Shouldn't health orders also ban all unhealthy foods since heart disease is the 2nd leading cause of deaths?    Shouldn't cigarettes be completely removed since it results in cancer and unhealthy bodies?   Alchoal is a luxury and not a necessity,  people are killed from drunk drivers shoudln't that be completely abolished?

We can save many lives by making simple changes but will society accept these changes that I mention above?

I can't foresee the future and or make any sweeping changes but I will guess based on my own opinions that if they ever consider another full blown lockdown that society will simply riot and not accept it.   People in the last few years followed orders out of fear of the unknown,   I don't think tweets like the one above will have very much if any effect on anyone these days into scaring them into going back into hiding from COVID.     It's not 2021 anymore,  people know better and simply will accept that it's a part of now modern day life and will go back to attending school,  going to Bomber games,  going to restaurants and living life to the fullest.

So once again where am I wrong in what I said in my original post?   Am I just really out of touch in saying that people are going out unmasked and living life similar to pre pandemic times?

Time to live with it or cower in fear every time someone gets the sniffles.  The sick die all the time, I'm not being callous, it's just truth.  If you're at-risk of anything, you protect yourself when you can.  I have a type-1 diabetic friend, he's a higher risk than your average person, plus he has lung issues, doesn't stop him from living and doesn't live behind a mask.  "Get busy living or get busy dying."

Um, smoking is definitely banned in public where you can make others sick.

Your last line was addressed in my previous comment.

Can you legally purchase cigarettes?   How does smoking in private prevents cancer more then smoking in public?        Wouldn't less people have lung cancer if they were not able to smoke cigarettes anywhere?      The point is that a simple thing like cigarettes could be outlawed but the Gov't will not do this because people would flip out.

If they were to do another lockdown and mask mandate... I think people will riot based on the fact that the vast majority of the public have moved on and are no longer living in fear and accept that COVID is just a part of life.

I just can't see any provincial governments forcing any restrictions anymore. I think that ship has sailed. The only way that'll happen is if the healthcare system is overrun which could happen. Most people seem to catch Covid & it's gone in a few days. Brandon is right. People are acting like it's 2018 & not 2022. Myself? I've had 4 shots, the most recent June 20th. When I qualify, I'll get a 5th. I no longer mask. What's the point of masking anymore, anyway? If no one else does.

For self-protection and the protection of vulnerable people that you share your life with, for two things.

I understand. Thing is, how many fans at Saturday's football game will be masked. A few hundred? Maybe?? Go to a mall, a grocery store or restaurant. In public no one masks anymore. My attitude is whatever. I 've done all I can. I follow the rules. I vaccinated 4 times. But if 99.999% of people don't mask, my wearing a mask means nothing. I just gave up.

I will continue to wear a mask when indoors in public places. We all choose for ourselves.

You wearing a mask protects you from the people who are sick (with anything ie. cold, flu, covid, etc.), or protects others if you happen to be sick.  It's common in other parts of the world for people who are or have been sick to wear a mask as a courtesy to others and I think it would be nice if people here did the same.  Nothing political or anything about that, just courtesy for others.  Is a mask 100% effective, no, but neither are condoms or birth control yet people continue to use them.

To the comment that someone made about it restricting air flow... sure, a little, but if you have a proper fitting mask with some structure to it so that it doesn't get sucked into your mouth when you breath, it's not a problem to wear for the better part of a day.  I've done workouts and played sports with a mask on with little to no effect on my performance, so the air flow couldn't have been restricted all that much.

My wife & I went to see Steve Earle & The Dukes up in Edmonton at the River Cree Casino & Resort on the First Nations Reserve. Huge complex with a hotel, casino, four or 5 restaurants & an entertainment venue where the Dukes played. Probably 3,000 people there easily as it was packed. I was concerned about Covid at the time but I never got sick. No one was wearing a mask. We had dinner at one of the restaurants before the show. No one wore a mask. Went to the casino after the show & no one wore a mask.

We can talk about protecting each other & it sounds so noble. Thing of it is, if no one cares enough to wear a mask to protect me then I sure as hell ain't wearing a mask to protect anyone else. I'll continue to get my vaccinations. I'll follow whatever rules an establishment has in regards to masking. If I have to mask up, I will with no complaints. But my days of voluntarily wearing a mask in public are over. I think governments will be loathe to bring back restrictions. In other words, if people want to wear masks they will be free to do so. If people don't want to then they won't have to. We're moving into another phase of the pandemic & how it'll be handled.

