he's a different player...more of a Sheed but better big play ability

Hopefully Mitchell takes that step up now in the Lawleresque type role...he definately has the skills....better speed....His head wasnt in it in 2023....kinda turned the corner again last yr....if his head isnt into here....then he wont last into 2026

Mitchell was badly effected by the Esks musical chair QB situation and the fact their defence could never get off the field.

Yea it’s definitely not a stretch to say that the majority of you weren’t huge on Dobson last season. As the 6th OL he seemed like a brawler with a whole lot of nasty to him, I thought he’d be more effective as a starter.

Great short yardage guy, or good 6th OL. We kind of let him **** or get off the pot last year and he didn't pass the test.

yup...needs more seasoning to see if he can achieve upper teir...he not there yet...and a lot of times he definately was fumbling and bumbling around out there when he was opposite legit defenders....almost looked lost...and having Kolo beside him just amplified it

Dobson had ample time in development. He's as good as he is going to be, which isn't very good.

Rest of the league trying to get wr deals back in line with other premium skill positions and Hamilton screws it up.

I love the talent of lawler and Dobson but they aren’t with that.

Lawler is a big loss, Dobson....I honestly think this will work out well for us. Rather spend on a new centre and let Wallace or Randolph start.

Almost $300k for Lawler apparently. I think you guys are smart for not paying that price.

Per Hodge, Liam Dobson is also going to Hamilton.

Goveia is bringing all his buddies…

Honestly, I felt that Dobson was the most over rated OL in the CFL last year and I don't really feel all that bad about him leaving. This isn't sour grapes either, I have openly questioned his abilities consistently over the past year. Watched him consistently get beaten badly like a rented mule every time he went up against an elite DT. The apologists here blamed it on Kolo, and they were partially right but WAAAAAY too many times he just got straight up manhandled one on one and you can't blame that on the centre. Good riddance.

Lawler is a great player but he just vibes as its all about Kenny. Would have liked some loyalty after we paid him so well and put up with his stupidity (DUI, not getting his immigration status sorted).

I am not blaming Kenny entirely for taking the money. In all honesty, he probably got a contract offer from us that reflected the fact that he has been unreliable.

I think it was Wade giving him permission to go off script.

Nah...he has his sms structure and it's his job to build the roster. He's got the SMS to spend how he sees fit. Doesn't need Wad's permission on who to sign.

Id say a legit MLB....NOSE/DT and DE are pretty huge holes here

I'd argue MLB. I think Jones did a fine job there. DE and NOSE...agreed....that's why we are letting meh talent go and are more than likely going to see something on both those fronts as well. It's day 2 of the tampering period. A ton of really good players out there.

    Not at all explosive.

To me, I'm bringing in and discarding American rush ends and WIL backers until I find someone special.  These are really the two simplest spots on the field.  Do the same job everytime, beat your opponent and flow to the ball.  If you're not at all explosive, sayonara.

Really no need to settle on a handful of guys who are not at all special.  If you're waiting on guys to be good you'll be developing them just in time to see them sign with your rivals.

I personally am glad to see some of these mediocre talents not resigned by us. We've seen so much of that over the past few years. Guys brought back out of familiarity really.

Who was that?  I don't remember him making offers to other team's FA's, he was handcuffed trying to re-sign his own.

Amazingly stupid, Rourke earns $200k more than Zach but now costs the Lions less in SMS!

Not sure, but Walters did say that the cash for both Lawler/Schoen only opened up last minute and that it was not plan A.

if you do due diligence on a player, be t film...talking to players...coaches ....college coach and determine him a target then shouldnt be throwing cash into the wind...thats being exceptional in your recruitment....I agree tho on how the Riders....B.C...Hamilton seem to go about it...not a good approach

I saw Walter's theory, but also have seen and been involved with other G.m's and how they do it too...like they say...more than 1 way to skin a cat...and any approach iant necessarilythe right...or wrong....it's okay to deviate if it makes you better...it really is....honest

I'm not suggesting that Walters won't deviate just that he won't do so until something in his plan has not worked out. He will try to balance the money first. If there are still dollars left that is when Walters will go for it. He's not typically a day one guy unless we have a huge hole to fill from a superstar leaving the fold and we are targeting another star player in his stead.

It looks like Walters is returning to his positional balanced budget this off-season, especially if he doesn't bid high on Lawler again.  Last year he threw fiscal responsibility out the window when he blew his wad on 3 offensive players and let other useful players slip away due to lack of funds.  The balanced approach gives him the financial ability to participate in FA once again even if he can't be one of the big spenders, as long as he's prepared to make the hard cuts rationally when and where they need to be made.

