25/26 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season Thread
The playoff format, while stupid, will not be as big of an issue as the 18 game season will remain to be. Any given season quite likely that almost 1/5 of regular season games will basically be meaningless in September and October for playoff positioning. The league is too small and the season too long to make this format work. So they can celebrate having more playoff games, but they will be playing a bunch of games with no stakes, lowered TV ratings and struggle to sell tickets depending on the market.

In the current system you might play the same team 3 times in the regular season, 1 in the preseason, and 1 in the playoffs. Now it could be 2 in the playoffs. That's exacerbating an already bad situation. An 18-game season to eliminate 1 team is dumber than an 18-game season to eliminate 3 teams. Round 1 doesn't eliminate any teams. Think of it as an extra regular-season game, because playoff games should always be win or go home. Teams 1-6 get a home playoff game either in the first round or the 2nd. Teams 7-8 get an away game. Team 9 is a goner.

Just to visualize the new play off structure I looked at last year's standings. Bold are winner picked based on what happened or a guess for the new games. 1st round: Divisions showdowns, 1v2 in each division: BC @ Sask, Montreal @ Ham Play-ins, 5v8, 6v7: Tor @ Cal, Edm @ Wpg 2nd round: Elimination games: Cal @ BC, Wpg @ Ham 3rd Round: Grey Cup Semi-Finals: BC @ Sask, Ham @ Montreal (don't know who had the tie-breaker between BC and Ham, lower seed plays Sask, higher play Mon) CUP: Sask vs Montreal West DivisionRK TEAM GP W L T PTS F A HOME AWAY DIV 1 SASKATCHEWAN y 18 12 6 0 24 472 409 6-3-0 6-3-0 5-5-0 2 BC x 18 11 7 0 22 559 499 6-3-0 5-4-0 6-4-0 3 CALGARY x 18 11 7 0 22 488 416 6-3-0 5-4-0 7-3-0 4 WINNIPEG c 18 10 8 0 20 459 424 7-2-0 3-6-0 4-6-0 5 EDMONTON 18 7 11 0 14 422 490 5-4-0 2-7-0 3-7-0 East DivisionRK TEAM GP W L T PTS F A HOME AWAY DIV 1 HAMILTON y 18 11 7 0 22 525 496 5-4-0 6-3-0 7-1-0 2 MONTREAL x 18 10 8 0 20 445 430 4-5-0 6-3-0 6-2-0 3 TORONTO 18 5 13 0 10 497 583 3-6-0 2-7-0 2-6-0 4 OTTAWA 18 4 14 0 8 417 537 2-7-0 2-7-0 1-7-0

I'm guess this is why Ottawa had no interest in moving their #1 pick. Ottawa Redblacks' starting centre Peter Godber retires from CFL - 3DownNation

That is correct. But that also means we need to fill the dime db spot without another DI. Woodbey and the griffin dime spot is gonna be tight on the roster. Hooper has a very good to chance to be a Hubert type fit.

I agree with the opinion that true professionals who play the game because they love it, besides getting paid well for it, always give 100 percent ...Deep down they're the backbone of the league...However there are guys ...and I know this for sure, take plays off...Very few can ever afford to go down that road, but there are some that can get away with it, because they are VERY GOOD at what they do....Will that ever affect a game to the point of a win or loss??We'll see how this new playoff structure works ....Circumstances can change with any club...especially when the injury bug rolls around ....When incentive to win is also diminished because of a clubs standing toward the end of the season, we could end up with a few 'yawners'

Does the AFL have only 9 teams where 8 make the play offs? This play off format does work... with at least 12 teams minimum. When you have a 89% chance of making the play offs... how does it not cheapen the season?- Blue Bombers -- 2025/26 Offseason -- Discussion Thread

JJ Taylor and Ben Dooley added to the retirement list. Not surprised at all about Taylor. Functional organizations have that communication so I think all the trying to assign credit or blame anywhere for draft picks is futile. I'm sure the scouts and gm brought a whole list of guys they were interested in and got coaches thoughts on all of them and how they might fit them in.- 25/26 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season Thread
Aussie Rules Football (AFL) have been using this playoff system for 25 years. I also love CFL football so I like more games does not cheapen regular season. How many times the past few years everyone game week 18 meant nothing and it was full of pack ups pretty much every team will have something to play for the last week. Also will have less match ups were one teams does not care and the other is a must win down the stretch.- 25/26 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season Thread
I don't believe it does at all. It's a long season and lots can change from may long weekend to November. Say the #1 team all year loses their starting qb and the #6 team made a few tweaks and went gangbusters to end the season. Which situation you want to be in? The entire summer is now just an extended pre-season. Yeah if you wind up in a 1vs.2 game you get a mulligan but you still need to string wins together in the playoffs to get to the grey cup. - Blue Bombers -- 2025/26 Offseason -- Discussion Thread
