How do you figure this was intended to "let LaPo off the hook?".   I don't believe that any one person is to blame for TEAM play.  I was simply stating that in that game, Nichols was awful and seemed shell shocked the entire game, not being able to find anyone down field, or make any accurate throws. The numbers support this.  To place square blame on LaPo for stalling out drives one after another... I'm sorry, but LaPo isn't behind centre.  If the Stamps were taking away Harris, there are typically 5 other capable players out there ready to make a play, and if the QB can't find any of them and make a throw, that's not on the OC.   If he's calling bad plays, that's one thing, but to routinely not be able to find anyone open, or run an audible to make a play happen, at some point the QB has to have some accountability, which you guys don't seen to want to pin any of on him!

I wouldn't go that far. There's room for improvement and the players and coaches have acknowledged that. But major issues is overstating it.
And it helps when the team has a lead going into the final frame. It isn't common for offenses to continue airing out the ball when leading the game, anyway. The ground game becomes more crucial when it's time to start chewing up the clock and close out a game. This is especially common with how LaPolice runs his offense.

Perhaps attributed to RP2 (Run pass punt), a staple of how Lapolice likes to call things, and one poster who I haven't seen in a while here named DR CFL has pointed this out before.
I've noticed the play selection is often run on first down, then call a short pass short of the sticks and hence 2 and out.  This has been a play selection pattern that has followed Lapo around not only with Nichols out there but Strev too.  It was done back in 2011 and before that in 2002-2003 as 17to85 points out.  The players don't always execute which is on them, but this conservative nature has always been Lapo

I don't buy into the theory that Nichols was inaccurate on long throws historically, but I do buy into the theory that he has been on the dime this season. That's all that really matters.
Saying he sucked in the past is like trying to say a lottery winner doesn't have money because they used to be poor. It's an invalid argument. If and when he starts missing deep shots then that argument can resume. Right now he has put that knock on his game to bed.
Also, Lapolice called a poor game in the WF last year but it was compounded by some inaccurate throws to receivers and RBs that would have resulted in walk in TDs. Both Nichols and Streveler missed easy home run shots to wide open guys behind coverage in that game.

Well, on to the next one and the Rod Blacks errr Redblacks face us part two.
I was right that Jonathon Jennings would be seeing the field soon if Davis didn't pick his game up, but ... Wow even sooner than I thought.
Throw Long Bananatyne was just bringing up some of Jennings's past games in the other thread in which he did well against us, but I figured in dissecting the game as a whole things have greatly changed since the 2016 and 2017 years.  Last time he came here early last year he was atrocious, and our defense has only gotten better since.
My take ... We've been jumping out to early leads here just about every week, if we continue that trend I suspect we'll be in control for most of the time once more.  Just gonna need to use a little more unpredictable stuff in the 2nd half and maybe use the Streveler package some more - talking to you Lapolice.

I suspect Winston Rose, the underrated CB who I will go so far as to say is better than Tre Roberson will come down with a couple more picks on Friday.  I would bet Hardrick will be fine, Bighill back, but what about Jeff Hecht? Derek Jones is a concern out there.

    1. That is something that I do not believe either I, nor any other person here has the complete answers to.  The men in charge being Chris Jones and Ed Hervey ... You could write a book titled "Inside the Mind of Jones and Hervey" and theorize about all kinds of decisions they made, and I suspect it'd be a New York Times bestseller.  I do know from watching him there and in Saskatchewan, Chris Jones was in my opinion probably the quickest to change QBs rapidly under any situation, sometimes seeing it work well, and other times seeing it backfire.
Nichols himself was actually a victim of this, and it happened to be against us in one game where ... Well long story short we ended up getting beaten bad as was usual in the Drew Willy days against the Esks.  The subplot was that Nichols was pulled, although the problem wasn't that he was missing throws as much as guys like Adarius Bowman dropping them.  Jones pulled him anyway in that game and stuck in James Franklin.  I can only speculate, but it appeared this move ruptured the relationship between Nichols and Jones, and either Nichols wanted out, or Jones was higher on Franklin going forward (most likely), or both.  Because Nichols never started any more as an Esk and many Esks players threw Jones under the bus about his style after he left.  Bottom line though we picked up Nichols and the rest was history.
    2. As some of these previous couple posts were mentioning, i do believe WRs are an attributable factor to this.  Lapolice may be pushing for more of them early in games as well, but yeah i do believe a bit healthier and more confident Nichols also does this.

I would also say it's always been pretty much in Lapo's DNA to always go conservative or ... Play not to lose with a lead

Perhaps a better way of expounding upon and bringing this into context would be considering some past posts made about Nichols in regards to his deep throw abilities.  For example, last year or some time in the past I was seeing posters continue a rumor that the Esks dropped Nichols off their roster in our hands because they did not like his deep ball abilities.  The problem is, no links or hard concrete evidence was ever posted to support this rumor which makes me have trouble buying it.
Problem is, it appeared that the rumor was continued, and hence some posters would conclude based on buying it that Nichols would always be bad at throwing deep balls.  So hence, while not actually using that specific word, one could infer that their notion is Nichols would be permanently bad at throwing them.

This is what you like to do. State something that folks never said or even suggested like your making some sort of point. Your thinking is too black and white. It's not Nichols or PLAP at fault all the time. I never suggested that PLAP should take no blame. Of course he's a problem some of the time. Receivers dropping balls and the other team making plays are also parts of the problem. The key here is that it's not always #BEBN.
Last year and years before that, Nichols couldn't hit the long ball with any degree of accuracy. You call that a myth over and over again, when it's a fact. He's been much better at it this year, but that doesn't change the past.
You make up scenarios up so nothing is Nichols fault. Receivers lining up wrong or running the wrong pattern don't magically turn bad throws into good ones nor does the receiver making tough catches. It's not an attempt to discredit Nichols. It's just an attempt to look at Nichols level of accuracy. If the accuracy stats don't match what you see, it's as likely you're seeing it wrong as it is that the stats are wrong.

Thing is...we have beaten 2 undefeated teams...sign of a good team
Whipped the hopeless Argo's and it was never in doubt from the 3 minute mark...sign of good team
won season opener on the road...sign of good team
All the while racking up 30+ points for...1 pick and some very precision like work in the Red Zone...Like what...over 90% efficiency??
That tells me we have more than a capable QB to get us where we need to go...you have to remember basically prior to this year we were a one trick pony at receiver and had to rely on Harris....now...we have weapons that teams have to respect...and still have Harris to contend with...also Nichols looks a lot like 2016/2017 Nichols...where he was not hurt and pulled a lot of  games out of the fire for us for a win...and it's pretty obvious from his play last year that he wasn't right all year long..
but this year he appears to be back and has more talent to use....so if he plays smart ball...doesn't try to be a hero and fatten his stats...we will win 9 times out of ten and to have people be down on him after averaging 4 offensive TD's a game so far..throwing 10 TD's to 1 INT....and not really having a game in doubt after the first quarter of the season...well thats just baseless
we play Ott/Ham/T.O coming up next 3 game before our Calgary home game and if we play like we have been even with no overall improvement (which we will as season rolls on) we could be looking at a 7-0 record with that home match against CGY....Hamilton doesn't scare me and I think we will handle them rather easily

Look, I know people are disappointed that we are 0-4.  Yes, its frustrating that Nichols has thrown 10 picks and only 1 TD.  But its just too early to panic.  We need to keep our objectivity and composure, at this stressful time.

    This thread needs more gin.
