    Our overheating world is likely to break a key temperature limit for the first time over the next few years, scientists predict.

    Researchers say there's now a 66% chance we will pass the 1.5C global warming threshold between now and 2027.

    The chances are rising due to emissions from human activities and a change in weather patterns expected this summer.

    If the world passes the limit, scientists stress the breach, while worrying, will likely be temporary.

    Hitting the threshold would mean the world is 1.5C warmer than it was during the second half of the 19th Century, before fossil fuel emissions from industrialisation really began to ramp up.

    And breaking the limit even for just one year is a worrying sign that warming is accelerating and not slowing down.

    The 1.5C figure has become a symbol of global climate change negotiations. Countries agreed to "pursue efforts" to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C under the 2015 Paris agreement.

    Going over 1.5C every year for a decade or two would see far greater impacts of warming, such as longer heatwaves, more intense storms and wildfires.

    Change in global temperature compared to the pre-industrial average. Temperatures were around average until about 1950, but have increased since, regularly exceeding 1C of warming in the last decade.

    The Alberta NDP is calling for the resignation of a UCP candidate after it released an audio recording from last fall where she is heard making transphobic comments.

    Lacombe-Ponoka candidate Jennifer Johnson was speaking at a forum last September about the public school system versus homeschooling.

    In the recording, Johnson can be heard saying Alberta’s high test scores don’t matter because some students are transgender.

    “It does not matter that we’re in the top three per cent of the world. Who cares if they got 89 per cent in Chemistry 30? Who cares that they’re entering post-secondary — if they’re chemically castrated?” she said in the recording.

    Johnson went on to compare a handful of transgender students in the school system to mixing a teaspoon of feces into a batch of baked goods.

     

    “‘Enjoy (the cookies), I only put a teaspoon of poop in them, but it doesn’t matter because it’s only a teaspoon in the whole batch,'” she is heard saying.

    “Same idea — we can be top three per cent, but that little bit of poop is what wrecks it.”

    The UCP released a statement on Johnson’s behalf, in which she said the comments were based on what she saw parents experiencing in the U.S., and that Alberta is “quite different.”

    Ghastly humans in that political party.

    Let the people decide. Last November, Tempe City Council voted 7-0 to conduct a special election referendum on May 16 to allow citizens to decide on the viability of a $2.1 billion Tempe Entertainment District.

    The Tempe Entertainment District is slated to include a palatial new, 16,000-seat arena, along with a 3,000-seat music venue, a 1,900-unit residential complex and luxury retail shops, restaurants and hotels.

    The plan calls for 46 acres bordering the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which is currently hazardous wasteland, to be developed. Specifically, voters are being asked to vote YES or NO on three questions:

    Proposition 301: Amends the city’s general plan for use of the property.
    Proposition 302: Permission to rezone the property.
    Proposition 303: Provides the Arizona Coyotes the right to develop the 46-acre site for a new arena, an entertainment district, two boutique-style hotels and nearly 2,000 residential units.

    Nothing random about SLC. There's a venue - Vivint Arena - that can support hockey (IIRC, a pre-season NHL game between LAK and VGK was held there the season before last), there's a history of hockey there (similar to Seattle), and there's a population of nearly 2M people.

    It makes sense to keep the franchise in the west should Phoenix no longer be viable (was it ever?). By relocating to either SLC or Houston, the divisions (and conferences) will remain unchanged.

    “They’re embracing us in the community and we want to be a part of the community,” he said. “As an American, I’m thankful to be in the CFL. It’s my first year with the Als, so I want to do everything I can to immerse myself amongst this community even if I sound like a rookie with French, but I’m trying to learn it and trying to grow.”

    As good a reason as any to learn a language. Respect.

    What exactly was offensive about his post? @Fatty Liver made a salient point: if you don't know who you're voting for, what good is it to vote?

    I'm all for exercising one's democratic right and casting a ballot in an election, but it does nobody an iota of good if a voter casts a ballot while being uninformed of the platform/ideas of the candidate or party he selects.

    The WestJet Group says it will lock out the airline's pilots after their union sent a 72-hour strike notice to the company and government Monday night, setting the stage for a work stoppage right before the May long weekend.

    The airline says it's begun preparations to operate a reduced schedule, manage changes and cancellations and provide flexible change and cancel options for those people who want to change their plans.

    Impacted guests would be refunded or re-accommodated as applicable, WestJet said.

    The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) represents both WestJet and Swoop pilots, and the lockout notice applies to Swoop pilots as well.

    The WestJet Group said a work stoppage could occur as early as Friday at 3 a.m. MT.  In a release, WestJet said that issuing a lockout notice does not mean a work stoppage will occur.

    About 1,850 WestJet pilots with the union are poised to strike. Some of the issues they say still need to be resolved include pay, job security and scheduling.

    Same goes for the Federal Cons and the American Republicans.  This s**t is getting existential.

    John Kenneth Galbraith hit the nail on the head back in the early 60s, IMO. ****'s only festered since that time.

    The Bombers had the most overall TDs (63), the most TDs on offense (58), and the most passing TDs (44). The Stampeders had the most rushing TDs (24).

    Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has not been seen in public since Tuesday, did not appear on Sunday at a ceremony in the capital, Minsk, triggering speculation that the veteran leader is seriously ill.

    The BelTA state news agency reported that Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko read a message from Lukashenko during an annual ceremony at which young people swear allegiance to the ex-Soviet state's flag.

    The agency gave no reason for Lukashenko's absence five days after he appeared unwell and skipped parts of commemorations in Moscow marking the Soviet Union's Second World War victory over Germany.

     

    Lukashenko also did not speak at an event in Minsk marking the anniversary for the first time in his long presidency. That event was the last time he was seen in public.

    Lukashenko's office has declined to comment.

    According to the opposition news outlet Euroradio, Lukashenko was taken to an elite Minsk clinic on Saturday.

    Lukashenko, 68, has led Belarus since 1994, using police to put down protests, while courts closed dissident media outlets and imposed long jail terms on opponents, and activists fled the country en masse.

    Lukashenko received backing from Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in squashing protests, and last year he allowed his country's territory to be used as part of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
