back in the 60. 70's & 80's when that passing game exploded there was always a t least one starting Canadian who was an impact receiver. The Lions had Jim Young who was a thousand yard receiver & IMHO one of the Top 10 receivers of all time. The Stamps had guys like Rudy Linterman, Gerry Shaw & Terry Evanshen. The Riders had Bob Richardson & Jeff Faairholm, Bombers had Bob Larose, Joe Pop & Rick House.  Ottawa had Whit Tucker & Tony Gabriel. I guess my point was that great Canadian receivers have always been a part of  CFL offenses going back 70 years but I agree with you that the guys that play now have taken things to another level.

That description also fits Schoen to a T.
I don't know if this has been discussed much but Schoen took some massive hits last season - dramatic, nasty hits - catching balls that were thrown late, and seemingly off target by Zach Collaros. I say "seemingly" because you never know 100% when the timing is off a little, whether the problem is with the QB or receiver. But it was clear last season that Zach was taking too long to process where to deliver the ball. Contrast that with Dru Brown who was able to get the ball off quicker. So Collaros ended up  scampering around and made risky throws. Receivers really have to make a play on many of those types of balls. Would not be surprised if Schoen got fed up with getting hit so hard and often, TBH. Of course it goes with the territory, to a degree. But I could see him going somewhere where the QB gets rid of the ball quicker.

Schoen and Lawler are the two best receivers in the league.... with Mack gone. You can't argue this point in good faith.

I’d take a running game of American RB’s and designed Strev plays over Brady if it came down to affording one or the other.

Still under $400,000 if he hits every bonus.  Could offer Brown almost the exact same deal and be spending the same as Winnipeg or Toronto are on QB's.

Streve in talks with Walters about his return....Thought it was a good idea but didn't have much faith in it really happening....IF Chris returns here that would give us a very nice winning combo behind centre, and seeing how Brown is moving along , the move fills the bill....I believe Booch predicted Streveler would return ....his prediction looks like it's going to happen....Great call Booch if you happen to be lurking

I think going into the season with an aging QB who hasn’t looked good in fall weather in four years is gambling at the QB position as much as anything.

For a club that's paying ZC $600k and therefore tight in the QB $$ envelope - I don't see how Strevy would be any more affordable than Dru Brown. Both would want starters money.

I would imagine you can find a dozen American running backs who can do what Oliveira did in our system (hell we had a  American we cut who looked good in preseason) . Love that he's local, love that he's a Canadian, he was absolutely the teams MOP last year... but RB is the most easily replaced position in football IMO.

Yes ....hindsight is always 20/20 BUT I could see the potential early....You have to admit he had one helluva arm and those passes eventually had accuracy.....which unfortunately we didn't benefit from as he moved on...His rise to something special came in Ham.....He finally figured the game out there and his teaming up with Flutie for over 5,000 yds was quite impressive....Reminds me a little bit of Schoen and Zack when they get rolling...In any event Danny ended up having a solid CFL career and his being a part of the Bombers today is greatly appreciated

I won’t deny that he had potential, but he was hardly the sure thing with Winnipeg that people seem to remember with 20/20 hindsight.
His 1990 Grey Cup performance was one TD pass in garbage time with the team up 43-11 and the defender fell down in pass coverage. He had a 45% completion rate in his time in Winnipeg, and did not even become a full time starter until 1995 in BC, when he threw for 19 TDs and 26 INTs that year, then was let go to Edmonton. He became a back-up specialist in 1994, known for coming off the bench to pull out games, like the Grey Cup that year.
But his passer rating was middling at best. Even in his MVP season in 1999 in Hamilton his rating was a career best 92.4, and he was only over 80.0 four times in 17 years, while being worse than 73.0 eleven times. He only hit 60% in completion percentage once. He threw more INTs than TDs in 11 of his 17 seasons, and only once was his TD:INT ratio better than 2:1.
Now, he was good at piling up passing yards, going over 4,000 nine times. And he was brilliant at avoiding sacks in Hamilton, where 4 times in 7 seasons the team gave up less than one sack a game, including a ridiculous 7 in 18 games in 1999 (credit the o-line and his quick release for that). And he was a winner, having a funny streak of getting to every other Grey Cup (and winning every second time he got there) for his first few years (1990 win, 92 loss, 94 win, 96 loss, 98 broke the streak as he got to the Cup but lost, and then winning in 99 in his last appearance - his only win as a starter).
Bottom line, he was very good but it took more than a few years (and three more teams) after he left Winnipeg to hit his elite level. So it wasn’t an obvious gaffe when we let him go (although I personally was a bit disappointed).
If I remember correctly, it was a contract dispute with Cal Murphy that led to his departure. He wanted starter type money and a starting role which we were not going to give him (and neither did BC for 3 seasons after he signed there) and it got a bit personal, with Cal quoted as referring to him as “that little red-headed piss ant”.
One last story about him I remember. One of the Bombers star defensive linemen or linebackers of the late 90’s and 2000’s (I cannot remember who) mentioned when he was with Hamilton, that McManus would telegraph if it was going to be a running play or a passing play every single time based on his foot position pre-snap under centre, and he was unaware he was tipping off teams to it. Despite this, his sack totals against were astronomically low, in large part due to a standard three step drop and release.
And now you know……the rest of the story.

I'll bet that with Scott Milanovich as HC, and even with BLM reportedly restructured and Taylor Powell still under contract, that Ti-Cats will still be in on the Dru Brown sweepstakes, driving up the final price for whoever gets him. Bombers do have the leverage of being able to guarantee 50% of the 2nd year of any contract offer for Brown. Will that be enough to keep him? If we lose Brown it'll be reminiscent of the Danny McManus situation after the '92 GC loss where Bombers let a promising rookie go in favour of an old veteran (loved Dunigan BTW) who was on the downswing. And we know what happened after that - McManus basically tore up the CFL throwing strikes for just about every team in the league - except Winnipeg.

The truth is that many here. like myself, are concerned that O'Shea will continue to keep and start Collaros even if Collaros fades badly and Brown (or another QB) out-performs him. O'Shea's Achilles' heel seems to be his stubbornness and his favouring veterans. Good teams and coaches move players out when its time for them to go.

Doublezero got a reaction from Dr Zaius in Call it what you want … you need to move on from Collaros
It’s going to be tough for Bombers to keep Dru Brown without overspending in the QB envelope since we are already paying Collaros $600k in 2024.
But then again, we might have some slight leverage over other teams beyond the fact that Bombers offer an offensive scheme, personnel and culture Brown knows well.
For sure Brown is likely to get multiple offers in the Free Agency tampering window that starts Feb 4 and ends Feb 11. Of course one or two teams will go completely overboard with their offers for Brown.
But, under the new CFLPA agreement, any club that signs one of its pending FAs to an extension can offer to guarantee 50% of the second year money. So, depending on how the deal is structured (signing bonus, hard money, incentives etc) no team other than Winnipeg can offer to GUARANTEE 50% of the 2024 value of Brown’s contract in 2025. That’s a pretty good inducement to stay home, baby.
