US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

From CNN:

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump hosted his top military brass and their spouses for dinner at the White House on Thursday night. The group posed for a photo. Then this exchange with reporters happened:

Trump: "You guys know what this represents? Maybe it's the calm before the storm."
Reporter: "What's the storm?"
Trump: "It could be ... the calm, the calm before the storm."
Trump: "We have the world's great military people in this room, I will tell you that. And uh, we're gonna have a great evening, thank you all for coming."
Reporter: "What storm, Mr. President?"
Trump: "You'll find out."

For all those on this board reading the above who think people are snowflakes, 'libtards ', hypocrites every time they criticize Donald Trump and /or for the people who also use the Obama (insert other names) was a lot worse,  how would you explain Trump's exchange with these reporters?

Like seriously, what other argument could you use to defend this approach other than we're a bunch of Libtards /snowflakes who would be a lot worse off if Clinton and Obama were in charge?

This simple exchange just  piled on another trigger in elevating people's  real anxieties that they are trying to deal with minute by minute. It is completely absurd a person in a leadership position (right, left, middle) can't recognize that .

Therefore talking about this man shot way past political ideology a long, long time ago.

So, he'll be declaring war on North Korea sooner rather than later...?

And imagine all those Generals and other military people in the room just shaking their heads at this guy.  Like he's joking about war... he's tragically out of touch.  Same guy that goes to Puerto Rico, calls it a "wonderful day" and "a good news story" and throws paper towels to people.  His Sec of State is right, Trump is a ******* moron

In an interview with Esquire, Corker said that he started working when he was 13, collecting trash and bagging ice. Later he worked at Western Auto and as a construction laborer.[11] After graduating from college, he worked for four years as a construction superintendent.[12] During this time he saved up $8,000, which he used to start a construction company, Bencor, in 1978.[13] The company's first large contract was with Krystal restaurants, building drive-through windows.[12] The construction company became successful, growing at 80 percent per year, according to Corker, and by the mid-1980s carried out projects in 18 states.[11][13] He sold the company in 1990.[14]

In 1999, Corker acquired two of the largest real estate companies in Chattanooga: Osborne Building Corporation and Stone Fort Land Company.[12] In 2006 he sold the properties and assets that had formed these companies to Chattanooga businessman Henry Luken.[15]

This upsets me. General Kelly is highly regarded. It’s one thing to babysit Trump behind the scenes but he’s essentially Saying he’s not upset Trump was a ****, he’s upset someone found out and called him on it.

I haven’t watched the video  I wonder if he explains that it was trump who made calling widows political and it was trump who lied about it

Yup.  General Kelly sold his soul yesterday.  This is what the Trump White House does.  They attack people and then when people defend themselves they act as if they are the victims.  kelly said how disgusted he was that the Congresswoman made it political and yet it was Trump that started it.  Kelly went on to attack her for something else so he couldnt even pretend to take the high road.

Plus, even if we grant Trump said something stupid but didnt mean it maliciously, he then lied.  His Press Secretary lied.  His Chief of Staff then confirms Trump said what the Congresswoman and the family said he said and that which Trump and his Press Sec. lied about.  Trump then goes back to lying.

What a morally repugnant administration.  And to think its' now bringing a respected General down into the muck.

How bad do you have to be when George Dub chimes in against you.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/19/george-w-bush-trump-bigotry-lies-coded-attack

Quote

George W Bush sharply condemned bigotry, conspiracy theories and lies in American politics on Thursday, in what seemed to be a coded attack on the presidency of Donald Trump.

Without mentioning Trump by name, the former US president urged Americans to reject white supremacy and embrace globalization in a speech organized by the institute that bears his name in New York.

“Bigotry seems emboldened,” said Bush, who has seen controversy over his 2001-09 presidency among liberals and abroad eclipsed by the outrage surrounding Trump. “Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication.”

He added: “Bigotry in any form is blasphemy against the American creed and it means the very identity of our nation depends on the passing of civic ideals to the next generation. We need a renewed emphasis on civic learning in schools.”

....

“Our young people need positive role models,” he said. “Bullying and prejudice in our public life sets a national tone, provides permission for cruelty and bigotry, and compromises the moral education of children.”

...

Bush did, however, attend Trump’s inauguration and reportedly told those around him of the latter’s speech: “That was some weird ****.”

...

Bush characterized the current era as a “unique moment” that threatened the pillars of US democracy.

“We need to recall and recover our own identity,” he said. “Americans have a great advantage. To renew our country, we only need to remember our values.”

I always felt Bush would be remembered by history more fondly than when he was President.  The thing about former Presidents is, there is ideological disagreements but rarely the sort of discourse Trump has created.  The Bush's, Clintons and Obamas always showed respect and fondness towards one another.

There was a "report" going around that after the election, when some of the Russian stuff started coming to light, Obama enlisted the counsel of the former Presidents.  The Steele Dossier was reportedly financed by the Bush family (some dispute this).

But if you ever saw Bush and Obama and their families together, you'd never think they were opposition.  It was H.W. that, after suffering a terrible defeat to Clinton, wrote him a really nice note which has become tradition (I dont know if it began with H.W. but that seems to be the first one that pops up).

I cant imagine future gatherings of the Presidents including Trump and looking as warm and "fun" as they do now.  Despite strong disagreements, I think most people look at the Presidents and see men who were patriots and deeply wanted to do what they felt was best for the United States.  Its fair to say many people dont feel that way about Trump.

I just can't imagine a school ever being named after Trump - unless they go back to to the old lexicons (ie "Donald Trump School For the Insane").

Every time someone (media, politician etc) responds to Trump's craziness, we're playing right into his hands.

He likes chaos,  he likes attention good or bad and revels in it. He truly thinks he is a master of ratings, a genius if you will.

Imagine taking a totally different approach and not responding nor reporting on anything Trump (and his ardent supporters) does or says. Let the Fox news network take care of that.

I think that would totally drive him over the bend. It's a very similar approach that very smart people have said about how to deal with racist groups.

Amazing. General Kelly lied about the congresswoman’s remarks. There is video to prove it.

Sanders admits she saw the video but claims Kelly stands by his statement. Media says but he was wrong. Sanders chastises the media for daring to question a general. Wow.

They aren’t even pretending they they dislike democracy. It’s right out in the open. Do not question military leaders even when they lie.

Kelly sold out for Trump. Very sad.

I did hear Trump's call to a widow who just lost her husband & recorded the phone call. I have to say... he did a great job with that call. He actually sounded like he cared. Didn't make it all about himself. I have to say I was impressed & didn't expect it at all.
