I'm starting this thread as a side discussion of all things Corona Virus related. I understand that this is going to be discussed in almost all other topic threads but we could collect news and other items here. 

 

At work, many conferences have been cancelled.

NBA - Suspended.

NHL - About to be suspended. 

NCAA March Madness - Playing - no crowd. 

 

Political Rallies have been cancelled. 

Travel bans. 

 

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks tested positive. They're in Australia where testing is available. If they were in the US, they wouldn't have been tested.

Many have already had covid, or they believe that if they get it, there won't be a serious outcome for them - it's just a cold or flu. They don't actually care what the numbers are in their region.

I don't think they will face it. I have an acquatence who had Covid. Her daughter's got it. Their children got it. She ended up in Boundary Trails hospital. She got worse. She was airlifted to ICU in Brandon. But she got lucky , survived and got to come home. Now here is the shocking part. She denies she had Covid . She says she just had bad pneumonia. 

I think all the sweet talk, rationalization,  coercing, rules, shutdowns, sickness and death.........will never sway that core group in Stanley.

Stanley is the Colony region more so I believe so I can understand their unwillingness.. they are a somewhat segregated community. Good people but yup not gonna change their views. 

Winkler? I don't get that one... thought they were a bit smarter tho. Guess not.

I was kind of the same. I thought they had " grown up " since my youth when I worked in the area.  Apparently I was wrong.

Absolutely positively not. That community has a FAR more progressive reputation than actually exists there. They may be economically booming, but it is every bit as socially regressive as ever. They make sure the community maintains a similar mindset via immigration efforts which agree with long standing ideology. 

I'd be in favour of parts of a region being shut down but honestly its frustrating. I'll pick on those communities in south with low rates and point out that in Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus is asked the greatest commandment and after mentioning love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, he mentions the need to love your neighbour as yourself. To me, getting a vaccine that will help protect others, lower the possibility of transmission and lessen the strain on the healthcare system is loving your neighbour as yourself.

I’m with you on this for most issues. If you knew me personally you would know this to be true.
 

However for this societal issue that is killing droves of people, their livelihoods and the economy as a whole, the question for example is the catch more flies with honey working in areas like Stanley or Winkler? (See post above). I would suggest at this point we are at a core of people who just don’t care what honey we share with them. So what do you do? What you do is severely restrict their movement and hit them directly in their pocket books if they continue to not take this fda approved vaccine. I know, way easier said than done, so many complexities with this but we have to do something more assertive. The virus can’t move on its own so if you’re not going to take the vaccine which is showing extremely high positive results (see icu data for example) then your movements need to be severely restricted as a consequence of your freedom to choose not taking this fda approved vaccination. And when I’m using the word you I’m not talking about you specifically.

Yeah but a lot of Christians these days don't really care for that Jesus fellow. Too much of a socialist. They prefer the old testament angry vengeful God.

They're just going to rewrite it again. Instead of Jesus as a pacifist Jew, he'll have a sword and smite the wicked. Maybe just toss Jesus out altogether (sounds kind of Mexican, anyhow).

For those who do not already know, Adolph Hitler commissioned a new "Bible", which removed Jesus as the central figure and instead was to portray a master race- Aryans as a secret society who eventually chose to emerge as the true saviours of humanity and rulers by divine right. This book would justify genocide of inferior races and individuals who were subhuman and therefore inferior with no pretense of democracy. The theme was that power had to be exercised for the good of the ruled. This sure sounds like the mindset of the right-wing adherents everywhere. Some evangelists have even said publicly that democracy is incompatible with a "Christian" state. I have little confidence that America as we have come to know it, can survive.

Maybe no one is talking about it but...

Does it seem weird that we're not seeing more variants of concern emerging? I would like to think this is because the vaccinations are having a positive effect but I also see the overflowing hospitals in some jurisdictions tells me that we do not have this virus under control.

For what's it worth I remember reading a while back from an Infectious disease expert that her position was we shouldn't be worried about more variants spawning from COVID 19 and it will eventually be like the common cold. I didn't get into why she thinks this, I hope she's right but as said take this with a grain of salt as the saying goes.

- Permitting indoor public gathering group sizes to 25 people or 33 per cent capacity, whichever is greater, for gatherings that include unvaccinated people who are eligible to be vaccinated. (This will be interesting in the churches)

Love the new restrictions. I've been worried for a while that we would cave to anti-vaxxers. Glad there is some stuff specific to Southern Health that seems designed to not screw with those in the region who are vaccinated too much.

Not weird at all. Living biomes (like hooman beings) are essentially living Petrie dishes, and the more that are infected, the higher the chances that a mutation will occur. The corollary to this is that if there are pockets of high infections anywhere in the world and not just in the Manitoba Bible Belt, the chances of a new mutation are both higher as well as the likelihood of it spreading elsewhere. Provincial health officials announced 78 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths in Manitoba Friday.

There are 712 active cases in Manitoba, with 92 people in hospital, 19 of them in intensive care.

The five-day test positivity rate is three in Manitoba.

Of the new cases announced Friday, 20 are in the Winnipeg health region, 31 in Southern Health; eight in Interlake–Eastern; 11 in Prairie Mountain; and eight in Northern Health.

Of these, 61 are in individuals who were not fully vaccinated. This includes:
   eight new cases, with seven not fully vaccinated, in the Interlake-Eastern health region;
   eight new cases, with eight not fully vaccinated, in the Northern health region;
   11 new cases, with 11 not fully vaccinated, in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
   31 new cases, with 24 not fully vaccinated, in the Southern Health-Santé Sud health region; and
   20 new cases, with 11 not fully vaccinated, in the Winnipeg health region.

Today’s data also shows:
   712 active cases and 58,705 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19;
   92 Manitobans hospitalized with COVID-19 including 60 people with active COVID-19 as well as 32 people who are no longer infectious; 
   a total of 19 Manitoba patients receiving intensive care for COVID-19, including 14 people in intensive care units with active COVID-19 as well as five people who are no longer infectious    but continue to require critical care;
   3,209 laboratory tests were completed yesterday, bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February 2020 to 1,005,687 and
   the total number of deaths in people with COVID-19 is 1,211.

Anyone expecting the (literal) diehard anti-vaxxers to change their minds will be disappointed. They are so invested in their beliefs that contracting COVID or even dying is unlikely to move them. There are two kinds of donkeys- those you can lead with a carrot and those you must drive with a stick.

Public Health is getting tougher on the scofflaws:

Monstrosity Burger in Winnipeg, which has already been ordered to shut down its indoor dining, received four $5,000 fines. The anti-mask, anti-vaccine business advertised a "walk for freedom" on Saturday and encouraged patrons to pre-order food and eat on the boulevard outside of the strip mall that houses the restaurant.

Other businesses fined included Chaise Cafe and Lounge, two MORFIT Training Centre locations and Bong Traders Paraphernalia Co. In Winkler, Twisters, Del Rios and the Iceburg Drive-In restaurants were fined. In Steinbach, Retro Chique and a Great Canadian Oil Change location were fined.
