One addition I'd like to see is cameras installed in the flightdeck (maybe the cabin as well) that feed into the recorders. Surely in this day and age they can do that.  Its one thing to hear whats going on, but seeing it would help as well and leave no question as to what the pilots are doing.

That will never happen... pilots wont go for it and really when you think of it ... it wouldnt help anything in this case.

Would you agree to have a camera watching you work?

I've worked with cameras in the workplace for many years and I'm pretty sure TUP also has years of experience with that.  They can definitely be useful in determining what happened after an event.  If you aren't doing anything wrong (you are at work after all), what's the problem?

  2. I was just in Jamaica in January and someone had a Riders flag draped on their balcony.  If it hadnt been the third floor Im sure some of us would have climbed up, retrieved it and then created a photo journal of the flag's new journey...

We had this in Mexico too.  The 13th Man logo on their flag made me laugh every time I saw it though.  The Rider fans didn't find the "Too Many Men" penalty signal quite as funny.

  3. Do these local wrestling shows actually make the promoters money?  I've been under the impression most of these shows lose money when you factor in all the comps for what is usually a small crowd at these events.  And I would imagine the gate is the most important revenue source by far.  What other revenue sources are there that compare to  that?

I would imagine a cut of the bar sales would do it.  A place like Doubles isn't packing people in on a regular basis so anything that brings people in the door (even if they don't pay to get in) is a win for them.  The price of a ticket compared to a few hours of drinking/eating is pretty small I would think.

  4. @DarrinBauming: Reaves' measurables from the Edmonton regional #CFLCombine:

    40-yard dash: 4.69

    Vertical: 35"

    Broad jump: 10'1"

    Bench: 19

    3-cone: 7.06

For comparison, here's how he ranked against the 8 other WR's at the combine:

    40: 2nd (top guy had 4.65)

Vertical: Tied for 4th (top guy had 37.5")

Broad Jump: 2nd (top guy had 10'4")

Bench: 2nd (top guy had 20)

    3 Cone: 2nd (top guy had 7.03)

Bauming didn't include his shuttle time which was 4.52 and ranked him 5th (top guy had 4.35)

  5. I have been converting over to using Kodi and outside of wanting to watch live sports at decent quality ... you could almost cut cable completely in the near future and simply stick with a good internet plan. Most episodes of any show are uploaded within a few hours and at HD quality.

The quality of live sports is my biggest issue with kodi. Everything else about it is fantastic. Any show, including Netflix exclusives, and any movie you could want.

  6. While I generally dislike the CRTC, Im not sure how much of a problem this really is that requires a fix.

I'd have to look it up but what is the cost of basic cable now?

I can appreciate Harper's desire for a pick & pay option but I also understand the fear that a pick & pay system could actually be more expensive for some customers.

The CRTC said customers can choose to continue with their current service plan & pricing so it would only be more expensive if they want it to be.

I had started to record it and never got around to actually watching it.  It looks well produced.  Im not sure it would keep my interest but I base that on nothing.  Im through all six seasons of SOA and am awaiting the release of season 7 next week and then am looking for a new series.  I considered Breaking Bad but I dont know...just doesnt seem all that great.  Good thing House of Cards debuts shortly.  Maybe Ill give Vikings a try.

If you started watching BB from the very beginning, every episode you'd feel different.

Agreed.  I wasn't overly impressed with Breaking Bad right off the bat, but I had heard so many people raving about it that I stuck it out & was very happy I did.

Maybe I just dont get it because I never read the books.  But I was bored all throughout the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The books are even more boring. I've tried to read the books twice and never been able to slog through them all, the movies on the other hand I really like because they pick up the pace and cut a lot of the useless fat.

As for GoT, the first season was fantastic, after that they got too full of themselves and started ignoring the source material. If you haven't already, do youself a favour and read the books, far far superior to the show, except that fat old George RR Martin is a slacker and won't finish the god damned series already. I read A Game of Thrones when I was 13 for gods sake! That was damned near 20 years ago.

I got through the Hobbit & LOTR but if you thought those were hard to get through, try the Silmarilion!  I gave up on that one after multiple attempts!

LOL you're going to hate the next few seasons of the show then.  Since Martin takes so long, they've said starting this season, the books & show will really start to split off from each other.  The next book is pretty well done though.  I'm hearing maybe mid-October for it's release but who knows with that guy!

  9. Maybe I just dont get it because I never read the books.  But I was bored all throughout the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.  I actually dozed off in every single one of them, especially the middle one where I was bored to tears to watch trees lumber along for like two hours.  I've had people tell me I'd like it if I read the book.  Well the point of a film is not to be a companion piece to a book.

And then The Hobbit was pretty boring too.  Visually gorgeous though.  And I find those films silly.  You really get the sense that Tolkien was just making up nonsense as he went along to entertain his kids.

On the flip side, Game of Thrones has a consistent narrative and the world seems far more fleshed out.  There are times they spend time on a plot point that just when I am about to be bored, they make me really really interested.  There is a lot of world building in GoT and patience in unfolding the stories.  I do have trouble keeping everyone straight with the "middle earth" type names but its not difficult to fall right back into the show every season.  GoT entertains me and makes me care about the characters and world in a way Lord of the Rings doesnt.

And yes, a lot of that is due to the masterful performance of Peter Dinklage who is the heart and soul of the series.

