I’m not sure the criticism of schmekel was unfair. He really was awful last year. I think it’s fair to say he was put in a position he shouldn’t have been. This year, he’s playing at a level that deserves that type of role.
Either way, I’m thrilled to have been wrong about him and look forward to what he does next.6 minutes ago, bearpants said:The problem with Schmekel last year is he had no business on the AR... that's a failure on management for not bringing in a veteran competent Canadian DL to take some reps... or a failure on the coaching staff to not adjust the ratio or take advantage of the nationalized American rule... either way, Schmekel should've been developing on the PR while continuing to "practice hard"... not playing actual games
Yup, last years criticism was warranted based to his level of play last year - and deservedly so. He has clearly stepped up his game and is rightfully being lauded for it.
Bennett also got roasted last year and that was also fair - if you step on the field as a pro, people should be able to expect a pro level performance. They aren't expected to be an all-star right of out the gate but they should at least look like they belong out there.

I just read Utah might be called the Utah Yeti??? That would definitely rank as the worst name for a team in NHL history and it is not even close lol....the cooler company could be a big sponsor though! Bigfoot is alive again!😄
To me, Yeti is no worse than Kraken but The Mighty Ducks still tops my list for worst name.

Some guys especially qbs need time to adjust to the pro game. If that’s all they think he needs, with his upside, it’s well worth keeping him around.
Personally the top of the cut list would include Blackmon, vlaghionos, kornelson and a db or two. If you don’t cut mastro I’d suspend sheahan and let mastro punt next game.
Seems like we have a few spots that’d be easy to free up. Leroux could be sent back to college as well.Leroux is already confirmed to be going back to school. He's just here for the experience.

Casey Sayles came into a starting role pretty early on, and would probably still be starting here now
He did start a few games in 2021 but only due to Stove getting hurt. When Stove was healthy, Sayles was the back-up.

Who is the color guy on that broadcast? Is it Mullinder?
If I were a Riders fan listening on the radio, I wouldn't be thrilled because you don't actually get any real feedback on who is performing and who is not.
Yes.
That's the way they like it - heads in the sand, thinking they are the flagship franchise and the team to beat.

Barriere's agent probably looking at flights to Ottawa right now.

Dude, there are literally people who are paid to do this.
And we are literally on a forum where we express our thoughts and feelings about the things those people say (or don't say).
That said, they are reporting on the names that most people know.
But training camp battles seem like low-hanging fruit. But I guess they don't want to sound like idiots when they hype up a guy that gets cut the next day.
Some of these do a fine job of sounding like idiots the rest of the year, why stop now?
Guy you reported on gets cut? Ok now you have some easy follow up questions (why were they cut, who's next man up? Like you said, it's low hanging fruit but they won't even bother. They used to have better coverage so what changed?

CFL field is longer and wider. Don’t think the kick return stuff is as big of a deal on the bigger field. In the nfl they kicking the ball through the end zones. I don’t think cfl kickers can do that here.
A few guys (like Bede) can and have kicked the ball through the endzone on a kickoff. The rule changes last year meant that it will be worth a point if it goes through untouched.

Maybe the Chadwick redemption ain't going too well ????
Or they know his appeal will probably not hold up and they need some sort of plan for the first 6 weeks (minimum) of the season. Arbuckle isn't great but he's got way more experience than Dukes does

Plus you got a couple spots open on O. Would be ridiculous to just bring 2 QBs brand new to the league then cut guys after who never had a chance to make a play. Strev atleast gives these guys a chance I’d imagine
Happens all the time.
We brought 4 QB's in last year (Cooper Callis, Billy Hall, Josh Jones, Tyrrell Pigrome) who were all new to the league.
Jones and Piggy only threw 17 passes between them over the 2 preseason games while the other two got released before those games even happened.

Carolina was half a period away from forcing game 7 after being down 3-0 but an epic collapse in the third period ends their season.

No discussion or concern about Parker seemingly being made of glass?
DB (and WR) are the least of my concerns. If a borderline starter like Parker is hurt, it just means one of the other 97 DB's in camp get more reps. Now if we were talking about a guy like Nichols, well that's a different story. I like Parker but he's not irreplaceable.

I think if you re-read what he posted you'll see that it does make sense. The cap helps, but it does nothing for sudden stops/impacts which make the head (and therefore brain) whip back and forth.
It makes sense but the same argument can be made for helmets but those are required. We know nothing will 100% eliminate concussions but if there's something that can help increase safety (without affecting gameplay) why wouldn't they try it?
It looks goofy as hell but it's not my brain being knocked around so if a player wants to wear one, I'm not going to criticize their choice.

If Biggie is injured for at least 6 games he does.
The cap also doesn't matter right now. There's lots of time to find savings (cuts, 6 game IR, contract restructuring) if they really needed to.

They should though. They are likely repped by a CFLPA approved agent. You'd think you would do a little digging on your career prospects, how the league works, the team they are going to etc.
Yep, they definitely should but we've heard about that kind of thing before. Off-field preparation like that doesn't always rank too highly for some of these guys. One of our camp QB's (Terry Wilson) just admitted he was supposed to come up to the CFL 2 years ago but didn't have his passport in order so it didn't happen & now he wishes he had gotten it done back then.

I mean the Americans coming in here as tailbacks realize that the incumbent is a Canadian who was just up for MOP? And we have a Canadian backup who has been here for more than half a decade?
There's literally no roster spot for them. They are coming in to try to steal a practice roster spot or a shot with another team. I'm not even sure they'd really consider them for return duty unless they blew everyone's socks off because they'll want cover for another spot through that role, likely receiver.
I'm sure some probably have no clue about the ratio or why it matters that the starter/back-up are Canadian.

Others have tried (Threads, BlueSky) - Threads is closest (IMO) but not enough people using it so far to make it a viable alternative right now.
