  • I wouldn't put him above Reilly or Mitchell but he's getting close.  Six games is a small sample size but he's been doing it for 20.  If he continues to play as well as he has over his last 20 games a

  • He's a Scrub tho on Riderfans....lol They won't admit it, but they would love to have him right now, and his leadership, fire and attitude would probably have them sitting at 4-2 right now

If the DB's are sitting down at the 10 yard mark to stop us from getting first downs, I'm giving receivers 15 yard routes, not 5 yard ones. Catch the ball and you've got a first so getting YAC isn't as important.

Would be an easy and boring game if it were that binary and simple.

Every team is running route combinations that have receivers at several distances and depths.  Comes down to the reads of the QB and the amount of time he has to get the ball out (which determines the amount of time there is for receivers to run/complete routes), both perceived from pre-snap reads and actual from what happens when the ball is in his hands.

  • Since 2015, only two quarterbacks have recorded 10+ game-winning drives while trailing or tied in the fourth quarter: Mike Reilly (12) and Matt Nichols (10). In the same span, Trevor Harris has eight and Bo Levi Mitchell seven.
  • So far this season, Reilly leads the league with four of these drives and Nichols is right behind him with three

Scrub Nichols with a bit more extended stats to say otherwise that he is becoming a top tier QB

Who leads in wins by two scores or more?

Kinda of a silly stat to use as a comparison.  If you win every game 50-0 you're at zero, but it looks bad.

If he's a scrub I'll happily take what the scrub is doing with this team.  He's been our best qb since KJ. Another scrub from BC.

Yeah I only used Scrub as that's what posters on Ridefans refer to  him as lol ....not my opinion

Rider fans finally dominate a game since 2013 & they all come out of the woodwork. Back to reality this weekend. What an annoying fanbase.

No...it's a stat about QB's when trailing and or tied in the fourth...not necessarily about how many butt whoopings someone orchestrated...It just shows that in the clutch..these guys produce the most

TJ Thorpe has been a 1st Down machine many of these he was short of the sticks and converted.

With our offense we certainly need that.

Yes, but if you lose every close game on the last play you're also at zero. It's nice to know we have a QB that get it done when it comes down to it. 50-0 and 41-40 count the same in the W column,

But speedy, that is our offence.  Every team may fall short on second down. That's a given. It's how you respond on second down. The Bombers are proving that they are getting adept at converting those. As long as we have momentum on those short throws, we have as good a chance as any to convert. We don't necessarily have 1 go to guy for this..we have several. That's a good thing.

Does anyone have our second down conversion rate, especially inside the 35 yard line? It would be interesting to see what the percentage is & then compare it to other CFL teams.

Unfortunately we have to wait another week as they're on the bye....

Bombers are 52.1% on second down.  3rd in the league behind Edmonton and Montreal.  League average is 48.9%.  Bombers are far above league average on 2nd and 6 or less, a bit below league average on 2nd and 7 or more (31.1% to league average 37.6%).

4th in the league at redzone conversion to TD at 62.5%, league average is 58%, behind BC, Ottawa and Sask.

Our D is 5th on 2nd down but above league average, 48.1% for Bombers.

Better than Calgary in all these areas btw which is kind of odd IMO.

They are 3rd in the league at 52.1%. Edmonton is 1st with 54.4 Montreal second with 53.1.

Also interesting, Nichols completion percentage on 20+ yard throws is 34.1%, league average is 42.8%, only Collaros is worse thus far.

That would back up the eye test, Nichols has been erratic on the longer tosses, if he was hitting those at the league average pace this team would be down right scary.

Nichols best numbers relative to league averages are on 9-19 yard throws.

Also Jeffcoat is 5th in the league in QB pressures, Walker tied for 3rd in pass knockdowns.

Edited by JuranBoldenRules

If we could ever find a way to lock down Jeffcoat, Walker and Thorpe to (relatively, per CFL standards) long-term deals, that'd be a huge coups...

Where are these stats ????

All I know is that receivers have been taught to always get to the first down marker when the pass is short. Especially if we need 10 yards. Critical if under ten. Guys like Marquay McDaniel, Duke Williams,  Vidal Hazelton, Manny Arceneaux, Brian Burnam, SJ Green, Brandon Zylstra & Weston Dressler can make YAC yards but most of our receivers don't seem to be able to do that. Darvin Adams can create space running his routes  but he isn't the kind of physical  receiver who can fight for extra yards like the other guys can. I haven't seen enough of Lankford & Thorpe to make a real good assessment as they are rookies but they look promising for sure to be the physical receivers we need.

Adams can definitely fight for extra yards, who have you been watching????

The CFL publishes a report every week, google CFL team stats.  It's hard to find navigating their website, best viewed PDF.

Nichols ham and egger numbers is the reason the comebacks were necessary. How many times has he blown someone out?  Dig that stat up.  Elite?  Nope

How many times has Glenn? Overrated & plays scared when the going gets tough.  Chokes when the stakes are high? Can't win a championship after 17 seasons. Dig that stat up. Yup.