I agree with what you are saying. I think, unless we see a massive wave over running the health care system, that mass restrictions and masking are at an end. If everyone was masking, I would too, but if no one is masking I don't see the point. I will stay home and limit my activities when sick and continue the religious hand washing when out in public and carry my hand sanitizer but I don't see the point in masking anymore.

In my mind, the bolded part is the big issue with society in general... rather than saying that we will all look out for each other, it's every man for themselves.  If everyone would take a step back and say, I'm going to do this to help others (and I'm not just talking about masks here), then people could and would be happier and the world would be a better place.  The selfish attitude of "I'm only going to look out for myself because nobody else will" is why there's so much hate out there.

I know of several people (myself included) who were vaccinated, extremely cautious and always wore a mask and stayed at home only to still get COVID.    It's deflating when you get you try to do good and no matter what you still end up getting sick.   I think many others were in the same boat and simply tossed in the towel and said "F*** it".

On an unrelated note it's mandated to wear a mask in hospitals and clinics.  I was in Manitoba Clinic with my little one last week and most definitely wore a mask as did everyone else.... with exception of the door dash driver and when he came in to use the elevators the staff asked him if he had a mask and he said no.  They said thats ok go on in... even though the entrances have disposable masks for the public.   When medical facilities don't care anymore then it's awfully hard for the general public to care anymore.

which is entirely the wrong attitude. Anyone with half a brain would look at that and go "wow, this is a really strong virus to get through all those layers of protection, and imagine how much sicker I could have been WITHOUT those layers of protection??"

Yet somehow here in Alberta the leading cause of death is now "unknown", 3,362 compared to 1,950 for covid.  It gets very little press, but is a worrisome number.  It has now beat out dementia, which has lead the list since 2016. They have no idea why people are dying for unknown reasons at a climbing rate, could be a number of factors.

Covid is just something we have to live with.  My two month old had it, didn't worry me for a second, he was sick for two days.  My other two had it as well, better in 2-3 days.  Kids are super resilient and the idea of shooting them full of covid shots is abhorrent to me.

Alberta sees spike in deaths with unknown causes in 2021 | CTV News

As it should be, all they do is restrict your airflow.  Probably 1% of people are wearing them out here.  How many are wearing them in Winnipeg?

  • Anyone who trusts Covid stats from the Alberta government is a fool.
  • We are still trying to figure out the effects of COVID, but long-COVID is a thing and we don't know if there will be effective treatments in our lifetime.
  • New studies are showing that multiple COVID infections lead to increased mortality.
  • Children are dying from COVID.  They aren't all super-resilient.  527 kids aged 0-4 have died of COVID in the U.S.  Given that repeated infections are more likely to cause severe outcomes, it's dangerous to think that kids will be as similarly "resilient" as you think they are.
  • Vaccinations have saved many, many lives up til now and the bivalent version against Omicron shows great promise.
  • Kids get vaccinations against all kinds of abhorrent illnesses and diseases.  The vaccines themselves are not abhorrent.
  • Masks don't restrict your airflow in any meaningful way.

Nor do I. At all CFL games, I see virtually no one masking. Go to a mall. Where's the masking? Restaurants? No one masking. People can still mask if they want to.

The ignorance is astounding.

Well, how do you explain the fact 99.9% of people don't mask up? I don't think they go out everyday wanting to hurt kids. I'm going for physiotherapy on my shoulder. The clinic is in a recreational complex that has two arenas. Before school started, lots of little kids running around while their older brothers & sisters also under 12 were going to hockey clinics or practice. Employees weren't masking. Coaches weren't masking. Parents weren't masking. Nor were others in that complex. No one wore a mask. It is what it is.

The old "everyone else is doing it argument" in reverse.  During a pandemic of an air-borne virus.

Meanwhile 10.5 million children have lost a parent or caregiver to COVID.

I can't explain the choices others make. I can only look at the science and know that I will do everything I can to protect my children, including getting them vaccines when they become available. To choose not to because others don't would not make me a responsible adult. Endangering my children because a bunch of anti-science mouth-breathers don't believe in vaccines would never cross my mind.

Do you mask everywhere constantly?

Do you mask constantly in public to protect other kids? By constantly, I mean everywhere. When you are out in public?

When I am in an enclosed space, I certainly do, I have to mask up for work each day.

I don't need to outdoors because the science says that the risk, in a open air environment, is miniscule.

I just looked at how ridiculous it was to continue masking when others stopped. I held in there masking for a long time after most stopped. After awhile, science or not, it just seemed pointless. I think most people feel the same way so they stopped.

My mask is always on indoors in public spaces.  I've avoided crowded outdoor spaces since the mask mandate was lifted.