Last year he only blew the wad on O after a couple guys turned us down. I can't see how we wouldn't have the funds to go big or go home this offseason. Lots of space was cleared. Just a matter of finding the guys that want to be here, and that make our team better. No use letting a Lawler walk but giving the same money to Lewis. I do agree that Walters probably wants to balance out a little disparity he had going because receiver $ were off script.

Walters/bombers are at a big disadvantage with the anchor that is Collaros contract. The majority of teams have at least 175k extra to compete for free agents. If more than one team is competing for a free agent ie Stubblefield we will not get them.

Have to wonder if the Lawler situation is handcuffing him as well

Collaros contract effects how much we can spend on backup more than anything else.

I suggest that if there is an opportunity to bring in an impact player or 2....you do it....if that means moving on from a lesser albeit here for several yrs here guy or 2...so be it.

Also don't go into any off-season/FA pigeon holing yourself with the idea that you only have so much in this area to spend...and that area...or we are going to go Canadian here...import there, but try obtain the best players within reason at any given position regardless of Nationality or position, and actually use your TC to sort it all out...hardly an unreasonable thing, and one many a successful organization does

like Fonzie?? lol...Not sure what that analogy means tho...But at times how we go about things is puzzling and a bit limiting...regardless if people wanna say "ya but" 5 straight appearances.....how bout "Yeah but we epically threw 3 straight wins away" what o we NEED to do to change that, and what was the reasons for it.....not just shashay around business as usual...with not a worry in the world

You can argue about how you think a GM carves up his SMS pie, and I will listen to what that GM has actually explained as to how he does it. If you actually listened to Walters speak he explains very fully why we do so, and why we are not the first out of the gate on high price FAs unless we are specifically targeting them. Last year we signed Lawler/Schoen/BO but only after we had whiffed on other attempts. Walters pivots only when it is clear that salary in one area allows him to do so. It's a smart strategy, that makes sure we are not just throwing cash into the wind like the Riders do. He won't weaken one area of his club to augment another. They all have a set range so that we can have balance throughout.

not writing it off per say...but doesn't appear like we have any kind of plan currently....and we missed out already on a lot of guys who could have helped here

I think that Walters meticulously plans each offseason as well as he can. There are so many variables, moving parts, and things beyond his control that to not have multiple plans for the offseason would guarantee he would have lost his job in very short order. Are you suggesting that he take a fly by the seat of his pants approach?

  15. 7 minutes ago, Booch said:

ummm....first yr never saw the field...so really one yr of actual play...and yes you gotta shine for sure....but why are guys who didnt brought back?....Just because they a vet?...explain that one

Not arguing that point. I don't have access to that information. All I can argue is that Garbutt being let go is not an unreasonable move. I don't see it as anything more than we let a meh player go. You want to read other things into it...have at it. I honestly believe he got passed on the DC last year by a better player and then we brought in a vet at the same position. We really didn't have room for him anymore.

  16. 2 minutes ago, Booch said:

thing is...when of late have we seen anyone actually get a legit shot to compete....when a season ending injury hasnt dictated we had to

Person's is legit...That being aid after WJ last year Garbutt was our next best edge guy...prob most rounded, and essentially playing as a raw rookie...nothing like starting to try and develop a guy and then just let him go...Osh won't play a diff raw rookie regularly in his spot.....and even last year...how many times did we see Thomas on the edge??....like wt..literal F was that???...yeah we need to get younger....but...those guys need to have a legit opp to seize the spot...and they don't...Re-signing Jake...retaining Schmeck...Wilson...verify's it....maybe we will have full camp competition and the best stay and the weak get cut...I wont hold my breathe on that tho

other than Nichols...Griffin...BO....you could say that about most our roster too tho....and we had a butt load of guys who looked invisible a lot...and good rarely....

Just because others looked invisible too is not a reason to keep him. Garbutt was here two years, and did nothing when given an opportunity. Was it too small a window of opportunity? Maybe...but that's life in pro sports. You gotta shine when your number is eventually called. He didn't.

After signing Logan I'm fully expecting Lawler to be gone. It really looks like we're going in another direction with our offense. And quite frankly - I'm pretty excited.

Might be right about Lawler, but I doubt Logan makes a difference one way or another. He'd be fairly cheap and is likely here primarily due to his return skills. If there was a signing that signalled we might lose one of our big 2 receivers it was Mitchell. Honestly, I think that was a very under rated signing as well. He had an off year last year in the Elks offence, but is a potential 1000 yard guy in our offence.

It's been widely reported that he's not expected back for a long time yet, but... I suspect we'll know more after his media availability tomorrow.

Dalton has said he feels he'll be ready for TC.

    And there’s the problem

they’ve spent all this money on almost all of the right things, building a solid OL to protect their QB and building a solid defense to get the ball back into the QB’s hands

    one problem

the QB is still Tre Ford

Hervey doing it right tho. They can't fix QB right now anyway.
