble.

Or this guytumblr_lhd0ju1ODB1qdir3m.jpg

I may be an SOB, but I'm YOUR SOB

Rider Fans for the defense case is thus :

1. Let the courts sort it out don't  jump to conclusions

2. In the mean time if you dont sympathize with anderson and smith you're a hater.

Add a third Rider player to the list. Eron Riley?

I heard 3 as well but where did you hear it was Reiley?

Jamie Nye reported that it was Eron Riley

See it for yourself. Nothing is safe from the internet nowadays:

edit: Thanks, Jpan85. Actually, I didn't know that BBCode has 'youtube' tags.

DA and Smith are listed as starters for tomorrow's games  (just to get Iso going;) )

They really must of wanted to fight because Pure is a block down the street from Bushwakkers.

Nah, I expected it.

There is also a rumor going around that some montreal players might be facing charges as a result of this fight as well.

Code of conduct doesn't seem to mean much, clearly just a PR stunt in the wake of the Trevis Smith embarrassment.  Pretty common in most professions for people to go on paid leave while a serious court case such as this is settled.

Pretty sure the source of that rumour is a certain Riderfans.com poster who is rather short on credibilty.

According to a CBC report:

The Regina Police Service said there are no additional suspects in the case, which has been the talk of coffee row in the city of 200,000.

Ah didn't know about the RPS release.

Yeah you are right on the source of the rumor. Some of the stuff he leaks pans out, so I figured I would clearly state it was just a rumor.

Bushwakker statement on the video

Bushwakker Brewing Company

The Bushwakker has been dragged, reluctantly, into the news recently. Regina is now aware of the events that took place near the Bushwakker on the morning of August 18 and which involved a group of Saskatchewan Roughrider team members. Not only are we Roughrider fans, but the Roughriders bring us business, so we are doubly concerned and hope that this does not deprive Regina of seeing our home team in a home Grey Cup.

Some of those events were captured on two of our security cameras. We want to make it clear that:

1. Our security cameras were the only aspect of Bushwakker involvement. At the time of the incident the Bushwakker had been closed for over two hours, and, to the best of our knowledge, none of those involved had been in the Bushwakker.

2. The police investigators came to us asking about the possibility that relevant security footage might be available. We had not viewed that footage and until then were not aware of the incident.

3. We have not discussed these events with any representatives of the media until now, after charges have been laid.

4. And FYI, the time stamp on our security system is late by roughly 10 minutes. The events happened at 3:00 AM, not 2:50AM.

It looks like they are trying not to be blamed for the arrests.
