Everyday America. Its a contagion of stupidity

Can't say the same prejudices don't exist within Canada, because they do, and they always have.

Agreed. Its the same hatreds but the targets keep changing. All those who have been or are potential victims have yet to realize that they have common cause in protecting each other from these bigots who are always on the lookout for vulnerable minorities to attack.

BCE Inc. is cutting 1,300 positions and closing or selling nine radio stations as the company plans to significantly adapt how it delivers the news.

The eliminated positions include a six per cent cut at Bell Media.

Bell says the job cuts are in response to unfavourable public policy and regulatory conditions that it can no longer outwait.

Set to shutter are:

  • Winnipeg's Funny 1290;
  • Calgary's Funny 1060;
  • Edmonton's TSN 1260 Radio;
  • Vancouver's BNN Bloomberg Radio 1410;
  • Vancouver's Funny 1040;
  • London's NewsTalk 1290.

Bell Media is also selling Hamilton's AM Radio 1150 and AM 820, as well as Windsor's AM 580, to an undisclosed third party, subject to CRTC approval.

Management positions are being slashed by six per cent, according to the company. There will also be 20 per cent fewer executive roles in the company compared with 2020.

An internal company memo on Wednesday says staff affected by cuts would be informed this week.

Around 30 per cent of the positions being eliminated are current vacancies that won't be filled.

In an open letter, Bell Canada president and CEO Mirko Bibic says Bell Canada expects to lose more than $250 million in legacy phone revenues per year, while its news operations incur $40 million in annual operating losses.

Garbage pile of a company.

This is so crazy, bigots of all stripes are coming out of the woodwork to freely express their vile attitudes in public, feeling so empowered to do so, they go hunting for victims.

9-year-old's gender questioned in 'gobsmacking' track-and-field incident, family says

A B.C. family has garnered sympathy online — and international media attention — after sharing what they described as an incident in which a man questioned their nine-year-old daughter's gender during a sporting event.

They say the incident occurred during a track-and-field meet at the Apple Bowl Stadium in Kelowna, B.C., organized by the Central Okanagan School District for elementary school students.

Heidi Starr said her daughter, who is cisgender and has a pixie cut, was preparing for a shot put contest when a man approached a parent volunteer, pointed to the nine-year-old and, mistaking her for a boy, questioned why a boy was participating in a girls' event.

CBC News has agreed to keep the girl's identity confidential to protect her safety and well-being.

"As my daughter was preparing to get up and throw, a man came out of the crowd, stepped forward and walked towards a parent volunteer and said, 'This is a girls' event — why are boys throwing?'" Starr told CBC News.

Starr said she then intervened and corrected the man, whose granddaughter was also participating in the event.

"Then the gentleman started insisting that I provide documentation in the form of a certificate proving that my daughter was born a girl," Starr said.

Starr added that the man's wife was also shouting at Starr and Starr's ex-wife, saying they were "genital mutilators and groomers."

"It was gobsmacking," Starr said.

"I said … 'Are you asking for a certificate proving that my daughter was born with a ****** [and] you need a proof of her genitals?'"

This is what a real man capable of verbally assaulting a 9 year old girl looks like, he's built to handle whatever she can throw back at him.

This **** owns the Motel 6 in Moosomin, next time I pass through, I'm tempted to rent a room and drop a giant deuce under the blankies, just for him.

What you may not know about this is that leading up to it, the first Black man elected recently to the city council had a racoon killed on his doorstep overnight and the reference was not subtle.

gut punch sickened right now. The number of times I've crossed that intersection......just musta not been looking both ways. Semis are ripping at 120kmh in that section, and they're not stopping on a dime. Horrific day. 9th worst MVC tragedy in Canadian history...

It is amazing that we don't have more tragedies similar to this one.  As someone who travels around the province frequently, it is surprising at how many times I've seen people completely misjudge the speed of crossing traffic on highways.

Canada's population is expected to surpass 40 million people today, says Statistics Canada.

The federal statistics agency's "population clock" uses modelling to estimate Canada's population in real time. The counter is expected to hit the 40 million mark just before 3 p.m. ET on Friday, according to a news release from Statistics Canada.

Canada's population growth rate currently stands at 2.7 per cent. That's the highest annual growth rate since 1957...

Canada's population grew by a record 1.05 million last year and about 96 per cent of the rise was due to international migration, the agency said.

BBC called it a "tourist submarine" and the searchers are almost ready to give up. Sad,

Two reasons for hope. First, they have 96 hours of oxygen on board. Second, they have SEVEN different ways to rise to the surface—multiple redundant ballast and air-bladder systems.

Unless they got too close to the wreck and were snagged on something. If they could have gotten to the surface already, they would have, I think.

Yep, from reading the earlier article posted it was unclear how long they've been running these tours and whether they've  done it successfully before.  Couldn't pay me $250k to go on that ride, without a proven track record of success to back it up.  Hopefully rules are established to discourage or disallow further ventures of this nature.  Question is, who has the authority to do so?

The Titan began sea trials in 2018, before undertaking its inaugural journey in 2021. Last year, it made 10 dives although not all of these were to the Titanic wreck.

Once detached from its launch and recovery platform, the sub's four electric thrusters help it reach speeds of around 3 knots (3mph; 4km/h).

In one journey, the company can go through $1m (£800,000) worth of fuel, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush told CBS News last year.

..........

The sub itself is extremely narrow, measuring just 670 cm x 280 cm x 250 cm (22ft x 9.2ft x 8.3ft), and can carry a crew of just five people - a pilot and four passengers.

While it is bigger than competitors, passengers are required to sit on the floor with limited room to move around.
........................

The Titan has around 96 hours of oxygen reserves onboard, but this will be affected by the breathing rate of the crew.

Much of the interior, the company admits, consists of several pieces of "off-the-shelf technology" which it says "helped to streamline the construction, and makes it simple to operate and replace parts in the field".

......................

GPS tracking ceases to operate properly when submersibles dive to depths as deep as the Titan does.

Instead, a special text messaging system allows the crew to receive instructions from the team on the surface vessel above.

Onboard, the pilot steers based on these instructions with a modified video game controller.

Mr Rush, speaking to CBS News last year, said piloting the sub "shouldn't take a lot of skill".

..............

A full dive to the Titanic wreck, including the descent and ascent, reportedly takes eight hours.

But when CBS correspondent David Pogue took a trip on the Titan in 2018, communications with the sub broke down and it was lost at sea for more than two hours before communications were restored.

..............................

Before the sub begins its dive, a support team locks the crew inside by closing the hatch from the outside and sealing it shut with 17 bolts.

OceanGate says it is an experimental vessel, and when CBS travelled onboard the correspondent had to sign a waiver accepting that it "has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, disability, emotional trauma or death".

In a press release in 2019, the company explained why the Titan had not been classed by an independent body. "Bringing an outside entity up to speed on every innovation before it is put into real-world testing is anathema to rapid innovation," it said.

According to BBC, there are several dives per year down to the Titanic. There are NO requirements for safety, although most submersibles have redundant systems. Even so, only about one in five dives actually reach the wreck. Not a lot of room for optimism.
