Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed three players including WR Keric Wheatfall

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed wide receivers Keric Wheatfall and Braxton Burmeister, and kicker Jose Borregales on Monday.

Keric Wheatfall is six foot two and weighs 194 pounds. The 24-year-old from Cypress, Texas, signed with the Philadelphia Stars (USFL) in 2023 but spent the season on injured reserve. Before Philadelphia, Wheatfall attended the Philadelphia Eagles training camp in 2022.

Collegiately, Wheatfall played two seasons at Blinn College (2017-18) with 72 catches for 1,173 yards, seven touchdowns, and seven kick returns for 112 yards in 20 games for the Buccaneers. Then, Wheatfall transferred to Fresno State (2019, 2021) with 55 catches for 923 yards, five touchdowns, two carries for two yards, and one kick return for 35 yards in 23 games for the Bulldogs.

Braxton Burmeister is six foot one and weighs 205 pounds. The 25-year-old from La Jolla, California, made two catches for 15 yards in three preseason games for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. The Rams signed Burmeister as an undrafted free agent in 2023.

Collegiately, Burmeister was a quarterback in college. He played two seasons at Oregon (2017-18) completing 49 of 87 passes (56%) for 373 yards, two touchdowns, six interceptions, 71 carries for 131 yards, and three touchdowns in 11 games for the Ducks.

Next, Burmeister transferred to Virginia Tech (2020-21) completing 190 of 339 passes (56%) for 2,647 yards, 16 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 163 carries for 703 yards, four touchdowns, one catch for three yards, and one touchdown in 18 games for the Hokies.

Then, Burmeister transferred to San Diego State in 2022 completing 34 of 64 passes (53%) for 230 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, 29 carries for 144 yards, one touchdown, and one catch for 19 yards in eight games for the Aztecs.

Jose Borregales is five foot ten and weighs 206 pounds. The 26-year-old from Caracas, Venezuela, converted six of nine field goals (67%) with a long of 52 yards in ten games for the Orlando Guardians (XFL) in 2023.

The Guardians drafted Borregales in the first round (5th pick) of Phase 5 of the 2023 XFL Draft. Before Orlando, Borregales signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2021.

Collegiately, Borregales played four seasons at Florida International University (2016-19) making 50 of 66 field goals (75.8%) with a long of 53 yards, making 131 of 134 extra points, 78 kickoffs for 4,695 yards (60.2 AVG), and 40 touchbacks in 39 games for the Panthers. Apart from perhaps the kicker, they sound like training camp bodies.

Now that we are being rewarded for it, playing 8 Canadians at times and relying less on the new Nationalized import rules seems like less of a failure to utilize the roster and more of a strategy to lock down a bonus draft pick. Great incentive to play Nationals even when you have Nationalized imports with snaps to spare

What if the salaries of any starting NI over and above the minimum wouldn't count under the salary cap?

Brady may learn that there isn’t as much money to be out there as he thinks. RB isn’t much different here compared to the NFL with regards to how replaceable they are. Wearing a Winnipeg jersey has just as much value to Brady as it does to the Bombers and I’m sure his agent will remind him of that.

All his charitable causes get a big boost in awareness and visibility because he’s in town.

Oliviera being a local works both ways. Do not underestimate the value of being home and the comfort of familiarity  and lower cost of living, not to mention the presence of family and old friends. Money isn't everything, not to mention having an o-line capable of protecting him and extending his playing career and post-CFL body health.

That's more than I'd like to pay, but I believe that the WFC is willing to go there. It makes sense.

I also believe that Brady is probably using the 250 number to try and pull us towards and over the 200 line. But that is just too much and would just hurt the team more than it would help us.

Agreed. Every decision is a compromise.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ receiver Kenny Lawler has restructured his contract for the 2024 season, per league sources.

The six-foot-two, 199-pound target received a $150,000 signing bonus to ink his new deal, which includes $115,000 in base salary, a $13,800 housing bonus, and a $7,200 travel bonus. In total, Lawler will earn $285,000 in hard money this year.

The 29-year-old was originally slated to earn $310,000 in 2024, though he’s expected to net more on his new deal as signing bonuses are taxed at a lower rate for American players. He had a $125,000 off-season roster bonus due on Monday, Jan. 15, which led to his deal being renegotiated.

Also signing Strev essentially means no Prukop and probably a rook at QB3

Streveler straight up for Dru Brown and Prukop? Upgrade in my books.

As much as I like Strev... but between the under arm odour, beer stains & smell of puke, I'll pass on that fur coat.

Does it bring back too many bad memories?

  7. I am not going to get worked up over the Oliviera/ Shoen opera until the dust settles. Walters has shown himself to be very good in finding and trading for talent and juggling the books. He has my trust and what will happen will happen. Some things just pop up with no forewarning, so life is what happens to you while you are making plans. Sempre avanti!
