has there ever been another CFL team that wrapped up their division in mid-September? Usually we hear about teams resting guys in the final 2-3 weeks but the Argos have to keep their game fresh for six weeks of nothing games plus the semifinal bye.

some clean well-played football tonight.

Say whatever you want about the Elks but it's fantastic to have a true Canadian CIS QB succeeding in our league. There was never a doubt he was the best QB they had... their best shot at winning.
Hell, I root for any exciting young QB coming into our league, no matter the passport or team. The CFL as a league can't prosper without good QBs.

He needed great OL around him to be effective. He didn't make the Lions OL better or was a difference maker all by himself. The same with Desjarlais.
Isn't that true for all OL? Can any one OL turn around a line that doesn't already have the other pieces in place?
I think back to when we signed our GOAT tackle Bryant in 2014 and our OL was still terrible and got Willy killed.

On that specific play. It's one db that would already be out of making the first contact on Ouellette. It provided tape making sure it won't work for the rest of the year. Just bad use of it imo.
Yeah but say you're a DC and you're game planning for a big game vs. the Argos... now you have one more thing to plan for and one more thing the players have to absorb in film study ...and maybe when you play them the Argos run a different kind of play out of that alignment...
(I don't know anything about football, do coaches play the long game like this, selectively exposing concepts to try to influence future games?)

Have never been so glad to see a QB2 taking the field. Hang another 21 on em Dru!

battle of the QB3s.
TiCats scheming well against a raw CFL QB who maybe hasn't developed his D-reading skills yet ... hide the 12th man way downfield.
holy cow the cfl.ca play-by-play page is terrible. doesn't even show down and distance.

Calvillo was 41 when he retired iirc. Point remains, it’s very impressive to be an MOP front runner at 35-36 years old
For a lot of his career Calvillo had a wicked good OL to go with his fast delivery. The dude was low mileage for someone his age ... compare the amount of punishment he took to what someone like Ricky Ray took.
Man Ricky Ray took a licking and kept on ticking. You look at QBs like Khari or Matt Nichols or even Drew Willy who faded so quick after getting beat up and then you look at Ray who was never anything less than effective even behind shitty OLs ... RR15 underrated for toughness...

have no love for Mitch McConnell's politics -- his cynical manipulation of the Supreme Court and his cowardice at impeaching Trump over 1/6 means that Trump is going to ratfuck every federal election while he still lives.
but, empathy for a human who seems to be suffering cognitive decline.

Maier is taking care of the ball so far tonight, tho -- not throwing a lot of picks like he usually does.

we got a cfl barnburner emerging here!
-
Real basic question here: in previous seasons there'd be two guys listed on the depth chart who would get a game cheque but who would be left off the game roster.
Does that still happen in 2023?

Classic CFL finish looming. Riders secondary gettin leaky.

ooof, Evans. he was locked onto that corner route that got picked. lucky he got bailed out by the command centre.
Als would be better off with Dominique Davis, I think.

Crum didn't look right after that endzone hit.

Speaking of firsts, I don't think I've ever seen roughing the passer called on a sneak.
Piggy is high-reward, high risk. Missing routine sneaks and fumbling.

This Ottawa team is playing like Swaggerville. Turnover after turnover.

Everyone remember Onterrio Smith?
not well enough, apparently, since I mixed him up with Pacman Jones.
you know the Rouge et Noir are an Ottawa team because they sure are capitalizing.
Crum getting the ball out fast, slowing down that Alouette rush.

Argos at Bombers, The Big One

I haven't followed the Argos closely enough this year -- have they faced any big adversity? Tough injuries, position controversies, that kind of thing?
You could say that their weird backloaded schedule is kind of adversity, but they clinched so far in advance that they're going to be able to give all their key players multiple bye weeks leading into the playoffs.
I guess the early clinch is a form of adversity -- are they going to stay a high-performance outfit while playing out the string?
anyway, I'm so stoked for this week's game; outside of a championship game this is sports drama at its best.
