I'd love to see LaPo back. As a Bomber fan, I think he would be the perfect coach for the Riders.

Maybe he's attracted by the concept of leading a team that only loses every game by three points. I've never seen a coach better at that then Lapo.

I think this is missing the real point of why the Bombers don't hire experience.... it's a general managers and coaches grave yard. Experienced people don't want to come here because the track record in Winnipeg is a couple years and you're fired with your reputation in tatters. Justified or not that's what's happened for the last 15 years and it does impact whether guys want to come here and subject themselves to that. Walters and O'Shea might not be perfect but you have to give them a long enough period you can't just keep firing people all the time, that ensures you're not able to hire the best candidates.

Suitor may be a homer at times, but at least he isn't annoying to the level of Rod Black. Rod Black is hard to listen to most times.

For me the hardest thing to accept was that the Bombers went into the Grey Cup with a backup that had never played a single down of CFL ball.  I still hate the "all eggs in one basket" approach to managing QB's to this day because of that experience.

The blocked punt cost us the game. The Cornish drive cost us the game.  The missed FG cost us the game.  The timecount may have cost us the game.  The int may have cost us the game.  Stoudemire's fumble and stupid running back instead of catching the ball and falling forward may have cost us the game.  It doesn't come down to a missed single if all of those things don't happen too.

Of course there are different degrees in the quality of officiating, but I disagree that the referees will just take a stab at a call and rely on reviews to 'correct' the call. You have to believe that each official takes their job seriously and want to make the right call. It's a hell of a lot different being on the field of play, in the middle of the action, and making that call based on what you've seen. Nowhere do I see there is enough time to think about it, shrug, and "it's ok, it will be caught on review".

Fan Boy reacted to Dascow in Yantz doesn'st feel he was given a fair shot
I think we need to look at this situation from both perspectives.

Let’s start with Yantz.  I can completely understand why Yantz feels sour about the situation.  If I was in his shoes I would have felt the same.
The reality is he did not really get a fair shot.  It may true that he may not have been up to par in other areas, like the class room, but none of us can claim that because we were not there. We just don’t know.
That being said, even if that was the case I have seen many people who are not that great in the class room, excel on the football field.  So for me, it’s perfectly understandable that he would be upset, because he never got that chance to show what he could do in live action.  It sucks.

Now let’s look at it from the Winnipeg Football Clubs perspective.

The Club needs a fifth arm in camp as to not wear out the other QB’s arms.  They identify Yantz as a good Canadian prospect that can come in and not count against the roster. That’s a perfect scenario for them.

However, now they have 5 arms in camp and there are not enough reps to go around.  The fifth man, no matter where he is from, is always the odd man out.  (A lot of the time the 4th QB is also the odd man out.) Couple that with the fact that the other 4 QB’s on the roster have very little experience themselves which means they need as much playing time as they can get come game day.

I watched one of the Calgary pre-season games and they were able to sit both Bo Levi Mitchell and Drew Tate. (I am not sure if there were some injuries involved in those decisions.) Because of that they were able to give their Canadian QB some reps in a  game. Calgary can afford to do that because they know what they have in both of those QB’s.  I don’t think the same can be said about Willy and co.

There are only 2 pre-season games, which means only 8 quarters for 5 QB’s.  This year it just so happened that Willy needed 4 of those quarters. That leaves 4 quarters for 4 QB’s, all of whom are lacking in experience. It’s more important that Willy gets comfortable within the system than if the 5th string QB gets a few reps in game.

Quite frankly the Bombers knew who their top 3 QB’s were going into camp.  Willy, Brohm and Marve. They needed to make sure that the top 2 guys had enough time under center because they are the ones that will be seeing the field in the regular season.  Getting Willy ready for the season is priority #1 and then getting the back-up, who ever that might be, ready is priority #2.  The rest have to fight for scraps and when you’re fighting with 2 other QB's who have much more of a pedigree than you do, for scraps you’re probably not going to get much.

In the end, I sympathies with Yantz, because it kind of sucks that the circumstances did not allow him to show what he can do, but I completely understand why the Bombers  could not give him the time under center that he desired.

I wish him well in his future endeavors.

My daughters think the the 6'5'' guy with the most gorgeous blue eyes and the terrific hair was a good catch. I was too shy to mention that he has good hands.

They both though he should lose the sideburns. Evidently Elvis left the building a long time ago.

I said he might be a good player some time in the future but they said something about him looking a like a "player" now. They aren't that into football.

He didn't go to mini camp (he was still draft-eligible at that point). Based on following him in the CIS, Walters and team determined after he went undrafted that Yantz was better than the QBs they *did* have at mini camp, and signed him.

As for "getting a fair shot", that's totally up for interpretation. Yantz obviously feels that he didn't, but not getting reps in the last week of practices could very well be because of what others have said above -- maybe in the drills he was way behind, or maybe he was taking too long with the playbook.

I had hoped the team was viewing him as a project (just like Reaves), knowing they had no shot this year, but wanting to get them involved now with the hope of it paying off in a year or 2. Obviously they felt it wasn't worth the roster spot, and that the TC and preseason reps were more important to give to the guys who they felt would make the team and need to be fully evaluated.

To many Canadian QBs who never get to a CFL training camp, Yantz got more than a fair shot! He just didn't do enough in his limited time to warrant more of a look.

I do hope the rules are changed so we can see every CFL team carrying a Canadian QB on the roster some day, and they're given the time to gain experience to match their certain raw talent. But until that happens, they're starting so far behind the 8 ball, it's just not even fair to them.

Clearly they were hoping to get a diamond in the rough. In a league where the team holds the options, wouldn't you want to sign a guy that might pan out to a longer deal, when you know you can just release him if he doesn't have what it takes? It sounds more like Yantz is a rookie who just didn't see that side of it, thought the team was more committed to him than they were, and bought into the interviews and press around his signing.

It sucks, but it's the way it is.

I can't imagine any player looking to sign with the Bombers being told, "You probably aren't gonna make it, now please sign with us." Every player is likely told they're going to get a shot -- nobody would come otherwise. But I also believe the team means it when they say it, even those lower on the totem pole. They're in camp, they're taking part in drills, they're getting reps (and it sounds like through rookie camp and the beginning of main camp, Yantz was getting more reps). He obviously showed to be well behind the other guys, and so the reps dropped off. Again, it sucks, but he got his shot and didn't sieze it. And of course, that's in part because of the system that doesn't value Canadian QBs despite them coming in *way behind* U.S. QBs as far as training, experience, etc.

Anyone mad at the Bombers in this situation apparently are more comfortable with the team being nice than trying to win that far-too-elusive Grey Cup title. The best players should make the team, factoring in the ratio. Period.

I figure there are a few older people on this board who have had to put together work teams so they can relate to how hard it is to put together effective project teams or departments or whatever. This aspect of football is really interesting to me. There has to be a balance between physical and interpersonal skills (think Kalif Mitchell) How many out of control young bucks can you have at a time (swaggerville) without busting cohesion. How many older wise heads can you have without losing overall athleticism. All these players have measureables (40's, bench strength ...) but they are people who have individual strengths and weaknesses. I know how hard it is to put together work teams , just imagine all this with compressed time frames, constant injuries and the maturity levels of kids who have been coddled to some extent even if at a low level. What a job it is to be GM/ Coach ?

You know I feel that these guys are different. My daughter used to work in the stadium kitchen and O'Shea asked her how the players treated her at the buffet lines. He explained to her that how the players treat staff tells a lot about players. (my daughter says that eating meat is usually on the players mind). The previous coach she never saw.
