You circumvent the cap, that's how. Right now, Zach is costing us roughly 10% of the cap & with Schoen going from a rookie cap to perhaps a $300,000 deal suddenly 15% of the cap is spent on two players rather than just one. Why do you think players like Ken Lawler are restructuring their deals? There's not enough money to go around.

That happens regardless of how much the cap is though.

Hampers in regards to amount of top talent you can maintain...

    How?

Even if we could double the cap, everyone’s wages go up (great for players) and you still end up against the cap and losing players.

A “marquee” player is the same thing. One guy gets more money (good for him), but how does that help you keep your players?

The salary cap is hampering teams with their small one hundred thousand dollar incrememental increases. It's just not enough. Whatever happened to single game betting as thew saviour for the CFL & each team making an extra million dollars off of it?

It can’t hamper teams if all teams have the same cap.

Even if the cap is doubled and salaries increase, you’re still going to see players leave via free agency.

I wonder if we’d consider bede actually. Great year last year as a kicker, can do all 3 jobs, biggest leg and best kick off guy in the league. Sergio is a better kicker, but bede might be cheaper. I’d really love to see a consolidation of the 3 jobs, even if it’s a di for all 3. But we really need to improve punting and kick offs.
Be hilarious if we re signed legs. The head explosions around here would be epic.

I don't know about being cheaper, but if we could not waste the roster spot on multiple guys that'd be great.

Though, how many globals do we need to roster?

It isn’t worth being this worked up about it.

    Meh, we're just talking.

I get booch's point. At this point in Jake's career, it wouldn't be super harmful to move on and replace with a younger player. But I'm also ok with keeping vet's around if they accept the reduced pay/playtime - as long as there's a balance and you're not hanging on to too many vets or depending on too many inexperienced players for reps.

And that's what I think this is. Maintaining a balance.

doesnt have to be a rookie.....but a younger player with upside...and we already have that Schmeckle guy...and the other one coming back with Last name starting with S....no need for jake....I get it..he a vet ...blah blah blah....but he is easily replaced...has no use on any teams, and is for a lack of a better word...just in the way now...

I get what you're saying. I'm going to disagree because it seems like we're going to be seeing quite a shift in the roster this year. We are going to see some vets either walk away of be moved on form and we're going to see a lot of younger guys (or FAs) come in to replace those guys. The shift is happening.

So having Jake in the room at a lower salary. I don't think that's going to get in anyone's way. He'll have his leadership/locker room vet hat on. MOS will undoubtedly use him to to talk about the way things used to be and how far we've come. His NAT status keeps him out of the way of any young import we may have coming in, and Lawson has already assumed the mantle of the other starter.

I'm wondering if they've talked to Mason Bennett representative already and found out he wasn't coming to Wpg so they figured Jake is better than what else is out there....??

Thomas has nothing to do with us reaching out to the Canadian DE's like Bennett and Kongbo.

They wouldn’t have signed him this early if he wasn’t gonna be a starter. U think he’s coming back to just not play? lol. They could have waited. He’s starting.

He was already transitioning to a back up last season.

Lawson is going to play ahead up Thomas. But it's DL, so there's lots of reps to go around. We also have two returning NI DT's along with anyone who's drafted to come in and compete for time.

poor signing...money that could have went elsewhere....Like retaining a young usefull Canadian with upside like BOLO....Going toward Mason Bennett....Part of that toward Schoen...or whomever and fill his spot with a draft pick with upside other than running up and down field on special teams...especially when there may be even fewer special team snaps now with possible new kick off rules....so dumb

majority of his sacks are the result of guys like JJ...WJ and others basically funneling the QB right into him....where have you seen him use speed...technique....power to blow up O-line guys to get a sack...very rare...especially the last 3..4 yrs

We can't just put rookies in every depth position either. There still need to be vets with experience scattered around.
