I don't know about die....but there sure was a lot of 'dead men walking' in Seller's wake...I heard one defender thought of just 'getting out of his way' when the 'truck' came down the field...Riders tend to have players that do/did that during a game when the going gets rough and tough.......

Riders still have those type of players even now.

Has to be a reason why he was available though.  Teams usually have their coaching staff in place by this time of the off-season and the Stamps are no exception.  The QB coach they hired in January bailed for a US college gig, otherwise we wouldn't even be talking about Baldwin.

It's curious that he was without a job in January so if he's that good of a hire, how come they brought in someone else at that point?  Obviously there are lots of factors that can go into that but I wonder what changed?

It's quite possible at that time he was still looking for a better gig and turned the Stamps down. QB coach in the CFL isn't the most lucrative gig. After the bowl games and end of the college season, there are a ton of guys getting turfed and a ton of potential jobs opening up. If I'm a NCAA coach I'm waiting to see what comes up too. Then end of March comes around and there really isn't a fit the CFL starts looking a whole lot better.

Baldwin is a much better fit for the CFL than he is for 95% of NCAA football programs. His offence is very similar to a CFL offence and that is not the case down south too much.

Whatever the reason he wasn't finding work down south is 100% irrelevant to the CFL though. His starting college QBs during his tenure down South:

Bo Levi, Mike Reilly, Matt Nichols, and Vernon Adams.

He is a guy that develops CFL QBs very, very well and that's what he is now hired to do.

I can't even believe Hamilton was in that deep on Brady.

Makes no sense to me.  So many better ways for them to use that money.

There was a pretty coherent argument made that the Bombers shouldn't have been that deep on BO either. Maybe we are undervaluing him here or are missing some key information in the big picture? Count me as one that didn't want the Bombers to pay what we paid for a RB. However, I, also, agree with you premise that he most definitely wasn't or shouldn't have been a priority type offer for Hamilton with the holes they needed filling. At any rate, we and a couple other teams have given/offered unicorn RB numbers to him so let's hope he earns it.

The guy was an OC at Cal and Arizona State. He head-coached some mid-major programs. Not exactly a big-time resume. Good get for Calgary but not exactly stealing him.

As a QB coach this is a really good get. His resume of grooming CFL QBs speaks for itself. Stealng? No definitely not stealing, he was unemployed. However, getting a guy that can groom QBs that can play at a high level in the CFL? Baldwin would be at or near the top of the list of every CFL team. So definitely a sneaky good signing by them.

  5. Not a specific old Bomber game related question but this seems the most appropriate thread to ask this following question. I was over on Facebook, and there was a posting about how the Bombers coaches and players had a meeting and decided to turf Sean Salisbury during the 1989 season. I don't remember this, or perhaps I have chosen to forget it? Lee Saltz did take over and play the final few games and playoffs despite Salisbury leading the East in passing at the time. I just thought we released him to go to the NFL? Does anyone recall this?

Don't fully understand why they wouldn't attend, are they being advised by their agents not to waste their time on the CFL, or do they think they're too good for the league?  If so the CFL has a serious image problem among college aged players.  If you graduated from college would you limit sending your resume only to the top employer and not cover your bases more broadly?  If good enough maybe 1 or 2 of these guys will kick around on NFL PR's for a few years before kicking back to the CFL or quitting football entirely. I can see why the Bombers emphasize picking guys who really love playing football over players just in the sport to make as much money as they can.

Still recall the many wasted years waiting for Christo Bilukidi and Andy Mulumba to give up their NFL dream and return to the Bombers, neither of them ever did, nor did they establish themselves in the NFL as starters, thus forgettable careers.  Contrast with what Pat Neufeld has accomplished even with a poor combine showing, establishing himself as a 12 year CFL starter.  I seriously doubt any of the OL guys skipping the CFL Combine for bigger things, will ever match his career.

Great video, especially when Neuf. answers questions sent in by Stanley, Chris K, and Jake.  He also sheds a bit of light on why they kept Tanner Schmeckle.

They are being advised not to attend because one bad CFL combine and the NFL will not look their way at all.

This sums up how they view the FB position.

"The retirement of Miller – he’s now the special-teams coordinator – and the release of Damian Jackson last month also means the team does not have a fullback on their roster. That said, it’s not necessarily an urgent area of need. The Blue Bombers often use a sixth offensive lineman in short-yardage situations and could also feature a bigger-bodied receiver in fullback-type sets, too, if need be.

“I would believe that as a group – Buck and his group but also JY (Jordan Younger, defensive coordinator) and the defensive staff – they’re always able to fit the pieces together. Do you ‘need’ a fullback? I don’t know. Would you like one? Sure,” said O’Shea.

“We all have our philosophies on that,” added Walters. “If you dress a seventh O-lineman, is he athletic enough to handle that? Sure. Can a bigger receiver do that? Maybe. You don’t need to reach for a fullback that’s going to play eight snaps a game.

“But we obviously don’t have one on our roster and Marty and Buck would sure like to have one. We won’t just grab one at No. 8 (Winnipeg’s pick in the first round) because we don’t have one on the roster. It’s certainly a position group we’ll watch and there are some interesting guys here, two or three fullbacks here and a couple bigger tailbacks we’ve identified.”

Of course you can find future starting potential beyond round 3.

