Who gets the axe by Monday?

Sounds like the Bombers need to make between 8-10 cuts by Monday to get down to the 65 man limit. Not sure of how many counters they currently have, but it's at least 73 and seems to be no more than 75 if I have it right - which I'm not sure I do. I'm also not sure they can hide people on the 1 game IR yet so anyone being hidden would have to go on the suspended list (which I guess is the same thing right now) or the 6 game IR.

If I had to guess right now ...

DB Patrick Hall

RB Bradley Randle

DB Vernon Kearney

LB Dominique Franks

LB Curtis Taylor

OL Corey Lewis

P Anthony Santella

WR Justin Veltung

WR Ezra Millington

FB Carl Fitzgerald

I'd imagine these are a few of the prime candidates. Thoughts?

Marve has shown a lot more than Portis imo. Marve always seems to move the ball and put up points. Portis has shown what exactly?

@DarrinBauming  9m9 minutes ago Robert Marve just told me he wants to make it clear he wants to remain in the CFL and in Winnipeg. He doesn't have NFL aspirations next year

Really surprised they cut Allen and Lamar, thought they both did well in game 1.

Even more surprised Patrick Hall is still on the team, though.

usually the one guy we have as a concensous cut around here sticks around.

They basically cleared out our import MLB prospects.  Bass is still here but I think he's been getting looks at WILL.  Pretty much confirms that Hurl is the guy.

From what I've been reading here Hurl was always the guy no matter what. He's Canadian and unless we somehow acquired Shea Emry no import is taking his spot. I firmly believe coaches, prior to TC even starting, slot out where the National's will be starting in the lineup. Only way it changes is injuries or if a National impresses so much at a (pre-selected) international position that he has to start ahead of the import will that change.

Lets face it - GM and coach work together to not only bring the players for each position, but the depth for that position as well. When a National goes down, you need another National to step in to take his place. That is all planned out during the Winter so no way no how does a Sam Hurl not make this team as a starter (excluding injury of course).

That's why some players we all think should be cut stick around - in the CFL it is definitely not 'Best Player' there are a lot more factors involved. One reason why I'd love to drop the 'National/International' rules.

So you're finally ready to admit you were wrong about Hurl?

I thought Allen would be kept around and Patrick Hall would be gone.

Clearing out the Import MLB's shouldn't be much of a surprise.  Hurl's been our MLB since the day he was signed.  Can't afford to have an import backup unless we start 8 NI's.  Even then, he'd have to be able to play more than just MLB to be useful.

Hall was beaten like a rented mule in preseason game 1.  Guess he's better in practice.  Still think he'll be gone by the end of the weekend.

Weakest RB and FB gone.  No suprises there.

Sometimes players look bad due to their circumstances. Patrick Hall was a mid-camp add, correct? Maybe they still see something in him.

Well maybe Allen and Lamar aren't committed to Winnipeg and Hall is? It's a strong argument for cutting some and keeping others don't you know.

Apparently Normand is looking good as well.

For the record: no, you may not sneak out onto the field and give him your phone number.

Too bad that Allen had a poor showing. I was hoping he could find a spot given his hype, but he clearly failed to impress.

Another example of college play not being the be all and end all of career trajectory.

Regarding Patrick Hall I think sometimes we as fans isolate a few plays from the pre-season games and view it as the entirety of the guy's camp effort without seeing the bigger picture.

A guy has a big punt return and then we're shocked when he gets cut a couple days later.  Or a guy drops a pass and we assume he's gone.  But maybe the guy he's competing with dropped 10 x as many passes in practice.

So the coaches have seen Hall in coverage dozens of times a day.  Then re-seen it and re-seen it on film at night.  And yes there's an element of "when the lights come on" to be considered.  And yes maybe he'll get cut before long.  But all I'm suggesting is 3 plays does not a man make.  Even if those are the only three plays we noticed him.

O'Shea says he needs to cut 5 more players by Sunday night. That's including non-counters etc.

Any guesses on the five? I DB and a receiver seem likely.

Why does it include non-counters?  They don't count towards the roster limit.

I mean he has to actually cut 5 guys.  Maybe I don't explain that clearly.

Couple dbs couple receivers maybe a rb like Scott

I think Johnny Adams has made the team so I would expect one of Bucknor, Bruce Johnson or Unamba could be cut from last years squad.

I don't think they cut Bucknor. Johnson maybe. Unamba seems most likely, unless they feel he's too valuable on Sts and versatile.

I think they like Unamba's versatility and special teams play. Can't see him going anywhere. With Randle moving to LB they really don't need to cut any DBs even with Adams starting.

They have way too many dbs and receivers still regardless

I agree but aside from Adams, I'm not sure if any new DBs have unseated any of last years guys.

Johnny Sears yo!

@PentonKirk: #Bombers have 80 players, excluding Dan West, who is on the retired list. So they had to cut seven players Sunday.

Dan West retired?

@Wpg_BlueBombers: #Bombers release six:

LB Sammy Brown

DB Patrick Hall

WR Lavasier Tuinei

OL Quinn Everett

WR Ezra Millington

DB Dan West
