    No and no..

Oh 100 percent...I don't think he will hold us to the coals either

Demski tho...man if we coukd rework that one. Wheatfall has potential...but so did a lot of other guys...and we know how ZC likes to favor and zero in on 2 guys all the time

Schoen is still a big question mark too..what's he gonna be like...acl returnees ...especially in skilled positions at times have a mental hurdle more than a physical one and at wr that spit second hesitation is huge...he already takes a serious pounding more than any other receiver I have seen...so continually being pummeled as ZC will prob feed him more than he should can be a recipe for disaster

I see no reason why we can't or wouldn't fit Lawler in at 225-235...slap a bonus in there even to motivate him even tho he doesn't

I am hoping Schoen will be 100 but we gotta hedge our bets

Maybe nobody is overly keen taking it on due to...this ...or that....

I doubt that's the problem. We got the tools to make any half decent OC look good. Might be cash strapped for the position.

Should. But I’m not holding my breath.

It is very odd. About the only explanation I can think of is we have our guy and for some reason can't announce it yet, or we are waiting for someone and can't make it official yet.

The longer this goes the more I'm starting to think it's Lapo and we are letting him fulfill some contract obligations first?

Thing is we need a vet/known commodity in addition to what we have currently to fill out our receiving Corp

Schoen shouldn't and can't be assumed to be 110% immediately...and who's to say he doesn't have a Lil set back...We have Mitchell...Demski as what you can consider proven...after that a 2nd yr Clercius and ???

If one of or any of the vets gets injured...that's a shallow and depleted Corp

Hollins want no part of...Rhymes is a mmm...dunno but he won't come cheaper than Mitchell..after that it's a collection of worse than what we had last yr...Lawler you should expect to be a given...Sure we have Wheatfall but he still a work in progress too...and we know exactly what to expect from ZC with a group he not familiar or comfortable with...or saddled with rookies

Yea we need Lawler but it has to be with a shave

  4. Love Lawler but think we may lose him and I understand completely if Walter's won't show him the money again. We haven't got value for his pay the last 2 years.

He likely has a very similar contract to Schoen in front of him. He can choose to be here and take an incentive laden contract that will require he bets on himself or take the money and run I guess.

The savings we could see on lawler and schoen are significant.

which makes me look at Demskis deal in an even worse light. He would be on track to be the highest paid wr in the league at this point.
I love Demski and I’d like him to be back. But not to the tune of 225k+. In a choice between Demski and ceresna I’d like ceresna. I’d rather pay ford to stay than give Demski that kind of money.

I’d rather have kept woli and let Demski go while saving 100k+

You can't regret what was fair market rate after the fact. But I agree that there appears to have been a reset. Too bad that didn't happen a year or two earlier

Lawler usually makes the more spectacular catches that land him on his butt or head, but Schoen is better gaining YAC than Lawler, as is Demski.  I could see Dru Brown convincing Ottawa to spend big on Schoen, he's the hardest working receiver in the league and will come back strong.

I don't think that any player needs to convince their GM to throw the kitchen sink at Schoen. Teams will go after him hard if he makes it to FA.

I’m starting to get a weird feeling we’re going to see a bunch of guys leaving.

I know people are gonna start up with the “how come we can afford Jake but can’t afford Schoen” even though that’s nowhere near how it works, my concern is that we really struggling to be retaining any prime of their career talent who literally wasn’t born within 3 hours of here.

I can see teams structuring some really unique contracts for him to give him some assurances despite the low price tag he’s likely going to command this year.

Who have we struggled to retain outside of leaving to the NFL?

I don't understand this rumour that Schoen isn't a deep ball threat? lol. WTF have you people been watching? He's made some unbelievable plays on underthrown/challenged deep balls. He's also taken 20 yard catches to the house. He's a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

This is not to take anything away from Lawler, who is obviously one of the best. Both will be back.

No one is saying that Schoen isn't a deep threat. Just that Lawler is better at it.