Calgary have started two Mr. Irrelevants.

Your starting LG this year might be Eli.  Guess who was picked in the fourth round.

My Ti-Cats are starting a fourth round pick (Katsantonis) at safety this year.

Logan Ferland wasn't even drafted and is the starting LG for Saskatchewan.

Teams can start whoever they like when their NAT starters aren't particularly good or you have a guy like Eli that would have been a top 5 draft pick if people had known he was willing to play. In Winnipeg, our 3rd round or later will have very little opportunity to start in their rookie deal just because of our existing NAT starter talent.  Of course, a guy could be a late bloomer or fly under the radar, but counting on that would be a very bad idea.

I really believe this is the case, and not Walters suddenly forgetting how to gauge talent...

For sure. I looked hard at both those draft boards and I am not seeing any gems that we passed on. Just a butt load of unrecognizable names  behind our picks even a couple years after the draft. 2022 we only had one pick in the first 3 rounds and we took Tyrell Ford which is a really solid pick, and let's be real we are not finding future starting potential beyond the first 3 rounds....or at least that should not be anyone's expectation. A lot of people getting on about Schmekel and Bennett but I'm not seeing anything better behind them really. just looking at the round by round draft and I think every GM in these 2 years are probably disappointed after round 1.

I know it was Walter's and that draft strategy of late has not served us well...Did I say anything about Oshea?...no i didnt....so dont put words in people's mouths...but on the flip side many others as well as you also say Osh isnt soleyrepsonsible for the complaints about poor roster and Practice roster Management, and that it's partly the GM who is brubging in the talent...so you cant nit pick both ways either...I also know for a fact Osh is highly involved in the personell they pick via the draft....rgardless...the strategy of past several yrs of picking guys who dont amoubt to anything but spevial teams usage is flawed...pick the best talent thats left and maybe yu get a guy who actually pushes for a job

"As per Osh" were your words, not me putting words in your mouth but I agree that Walters has been part of our poor roster management equation as well.  I agree to pick the best player available, and I am not entirely convinced looking around the league that they didn't. This year is supposedly a deep draft, if all they come out of it with is teamers we will know whether they purposely picked teamer type guys or that's all that was really available when they picked.

I love doman/ringmaiden and I’m really happy to see the cfl in bc making a come back. But damn they got some whiners between the franchise and media.

I have no idea of the nature of their partnership on the draft, free agency etc. but I’m sure both had a say, and were probably reasonably happy with the hauls on draft day. And I’m sure both would love to have a better couple of drafts in retrospect. But I do get drafting for need on a dynasty with limited picks in low quality drafts.
I don’t believe any one would be making ego picks disregarding what the rest of the brain trust thinks.
I’m also sure we will be looking to restock the cupboards and pick high upside guys. This is a too heavy draft and we have lots of picks.

Weve made a lot of hard moves this off season that scream of an end to the old boys club. The drafts will be a big litmus test for camp and the season.

I would bet big money on us picking guys that would best help our club on every pick we've made over the past couple years. Unfortunately, the last 2 drafts did not have much depth at all because of the covid deferring.

I hope we dont pick "our kind of guy".....code for a plugger who will never be seen as a starter calibre let alone viable back up for the most part....and I mean picks 3 thru whatever....not in general before all the dbags start to chime n

but...but...practices hard...puts in the work....as per Osh...well wtf?!?...any player who isnt should be kiked to the curb

Wasn't Osh who made any comment about how we will draft. It was Walters. He stated that "our kind of guy" is one that is physical, tough, and loves to play the game. I see nothing wrong with any of that being a prerequisite for any of our draft picks. If you want to attribute it to Osh, and move the goal posts on what was said have at it though, I don't see Walters as a guy who is leaving talent on the board at the draft. Yea, he had a rough draft last year but so did every other GM. It was an awful draft year.

Winnipeg is also happy that BC lost out on the bidding for BO's services. I guess this is a win win....actually nope...the Lions lost and are apparently giddy about it.

A few draft choices may go back for their last year in college. A few will start the season on PR as development players.  It wouldn't surprise me to see a couple of the 2024 draft choices actually make the AR. We've lost a few Canadians that spent most of 2023 on the AR, so there are some open spots.

It also wouldn't surprise me to see a few Canadian depth players not make the roster in any form. So we'll see how our selections go.

Previously I suggested that we might try and trade up since we have 10 selections this year.  As an example, would we trade our # 8 & # 17 or # 20 for a top 5 draft pick?  Just spit balling.

Trading up or futures picks will definitely have to happen. We can't draft 10 guys and have any realistic shot at of having spots available for them so either trade for better quality or take some guys that won't be in camp this year.

Yep. Cept neither is even good at teams lol.

with this strong a top portion of a draft and soo many picks I’m sure walters will have his best draft in years.

Yea, that shouldn't be too tough. Two years ago he didn't have a first rounder and last year was just a bunk draft year. I don't think any team in this league is particularly stoked by their last 2 drafts.

I didn't put Mimbs on the list because he played only 2 years with us, granted he did lead the CFL in rushing for both. Wondered about Washington but wasn't sure, glad people mentioned him.

Blink was great but to me its Lewis due to a higher yard per carry and 4 Cup wins..

I'd have to go Lewis as well. Legend.
