    CFL News @CFL_News

    .@sportscage - "I think the #Riders will destroy the #Ticats on Sunday"… via @TSN1200 #CFL

I think Pedersen has officially lost his mind with tweets like that one and this one:

@sportscage - "Once #Riders get it figured out, going 2 B back 2 being upper echelon team, powerhouse like played in Ott. last yr"

If beating an expansion team twice makes you a powerhouse (once by a mere 3 points), you've got a bizarre definition of that term.

  2. If anyone's following the Twitter scroll on this page...Rod Pedersen absolutely livid about Penton's piece saying that Lapo will be in for Chamblin by Labour Day. Calling it ridiculous.

    I'm getting a chuckle anyhow... :)

Lapo is agreeing with Pedersen on this one (not that I would expect him to do anything but deny the rumours at this point anyway).

I agree with @sportscage. I like Kirk but not his insiders segment.

No team has ever started with 4 games on the road? I guess 2012 didn't happen then? Oh, how I wish that were the case. -_-

    That's from Steve Daniel:

Waiting for Home: This season will be the first time that a CFL club has ever played their first four games on the road. Hamilton does not open at home until August 3rd and that too is unprecedented (except for pre-World War II times with much smaller schedules each year).

Bit of a boo boo by the CFL's Head Statistician.

Isn't Toronto playing five on the road to start 2015?

The CFL is trying to say the Argo's playing in Ft McMurray (a mere 3800 km's away from their normal home) against Edmonton (440 km's away) counts as a home game.

I was actually going to call in to the coaches show last night to ask this question, but life.

Hajrullahu is 4 for 7 on converts this year, clipping along at a rate that is nearly unacceptable. I don't know how much they want to tinker with things, seen as how he's perfect on field goals, but at what point does O'Shea make the call to start going for the two point convert on a regular basis?

Here's how the touchdowns we've scored breakdown this year.

    Week 1 - 1st Q - Winnipeg 7 Saskatchewan 0 (convert good)

    Week 1 - 2nd Q - Winnipeg 14 Saskatchewan 7 (convert good)

    Week 1 - 3rd Q - Winnipeg 23 Saskatchewan 23 (2 point convert good)

    Week 1 - 4th Q - Winnipeg 30 Saskatchewan 26 (convert good)

    Week 2 - 1st Q - Winnipeg 7 Hamilton 3 (convert NO good)

    Week 2 - 2nd Q - Hamilton 38 Winnipeg 13 (convert NO good)

    Week 2 - 4th Q - Hamilton 49 Winnipeg 26 (2 point convert good)

    Week 3 - 2nd Q - Winnipeg 12 Montreal 3 (convert NO good)

    Week 3 - 2nd Q - Winnipeg 19 Montreal 10 (convert good)

I understand why in some cases (all 3 converts in the SSK game) you would go for the single point. But Lirim is 1 for 4 since then and in nearly every situation, you could've argued it was reasonable to go for the 2 point convert.

Let's say we average 3 touchdowns a game (our current average) over the span of the year going forward. Even if we generously boost Lirim's conversion percentage from his current 57% to a fairly level 75% going forward, that would give him a total of 34/45 on single point converts going forward for the rest of the year. If that is the case, all we would need to do is see a 40% conversion rate of the 2 point convert (18/45) for us to actually end up coming out ahead.

Obviously this ignores the situational nature of some of those converts and I wouldn't expect O'Shea to not manage the game properly, but with the combination of Cam Marshall and Robert Marve looking so smooth in the 2 point conversion set they've been working, how bad does Lirim have to get before O'Shea elects to go for the 2 on a more regular basis? If he made the commitment to go for 2 every time EXCEPT for when it absolutely made sense to go for 1 (to give a 4 point lead late in a game, etc) I don't think I would be opposed to it ...

At this point, I am not really worried about the in-game scoreboard situation. At a just over 50% rate of conversion on the single point, the rate of conversion for 2 points conversions being roughly 40-50%, it may become a case of "we might as well just go for two" and have the same rate of success. Not sure why Lirim is having problems with these but I suspect it's a mental thing.

I thought I heard/read that he's having trouble with the angle on the converts as they are centered rather than placed on the hash marks like field goals.   If that's the case, I'd assume it's just a matter of time before he's comfortable with them.

  5. I don't know what that guy was doing when he was leaning over the girl, but the thing that jumped into my mind is that he was filming her laptop. I know when I'm at work my laptop could have sensitive data on it and I would be very unhappy to have someone lean in and film it.

I'm betting that Skidmore and the city have a long long history. And while definitely not an excuse for how it was handled, I think it was kind of a setup on both sides. They wanted him to do something to justify them calling security. And he wanted them to do something to get it on camera.

Unfortunately they both got their wish.

Apparently he was checking her name tag.  He was on some rant about government workers not having proper ID which carried onto the security guards not having ID.

Depending on where her name tag was and how he touched it/her, there might be a very good reason why the one woman was scolding him for being inappropriate.

  6. Greg Carr was a midseason recruit. Derek Armstrong too, though he'd already had some CFL time with Saskatchewan so he probably doesn't count.

There was that emergency during 2013 when we lost both our starting tackles and brought in Dan Knapp and Jarvis Jones on like three days notice. Both guys played pretty well for us their first game vs. Edmonton tho we lost in overtime -- I think that was Burke's kneeldown game and also the game that exiled Goltz to Burke's doghouse for good.

Both Knapp and Jones stuck around after the emergency was over, they were with us in 2014.

I was thinking the same thing.  A vet picked up mid-season stands more of a chance to start than a rookie does.  If a guy like Rennie Curran gets tired of waiting for another NFL shot, he could easily join a team at any point in the season and be starting shortly after.

  7.

Friesen is tweeting at me.  Im probably the least knowledgeable football fan here.  Please feel free to jump in to the tweet convo.  lol

Seems like a reasonable question to me.  If you are tweeting that his coverage is terrible then you must know what you'd rather see.

It's not reasonable coming from Friesen.  Even if you told him what you'd like to see, he's already admitted he's not watching so what can he tell you?  It would be more reasonable if it came from Bob.

  8. I know some of us love a good debate and this is an interesting one.

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/07/politics/sc-confederate-flag-future/index.html

The above link is the latest in the South Carolina situation.  But I see so many people on Facebook defending the flag as some sort of symbol of Southern Pride or Southern Culture.  Like iced tea and football or whatever.

I actually used to have a confederate flag hanging on my wall when I was a kid.  Can you guess why?

Dukes of Hazzard would be my guess.  My favorite Hot Wheels as a kid was the General Lee.

Article 14 of the collective bargaining agreement says a contract can be terminated if a player shall "fail, refuse or neglect to obey the Club's rules governing training and conduct of Players."

Kings GM Dean Lombardi met with Richards at his summer home in Kenora, Ont., at that time before electing not to use a compliance buyout on the remainder of his deal.

    http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/kings-terminate-mike-richards-contract-cite-breach/

This is going to be a long drawn out court battle with the NHLPA.  You wonder if it was lack of training or something more going on with Richards behind the scenes.

This definitely was an earlier problem that the Kings thought was dealt with but maybe it was a only temporary fix.

Last summer general manager Dean Lombardi didn’t use a compliance buyout on Richards, which would have led to no salary cap penalty, believing Richards re-dedication to physical fitness could bring him back to form