  7. 10 minutes ago, wbbfan said:

He missed 2 games in his first 2 years, then had the 1 injury last year. He's only had 1 injury put him on the 6 game. Kenny hasn't played a full season in any of his 5 years, he averages 11-12 games a year and 1 6 game stint each season. Kennys best year was 1014 yards and 6 tds. Schoens average over his first 2 is 1300 yards and 13 tds. Greg ellingson had 1 year that is comparable to schoens average. Out of 10 seasons. Ellingson also played a 6 year stretch not missing more than 2 games.

Yea, Schoen is more productive and reliable than Kenny. Kenny will make the highlight reel snag at a key moment of the game. That's the choice the Bombers will be making if they can't get them both.

  8. 35 minutes ago, SpeedFlex27 said:

Schoen is Greg Ellingson. Awesome when he plays but spends more time on the 6 game IL than catching footballs in games. Nah, Schoen's the one that can leave & we won't miss him. Lawler is the better receiver & can flip the field with one deep ball from Collaros.

How many games has Lawler played the last 2 years. If your argument is that Schoen isn't worth it because of reliability then the argument has to be the same for Lawler. Now, I agree that if we can only have one then Lawler should be our pick but I disagree with your premise as to why. Lawler is just a better big play receiver, while Schoen is the more consistently productive one. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, but my personal bias is towards the big play guy. Doesn't make it the right pick but I can choose my favorite, just as you have.

It was posted Monday on Facebook. Thin credibility, to be sure, but as has been speculated in this forum, there are ways of approaching a player under contract that do not involve direct contact, and doubtless has been done often. Time will reveal all.

That was based on Stronson at Riderfans rumor and as everyone knows he is full of crap.

Probably the juxtaposition of Thomas staying.....and Wol leaving.....that has some folks a little bent.

Appears that way and I get it from an overall perspective. However, I don't think this is an either/or situation SMS wise. Woli was banged up most of last year, never did play at 100% after his injury and it seemed to linger. Woli was adjudicated on the merits of his contract, health, and replaceability. We moved on. It happens. He was a fan fave because of the quality of guy he is, but as a football player he was average at best and we have a guy that looks like he deserves a lot more reps in our offence at his position playing on a rookie deal. Was Drew's contract something that was over the top? Not even remotely. Therefore, I am thinking the Bombers feel as though we have or will have better options for the money.

we can trim national dlineman...we dont need 4...and if we plan to use those 4 as the main contributors to the line....ouch...we will have a brutal dline

I know Walters has said he allocates this and that for certain groups....but he can also deviate as well...and that shouldnt affect who you go after or who you retain because a certain group is all used up SMS wise

Woli got 110....Jake gets at least that I would assume if not more......now who offers the most value for that money as a depth piece...rotational guy or limited reps guy...Like many say as to if thats what they do with Jake to justify his signing then its good...even tho we have 3 other guys besides him?

Woli by far would offer more to us....as he younger....more athletic...can play all the receiver spots and I am sure would work on cover teams if asked and do well....hold for kicks if need be...and If one of Clercius or Demski get dinged...and I sure One will...we know he can step in...start...and be very productive

Jake...offers none of that...He can play tackle....let me rephrase he can go out there in the tackle position.....but offers minimal at best production....cant play anywhere else...sure we put him off the edge and that was an utter embarrasment to watch.....he can't cover on kicks....hold for the kicker?....good god....and if he has to step in as a full time starter cause whoever gets hurt...lord help us

There would have been 110-130k give or take tied up in Jake or  Woli and the same for use elsewhere by trimming one of the roster....I see where the value and benefit would be...as I sure others do as well....Apparently tho not Osh....as I sure he was in the discussion as to keep Woli...and not re-sign Jake....or should have been....dumb move

Walters does not do anything Walters does not want to do. Osh has an opinion and Walters will consider it, and then make the moves that best fit the club in his opinion. Suggesting that Walters is Osh's puppet is ridiculous. Woli may very well offer more bang for the buck than JT if you look at it myopically, but that's not how Walters carves the pie and he is the man solely responsible for doing so. Also, there are a **** load of assumptions being made about Woli being more valuable than Jake, without any of us having a kernel of an idea as to what Walters plan is at NAT receiver or what Jake is actually being paid or what his planned role might be. Just a couple weeks ago we were all told that Osh was going to force Walters to keep an unproductive Bighill. and when anyone said maybe we should wait and see they were shouted down.. I will again ask that we wait and see how this all shakes out before making way too premature assumptions about how we should have kept this guy or that guy. Could very well be that Walters has an iron in the fire on a NAT receiver.

