I completely disagree with you. 
 
I think the fact that there is a 5-page discussion on a players sexual orientation and not a single post saying or even implying "keep that ***** away from my team" is pretty fricken awesome. 
 
SEC defensive player of the year? Yeah, dude can clearly play football too. 

No other group in society is in the driver's seat in virtually every context. 
 
Problem is, we only "see" it in when we (meaning white men) are seemingly getting the shaft -- like when a job posting says "preference given to minorities blah blah blah."
 
That's when we notice it. Not the thousands of other contexts where being a white male in N America is actually, well, a pretty sweet deal. 

No other group in society is in the driver's seat in virtually every context.

It should be mandatory that you try to break it and if you can't, you forfeit it to the other team.

No one has to "support a gay lifstyle"- all people have to do is treat them the same as everyone else with the same rights and priviledges. Sexuality is not a digital either "perfectly straight" or "totally gay" choice. Sexuality is an analog thing along a sliding scale and homosexuality exists in the animal kingdom as well. The problem is that some politicians and religious leaders curry favour with neanderthals by bashing gays while indulging in questionable sexual practices themselves in secret.

Not sure if Cortez and Lapo would be a good tandem. I think BC will go either Lapo OR Cortez.

First they take away our right to violate syntax for dramatic emphasis and effect.
 
Then they take our guns.
 
Then they take our freedom.

The difference is, being gay is inclusive. Every race has gay people. Even the bigots are slowly acknowledging this. 
 
Race, because its us vs. them, will always be divisive to some small minded people. Especially during economic downturns when scapegoats are required. 

No you can't make that leap in any reliable manner. So your point re: stats is correct. 
 
But the thing is, sexual orientation is different then race. You don't have a lot of black people in the NHL because there aren't a lot of black people tuned into it or growing up playing it. Or blacks playing lacrosse. 
 
Sexual orientation though is different. If you have a pulse, you could be gay. That's why the barriers are going to go down so fast. 

To be fair, even if 10% of the population is gay -- which I would argue is far closer to reality than 3-5%, as so many men (and women) that are gay force themselves to live and "report" as straight -- I do think 4 per football squad would be exaggerated, especially at the pro level.

But percentage of gays in something less stigmatized like swimming or track or tennis? Sure, 10%.
