Why would we want Swayze Waters?  First he's an import kicker.  Second, he hit 72% of his FG's last year, 74% in 2012, and he plays in a dome for half his games.  Third, we just re-signed Mike Renaud to handle punting duties.  Fourth we have Liri Hirahaluah who I am sure can hit at least 72% of his FGs.

Not saying it won't happen, but I would find it very, very puzzling.

He's a great punter.

Wouldn't count on an undrafted CIS kicker who has never teed one up in the CFL to be anything.

If Ferri is at least as good as Dunn and Wild, I don't see the harm in signing him and bringing him to training camp to compete for a spot on the team.  Shouldn't cost too much.

FWIW, somebody told me this morning that they expected three definite signings by Winnipeg tomorrow. One of them was Diamond Ferri.

I didn't get it at the time, because he wasn't scheduled to be an FA.

when you said tomorrow, do you mean before the free agency ? or when the free agency kicks in?

I have no idea. Just casual conversation with one of my friends, I didn't really get into details.

have heard Kohlert and Swayze Waters, fwiw...

Would be very happy to see Waters here. Feels like it's been forever since we've had security at placekicker, and with O'Shea's ties to Waters, this one makes some sense.

O'Shea's ties to Waters?

You can't get any closer to Waters than Walters is.

Much rather we bring in Congi and Liri to camp as our kickers.

I'd rather bring Palardy back than Congi.  Yuck.  Same problems, "accurate" kickers with no leg.  If they aren't hitting 90% inside 40, they are killing you with lousy kickoffs and lack of range.

Biggest pet peeve I have with kickers. If they can't provide reasonable consistent kick-off distant, then no thanks.

I wondered if Swayze Waters might follow O'Shea.  The punter is the most important member of special teams in my estimation and Swayze is a good one.  Does screw with the ratio though...

I hate the idea of losing a DI spot to a kicker.

yea, i hope there isn't any substance to this as i really don't think he's worth the spot.. Hes no medlock. Id rather let the young guys battle it out and maybe palardy lol

Waters has never impressed me. To waste a DI spot on a punter, not for that at all.

Considering O'Shea would have worked quite closely with Waters, if O'Shea wants to sign him I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

If we can get Swayze at the right price, I'd be okay with it. But if we could get him for a steal, if Walters could just walk all over him in negotiations, he would be like a Jesus to me.

Wiecek and a few others tweeting the Bombers have contacted Ferri.

;)

@PaulWiecek: The Bombers have expressed interest in former Riders LB Diamond Ferri. #bn

Not the greatest situation but the Riders got a Grey Cup with an import punter so it is certainly viable.

Hard to see where Ferri fits on our team, even without knowing what we have in the young imports we've signed.  We're covered at WIL, Banks is probably going to play SAM or some hybrid position that takes that spot, Ferri is no better at HB than the DB's we've already got.

Defensive tackle.

He'll lose that competition to Cauchy based on passport alone.

No.. Nonononono.. Plz god no.

No ferri.. Please walters, hear my prayers!

Still waiting for an answer at MLB.  I don't know if Ferri was the answer, but who is?  Generally it's the "QB" of the defense, and we don't have an established starter there.

There's this thing called training camp to sort this kinda stuff out, ya kno?

Even if Ferri was signed we wouldn't have had an established starter at MLB, he's a WIL LB and spare DB.

My point is, MLB is pretty important in a defense.  I'm wondering if anybody here is familiar with some of the new guys we've signed enough to say that they have a shot at taking that spot, or if we need to be looking at free agent or trade possibilities. Or, maybe I'm out to lunch about how CFL-ready a middle linebacker needs to be.

MLB is one of the easier spots to fill on a roster.