The receiver market is gonna be set by someone and then that will be what it will be, Lewis isn’t signed in Edmonton either. They all gonna have to take a cut. All it takes tho is one gm and owner (ahem bc) to throw 300 at a Kenny or Lewis and there you go again.

The league is looking to correct the market on receivers. It happens every few years like that and GMs only throw obscene money when there are multiple parties willing to do so. Not seeing any of those kind of GMs at the moment.

Lol no kidding, crying about this just shows a massive lack of understanding.

The NFL would be capable of crippling the CFL if they didn’t like our request for compensation. As simple as them saying they will honour CFL contracts and won’t sign a player who has signed a CFL contract until it has been fulfilled.

The ONLY way I could see the NFL agreeing to any such financial help for us is unfettered access to any player in our league at any time.

not trying to be a crap disturber or arse...but do you have that as a fact?...or just an assumption?

It possibly could tho with the Thomas signing....say they are looking to spend such and such in FA on some big ticket prices...and only have room for so much depth with vet Canadian salaries....so say 115...120k for a spot...Went to JT in lieu of Woli....and we just basically got rid of any National depth that has experience and usefulness at receiver....a spot we use for ratio...and are carrying 4 National DT's now...a spot where we dont need that much depth there....it wasn't a ratio requirement and especially with 2 of them (JT and Schmeck) who really are bottom barrel talent wise...one of whom has zero upside...and another...Samson who never got a snap...so is a big unknown too....rosterand sms wise....this doesnt look like the smartest allocation of assets and cash...Unless like I mentioned they have some big mind blowing event in FA happening....and I not too positive thats happening

Woli was making 110k. League min is only 20k less than that. Cutting Woli clears 20k. Not exactly big savings there. Also, Walters has stated ad infiniti how he goes about doing his SMS by position group and not by overall. He allocates X dollars per position group and goes from there.  Signing Jake had absolutely squat to do with not signing Woli. Not how Walters does his SMS, and that is based on Walters own explanations on how he manages the SMS.

    52 minutes ago, Bigblue204 said:

I believe Walters has stated a few times that he has an amount allocated to each positional group. So I'm not sure the savings on WR would then transfer to DT or vice versa...not saying it's impossible. I just don't think that's how they work it. And if we're going off that, Wollys $$ will be spent on WR.

Exactly right.....,and the thing is that people are not really taking into account is that Woli was not very highly paid for a NAT starter. The savings on him are negligible. They will help a little bit but we aren't signing anyone of significance with those extra 20k.

  14. 47 minutes ago, SpeedFlex27 said:

Marcel Bellefeuille is still available. ;)

Sure it is, releasing Woli & Bighill clears up money to chase after free agents. Mike Rose, James Vaughters, Jake Ceresna will be available in free agency. I have a feeling we'll be bringing in someone on the DL to help WJ out.

Bighill yea....Woli was making 20k over league minimum so no real big savings there. His salary was not preventing us from going after anyone. They simply wanted to go another direction at receiver. Far more likely than salary dump is that the Bombers are looking at going with a crap load more 1 NAT receiver sets this year.

If the hometown team offers a player an opportunity to come home for big bucks they'll go. If I was playing in Edmonton & I had a chance to come home to Winnipeg, I'd jump at it. If Clercius develops into an elite Canadian receiver, the Als will come calling. We all know that Hamilton will go after Tyrell Ford to play as I believe he's from Burlington. His family is still there.

If your hometown team throws big bucks at you then yea some players will leave to go home. However, the key part of that IF is the big bucks. We have the same SMS as they do.

We have let go a number of vets over the past few years (Jeffcoat, Bighill, Woli) where salary, age and sometimes production were a factor. Jake's older, his production isn't great and he's not on a minimum  salary and yet he survives. Make sense now?

No. Still makes no sense because it was never a choice between them. Even if we don't re-sign Thomas it has zero bearing on keeping/releasing Woli. Releasing Woli was not a SMS move.
