US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Quote

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

You are so daft. Those other states are ones that Democrats actually wanted to win. And ones they felt they had a chance to win.

Like I said, people got excited about close polls, but no one ever seriously thought Texas was going to flip. They hoped, but they didn't count on it like they did some of those other states. Hell even Florida was not a state that Biden put a lot of effort into.

So, Biden backing renewable resources doesn't affect the vote in Va, West Va, PA, Ohio & Michigan like it does in Texas? Dream on.  Coal mining & shale oil in those States. So banning fracking is an important issue in those & other States. Closing down the oil & coal industry is big news. He has a problem.

Sure maybe some of it does, but there's lots of issues at play here, and honestly people expect a Biden win in PA and Michigan now that advance ballots are being counted... so what was your point?

Honestly I don't think it's as big a deal as you make it out to be. Those oil and gas votes are the types that are likely to find other reasons to vote R rather than Democrat anyway.

It's good policy to plan for a transition away from fossil fuels anyway. That doesn't mean you do it all at once and I don't think the Democrats are planning that anyway, but planning for the future is something every government needs to do. It's the big flaw in Alberta too. Kenney and his voters want to go all in on oil and gas, but the world is saying "yeah we need to plan to get away from that".

Just tired of backwards assed thinkers trying to make the world see things their way.

This..... even the O/G companies seem to be more interested in achieving environmental benchmarks than the AB gov't, which just wants things to look like 1996 (...which, as we know, I'm normally a big fan of, but not in this instance....)

Make sure Ivanka and Pops return the keys and any duplicates made.

Coal is as dirty a fuel resource as it gets. Oil is better in a number of ways but that's not saying much; it still pollutes. Hydraulic fracking is useful for getting to unconventional oil deposits but it still creates significant pollution. Of course, civilization still relies heavily on these resources but a transition to alternative types that are less harmful to the environment is a necessary step for humanity - whether we want to do that or not.

Planning for the future by way of advancing technology to be better for the world around us shouldn't be taken as some slight directed at the aforementioned industries. Progress is inevitable and the way in which we continue to advance as a civilization isn't an exception to that, regardless of who wins or loses in the end. If Trump and his supporters want to twist facts, create falsehoods, and spread lies to fit their archaic narrative, that's on them. But it doesn't make Biden or other proponents of transitioning to renewable clean energy the "socialist/communist/liberal anti-Murica" villains they're being made out to be. That's simply a viewpoint created from a perspective of ignorance and outright fear-mongering (the latter of which is comical because MAGAts consistently accuse their opponents of fear-mongering on things like racial inequality, police brutality, systemic injustice, and other important social issues).

Coal, oil, and shale oil are a finite resource; they will eventually run out on this planet. It seems only reasonable to prepare for that future.

Fracking is a scam..... the industry has never, not once, made a profit. it runs on loans, and has had an investment into it of one quarter of a trillion dollars, over the last eight or so years.

it doesnt just pollute, it causes earthquakes.

FYI, shale oil is not the only time that franking is used. There is a ton of fracking in other areas that is more profitable.

The problem with shale oil is that the wells don't last. They die off quickly and the initial investment doesn't pay off.

I don't know, he doesn't work on contingency and Trump doesn't pay his bills. Might not be a good match.
