Jerome Messam signs with Riders

Recommended Posts

@ArashMadani: Messam will likely spend this week on the #Riders practice roster while learning George Cortez's offence. Has to pass a physical today. #CFL

@ArashMadani: Saskatchewan was not the only team interested in Messam over the past few days. Per sources: both Stamps and Alouettes kicked tires. #CFL

Wasn't it the Alouettes who just released him?

Yep.

SHERBROOKE, QC -- The Montreal Alouettes announced late Sunday night that National running back Jerome Messam has been released.

The move comes just one day after the Alouettes dropped their pre-season opener to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in which Messam did not register a carry. The Toronto native was acquired by the Als in a trade with the Eskimos prior to the 2013 season. In 13 appearances last season, Messam ran for 565 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 121 carries.

He also hauled in 31 passes for 317 yards.

In four CFL seasons, Messam has ran for 1,882 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also reeling in 71 passes for 698 yards.

The 2011 season was by far Messam's best, as he ran for a career-high 1,057 yards and six touchdowns with the Eskimos, earning Most Outstanding Canadian honours in the process.  Also released by the Alouettes was international tackle Charles Goodwin. The team also placed linebacker Bear Woods on the six-game injured list.

Could be that the Als didn't want to guarantee his contract for the season.

Apparently Calgary was also trying to get him.  Two of the best teams in the league see his value but not the Bombers.

Calgary needs depth at RB because Cornish is probably still feeling woozy.  Riders didn't find the replacement to Kory Sheets in the offseason.  Has nothing to do with who was looking at him.  I am quite satisfied with the Bomber depth at RB.  Our third stringer is leading the league right now in TDs and rushing yards!

Calgary's ratio makeup is dependent on having a NI at RB.   Cornish is out with a concussion .. it only makes sense they kick the tires.

Funny how Rider fans made all sorts of fun for signing Kevin Smith but this is a great move for the Riders because it's low risk high reward.....Kevin Smith was low risk high reward as well yet apparently it was the dumbest thing the Bombers have ever done.  The only thing Messam has going for him right now is a passport.  Oh well see where this takes him/them.

Oh, *this* comment. Our third string running back is averaging over 100+ yards from scrimmage a game and just had 3 majors, the guy we're talking about doesn't play special teams and ... you think it's a bad decision?

but I've HEARD of Messam, clearly that means he's a great player!!!!

trouble is people forget that the CFL is 9 teams and used to be 8, chances are you've heard of everyone.

Good point - with Messam in the line up we totally would have won the first two games of the season...oh wait...

Well at least we would have been able to run the ball effectively in those wins...

So let's just throw a hypothetical out there, we signed messam lets say, who do we take off the roster to allow messam to dress? a guy that plays special teams right? messam doesn't play special  teams so... really, isn't that kind of counter productive to sign a guy like messam? we gain nothing but for him to dress, lose a guy who does play on teams. Makes no sense really. That's some poor roster management.

Simply put, Messam is National depth and offers "another" solution to ratio issues the team is currently facing.  The Bombers seem to ignore available high caliber National talent when it comes available and than struggle with the ratio when a starter goes down. It has nothing to do with "who is the best RB".  If they build up a stock pile of good nationals it would increase their possible solutions now and more so in the future.  This is what Calgary and Sask. have done to build successful teams and it seems to work.  There are only a handful of good National RB's in the league and like him or not Messam is one of them.

Scenario:

O'Shea: So Gerome, you're a big strong guy and I understand you'd like to contribute to our specials teams?

Messam: That's right Mr. O'Shea, that's right..

O'Shea: That worked out well.

So sign a guy and pay him more then you would pay any other RB on your team, have him play only on the Offense (which right now is working quite effectively) take away a roster spot somewhere else so you can bring in another ST guys and in the end not have enough money to sign a Canadian in a position that you actually need filled..... I see where you are going with this.

If this was a Canadian Olinemen or even a Dlinemen that is of actual value right now i'd be all over it.  But we really don't need a one dimension canadian back right now.  Hell Volny can do both jobs and is cheaper and younger,  Both Cal and Sask actually need a RB immediately to fill a void and it's the only reason they are looking at him.  There is a reason no other team touched him until now.

So we take out someone who has been a weapon for us at RB in order to play a national at RB and who knows how well he can even do that anymore... How does that make it any more of a solution than keeping our international runningback who has produced well and opting to solve the ratio problems by giving one of the defensive players who have shown good things this season more playing time? For a team that uses americans at the RB position signing a national running back who is only a running back and not a special teamer isn't a solution it's a frivolous signing made only because of name recognition.

It's just...I....

sigh

Are you sure this is the best time to play the "These guys don't know what they're doing!" card?

Are you sure?  Now?  Is the best time?