The Hobbit actually was written as a children's story so you're getting the intended purpose.  LOTR was intended as a sequel but spawned into something much bigger (not unlike GOT which was originally a trilogy & now has a 7 book on the way with at least 1 more planned).  I would argue that LOTR isn't fleshed out as well though.  Character-wise, absolutely it's not as deep as GOT, but the world & languages that Tolkien created are incredible.  As Rich pointed out, Tolkien wrote his stuff about 80 years ago when that genre didn't exist. He had a lot of his writing interrupted by WWII so I'm not suprised people don't find it as consistent as GOT.

One major difference for me between the two is that Martin bases a lot of his material on directly on historical events (ex: The Red Wedding is based on The Black Dinner in Scottish history) where Tolkien created more from his mind.

I love both series but I weigh them differently because of those factors.  They are both in the fantasy genre, but it's like apples & oranges to me.

PS - it's not just Dinklage's acting (which is incredible), the Tyrion character is so well written, it's was a favorite character of most people long before the TV show ever aired an episode.

Read that TSN1290 reported that the team will NOT be the Moose.  if that is true, its very interesting.

Do they try and dust off the "Bears" and ask Hersey for their okay?  I've also heard speculation that it would be an airforce themed name using the same colour scheme as Jets and a similar logo but with a different name.

    Manitoba Roughriders Rough Riders

Our version would be having two teams called the Bombers... and it would tie into TUP's post about the air force theme.

  11. Yup.  Its not about forcing people to pay.  in fact, does it even have to be two tier?  What about private delivery of the public system, like at Pan Am Clinic?  Let the private businesses cut the fat, pay for the expensive machinery etc.  With public oversight.

Perhaps better inner city clinics would help too.  How many people go to the ER, especially at night for a non-urgent reason because they have no family doctor and little means to get to a clinic?

I believe this is the intended purpose of the Quick Care clinics the WRHA has been opening (there are 3 currently).  I have no clue how effective they have been though.

I'm pretty sure I read that Derrett said thanks but no thanks when he was approached about the job.

Lawless says he's heard Jeffrey Orridge's (excecutive director of CBC sports) name come up but he doesn't know if he's the guy who will end up getting named commish.

If there's one thing we've learned in Winnipeg... it's that media executives always make good CFL executives...

Orridge has some work to do in the hair department if he's going to live up to the lofty standards set before him!

    Firing nurses lol

Filmon's biggest problem was we had an NDP government before him.  He came into office with a deficit, dwindling transfer payments and a bleak situation.  Balanced the budget, made it law (which the NDP undid) and governed pretty well.  What I like most is, when you look at one of the biggest issues during his time, the Jets' situation, you had people on one side thinking he didnt do enough and people on the other side thinking he had done too much.  Perfect example of not being able to please everyone.

As for privatizing MTS, the MTS of the 90's is a lot different than the MTS of today.  It would have taken a massive public investment for MTS to keep up with changing technologies.  Sure, maybe everyone would still have a landline phone for $10/month.  But thats all you'd have.

Lets look at the MTS privatization. Has anyone gotten better service since it was privatized? Filmon lied- in the election before he privatatized MTS, he personally promised he would not privatize it, and then he did it. He said that Manitoba could not afford to have a crown corporation help keep up with all the pending technology, but and here is where it gets interesting, the legislation to sell MTS specifically prevented SaskTel from buying MTS, and they were very interested.

    Same old stories-lying Tories

Yes, everyone gets better service.  MTS had lousy customer service for awhile and they knew that.  They have improved in that area significantly.  Its certainly no worse than any "call center" service I've experienced with other comparable businesses including SHAW.  If you're referring to the Phone Center stores, they would have gone away regardless and if they didnt, thats a perfect example of why the government couldnt be trusted to effectively run the operation.

Im really not sure there is a great argument against the privatization of MTS at this point.  I was pretty young during the bulk of the Filmon years and actually grew up very anti-PC (my parents were NDP'ers) but the older I got, the more I couldnt deny his effectiveness as a leader.  As a young person in the 90's, Winnipeg sucked big time.  Everyone I knew was dying to get out.  Losing the Jets was another nail in the coffin.  Filmon was the leader we needed at the time we got him.  NDP had come in and screwed things up, economy was bad, transfer payments down.  PC's governed during bad times, steered us through it and when things turned around, here came the NDP with alot of wonderful ways to spend the money the PC's worked hard to generate.  And now history repeats itself except the Selinger government has had pretty good times and loads of money...they are just incompetent.  And along will come a PC party to fix things.

You pretty well ignored everything Tracker wrote, except the 1st part about service.

My biggest beef with the MTS thing was the fact he had just campaigned on not privatizing it.  It's not a whole lot different than Selinger raising the PST after saying he wouldn't.  Both were needed and the right thing to do (IMO) but lying about it before hand is sure to piss people off.  Filmon deserved the critisism and so does Selinger.

Another thing that stinks about it, besides the SaskTel thing, is that Filmon became a director with MTS less than 5 years after privatization, so he not only lied about it, he gained quite a bit financially from it.

  15. If you're even a little bit tech savy, run XMBC off a computer that you can hook up to your TV (or buy a box that runs it), install a few select addons and you're set.  No need for cable or netflix as anything & everything can be found on there.

Here's what I don't get. Why would DC have a TV show about The Flash when they are going to make movies with a different Flash?

I dunno...it's DC.  They aren't exactly very smart when making movies outside of the Batman franchise.

    Quoted for the truth!

To be fair, they do seem to be making some strides in the right direction but they still make some head scratching decisions.  I'm still trying to get my head around Khal Drogo/New Conan as Aquaman.
