The thing we know for sure is that Toronto really likes Brady. They wanted him two years ago but had to settle for the back up prize instead. But Brady was their first choice. So we know they'd love to have him... But willing to pay through the nose...? Remains to be seen.

This would have been well before Brady established himself as a starter so doesn't make a whole lot of sense, do you have a link that indicates they preferred him over Harris?

I know, I'm simply emphasizing my point at how little I'm interested in Betts. Even at the same money, give me Jeffcoat.

But we're already out on Jeffcoat at whatever his ask is, so I'm certainly not on board with giving more for Betts.

Where do you get the idea they're out on Jeffcoat?  Walters clearly stated he wants him back, he'll go to FA find out his market price and negotiate with the Bombers to see if they can come to an agreement.  I don't see a lot of teams being interested in a fairly expensive part-time solution unless they already have a matching piece that also can't play a full season like Lanier.

If we are matching pound for pound backup Canadian DT with other teams in the league, is Jake Thomas really the issue? I think there was some issue with the amount of reps he got last year. I can't imagine that he signed on this year to be the starter. But his passport and his ability to play at a veteran level is valuable.

The way I look at it is Lawson is going to be the Canadian on the line and we will get good value from Thomas. We could be looking at bringing kongbo back to rotate which may leave Thomas as the third.

Im all for moving on from Americans because the pool of talent to replace them is vast. Dumping Canadians who can still play...

Jake may have agreed to a chance to compete contract and that's it, seems to be a lot of variables that could influence how they structure the D-line this season. Can't see him sticking around if they plop him on the PR, he obviously still wants to play football.

More critical if they lose Jeffcoat and Walker, they'll have some major holes to fill and not a lot of spare cash to do it with, if they go all out and sign Schoen and Brady.

Walters has a mind of his own and they make these decisions in tandem. He had a good interview with Donavan Bennett a week or so ago and stated that he has final say over the roster and has and will use it. He listens to the coaching staffs opinions and then goes from there and decides how they fit into his SMS or if they will fit into his SMS. He said that the coaches trust the scouting pipeline and if a deal can't be worked out with a player the coaches would like to have that they trust the process of how he decides on that.

One critical part of that interview you didn't mention was how they balance the culture of the dressing room between character and talent.  Walters provides a great explanation of how O'Shea is more in on the character of players and the scouts are all in on talent, with himself leaning to the side of character.  This could explain why a highly disciplined navy seal became an important part of the team and the retention of a vet like Jake Thomas was more than likely.

Even as a depth signing this just feels dumb to me, shouldn't our depth be young guys learning with upside. Full of P&V, going out and running over people when they get on the field? We need to build for the future, not hang on to the past. Do Walters and O'Shea have that little faith in their scouts and the players they have / will draft? Just mind boggling, I need to walk away...

If they didn't re-sign Jake we'd see a lot more of Schmekel this year, which may or may not be a problem.

Saskatchewan has four quarterbacks under contract as of now – Harris and Shea Patterson were already signed for 2024, and Antonio Pipkin and Fine signed extensions this off-season.

O’Day said the Roughriders are comfortable with those four arms at camp, but could bring in someone from their negotiation list.

Herein is why Oda'y sucks as a G.M and the Riders will be sucking in general...again...,,Or be a key reason for the continued suckage.... What a pitiful QB room.....fronted by an even more pitiful O-line

They've got rocks for brains over there, Harris gets knocked out before game 8 and they finish the season on an 8 game losing streak....for the 3rd straight year.

WR budget is much larger than the RB budget. You keep Schoen and go rookie/cheaper for the rest of the spots.

Agreed WR budget is bigger than the RB budget, but what is the limit?

    Lawler $285k

    Demski $180k

    Bailey $120k?

    Woli $120k?

    Schoen $250k?

Looking at $1 million for 5 players in that positional group and there are at least 2 backups, all within a $5,450,000 salary cap.

I predict Schoen receives an offer the Bombers can't match and they bump Bailey to $140k to reward him for his hard work and sticking with the team.  Slot in rookie contract Ontaria Wilson in Schoen's absence.

They don't...Walters will go on record and say "this is what we could afford as to now disrupt the roster esewhere"....and say "this is what BO wanted"....and thats that

I think he pulled in 205k ONE YR.....But not that 235k NUMBER

Who knows, he might have included his award bonuses and playoff total in that number, but I wouldn't be surprised if he earned that much in one year plus extra outside endorsements.  All of which are things Brady should take into account.

Curious if they go after Schoen...Whitehead is likely out...Hatcher prob wont be back till very late into season....they Punted Rhymes...I bet they are the ones we be seeing big money from....they did it before with Lucky...also Lawler but he spurned them

Neil McEvoy said recently they are not planning to be a big player in FA, much like the Bombers and Argos, re-signing their own players is their top priority  Lucky might not have that many options, he'll probably sign with them for less money, he's "lucky" to still be making more money than Bailey, who beat him out in Wpg. and is a more valuable contributor.

They won't care about optics one bit.

Their goal is to field a competitive team and a team that is capable of making a run when we host the Grey Cup.   They aren't about to cripple our roster by having so much cap space tied up in an expendable position.

I think Wade might disagree with your viewpoint, his goal is to fill the stadium and sell merchandise, and to that end having a couple of local stars certainly helps.

If he wants $200 I’d let him walk - let alone $250 to $300.

Don't know if this is true or not but heard on the Ray and Benny Podcast that Andrew Harris made $235k at his peak, which would have been around 2019.  Could be these are the numbers Brady is basing his ask on.  Also Milt advising Brady to stay in Wpg. to take advantage of the outside football earnings that will be much more lucrative than any money he can make elsewhere.

My only issue with Lawson, is he didn’t play enough. Guys a monster.
For the cap numbers the only thing I’d add is that it’s heavily skewed for us when you factor in Zach, and even what will likely be our top 5 all earning outlier money.
Let’s say Zach 600k, and the next 4 (likely wj lawler Bryant and one of schoen/brady) average 225k. That’s 1.5m/5.585m at just 5 guys. Leaving 40 to split 4.085m, if we leave no cushion and rely on cutting guys to make changes or ir saved money. That’s 102,125 now, vs the minimum of 70k. If you break down the next 5 highest paid guys, and average out the rest over 35 it drops to probably the mid to low 90s. If you then pay your 7 starting candians plus 3 key ni back ups an average of 100k, which would likely be closer to 125k in average, the number slumps even further.

Lawson was taking more snaps than Jake by the end of the season, they only had 3 DT's in rotation so they all got plenty of reps.

Mike Miller was making 95 k last year, moving on from Jeffcoat saves us between 165-185, Winston Rose/Brandon Alexander are both around 100 grand each. Lots of money freed up. I think the Bombers were happy with a lot of their young guys stepping up in the secondary so that’s a lot of money for those four guys alone. Plus some of the restructuring from guys like Demski, etc there should be plenty of money available.

Can't forget about Evan Holm, more than likely we see him back at some point.

The issue isn’t “can we afford Brady”, the issue is “is it worth paying Brady”

People are all up in arms about the Kolonscopy contract, but Demski just lowered his cap hit, we’re moving on from Jeffcoat, we’re moving on from a LOT of our special teams guys who were on their second/third deals making bigger money. We’ve got lots of money to spend.

If Schoen reaches FA, that won't be the case, he's going to receive a lot higher offers than Brady, and some other team is likely to offer him half the moon, forcing Walters to concede.

I don’t think it’s the contract amount that is at issue, he was the least needed of our OL free agents. Eli is already on the roster and better at centre. With Bryant, Gray/Dobson, Eli, Neufeld and Hardrick/Richmond we have the best O-Line on the league and have better protection for Zach than we had before. That $50 or 60k over a rookie developmental is needed for other players.

They play 6 O-line fronts a lot more than they did 2 years ago, 6th guy is getting plenty of game reps, 7th guy is now the spare.   I think they have Kornelson and Adamson coming back from last year.  Yoshi maxed out last season at $166k and was nominated top O-lineman in the West, can't see him ever wanting to leave the Bombers willingly for more money, he's so ingrained in the team and the community.
