The problem was that it wasn't the same field turf that most other combine and pro-day testing is done on, so you can't make apples-to-apples comparisons. Apparently it's similar to the stuff that is put in gyms and training centres, but there's a huge difference between pushing a sled or doing footwork exercises, and doing speed tests. Don't know if installation played a factor either, but I saw a lot of guys slipping while trying to do the 3-cone and shuttle drills.

You're being too kind.  The turf was awful.   Think of the same type of material that driving ranges use in their tee boxes.   No underlay, no crumb rubber.  It was rough.

  2. Here's a preview of what to expect.  Hope to see many of you guys out there.

It was a smorgasbord of events across five days that provided the perfect fix for news-starved Canadian Football League fans.

The inaugural CFL Week in Regina last March was a blitz on the senses, allowing fans to mingle with stars of the present and legends of the past, while getting an up-close look at the next wave of Canadian talent during the Western Regional and National Combines of draft prospects.

And now that Saskatchewan established the template, Winnipeg looks to build on it.

I see that they're doing the 40 yard dash at the Convention Centre. Anyone know how they plan to do this? temporary turf? Run it on carpet? Seems strange to not do it at a field house with artificial turf.

They'll be laying down field turf.

  5. Winnipeg Blue Bombers sign defensive back Anthony Gaitor

WINNIPEG, MB., February 1, 2018 –   The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed International defensive back Anthony Gaitor. Gaitor has spent some of the past two seasons with the BC Lions while also signing an agreement with the New Orleans Saints following the 2016 season.

Gaitor (5-10, 185, Florida International, October 9, 1988 in Miami, FL) originally joined the BC Lions in 2016. He made ten starts that season, recording 35 defensive tackles, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), and one forced fumble.

Through his two CFL seasons, Gaitor has played 23 career games, notching 73 defensive tackles, three interceptions, two defensive touchdowns and two forced fumbles.

Gaitor played collegiate football at Florida International from 2007-2010, recording 197 total tackles, 11 interceptions, 19 tackles for loss and four sacks.

He was a seventh round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2011, and has also spent time with Miami and Arizona in the NFL.

  6. Winnipeg Blue Bombers agree to terms with CFL all-star cornerback Chris Randle

WINNIPEG, MB., January 23, 2018 –    The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has agreed to terms with international cornerback Chris Randle on a two-year contract. Randle was scheduled to be a free agent next month.

The Utah State product will enter his fifth season with Winnipeg in 2018, coming off an all-star season in which he was also named the team’s most outstanding defensive player. Randle finished the 2017 campaign with 60 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, one sack, five interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns.

“Simply put, Chris Randle was one of those players that we knew we needed to work something out with prior to February 13,” said General Manager Kyle Walters. “He is a leader in everything he does. He’s coming off the best season of his career and we’re looking forward to more of that in 2018. He’s a special player and an invaluable asset to our locker room, and I’m glad we were able to retain him.”

Randle has now played in 89 career regular season CFL games over six seasons, including 58 with Winnipeg. He has amassed 233 defensive tackles, 56 special teams tackles, three sacks, 15 interceptions, four forced fumbles and four defensive touchdowns.

  7. Guys, in no way am I trying to pump Davis' tires, or justify his spot on the roster.  I know nothing of the future of the backup QB position.

All I am merely saying is that the guy is still here for a reason, and in my own opinion needs to see a little more game action before determining his fate.

If one of our prospects comes in to camp and outperforms Davis, then a decision will have to made between him and Lefevour.

    We'll see what happens.

I remember Khari Jones father used to post as well. We had some interesting private conversations about football in general. What it was like for him as a Dad having a son who played D1 NCAA football at UC Davis & the CFL. He was interested in my son who at the time was going to NCAA football camps as a high school qb hoping to get noticed. He was a nice man but I lost track of him once Khari left the Bombers & finished his career with the Stampeders.

    Was this hootie?

    What were his posts about?

C'mon you guys don't remember the infamous retirement post?

WINNIPEG (CP) - Charles Roberts is lucky Blue Bombers head coach Doug Berry can take a joke.

As the Bombers finished practice Tuesday, a pack of reporters surrounded the running back to ask him if he had posted a website message last week that he was going to retire after this CFL season.

"No retirement, no retirement," Roberts snapped as his laughing teammates watched him walk briskly to the dressing room without stopping.

"I don't know how (the message) got on there."

Last week, the OurBombers.com website had a message from a Chuck Diesell1 - a name the six-year veteran has used in its chat room - saying he was retiring after the season.

How many players can the Bombers truly say we have the best at their position in the league?

Probably just Stanley Bryant and Travis Bond.  And it looks like we're going to let one walk.  That's too bad.

And the Oilers have McDavid, but I'd rather have Scheifele and Wheeler for less.

Damon Allen was raw but he had that 'wow' factor...  he came off the bench to win the grey cup very early in his career - iirc

I'd also venture that Calvillo was never 'really' a backup more like a 1A - yeah he looked pretty bad at times but he also had thrown for almost 8000 yards in his first three years

If Davis has not 'seized' his moment after 3-4 years, its likely not going to happen

The number of seasons is not as important as people think, when you factor in he didn't throw a single pass in 2016.

This was the argument used for Dinwiddie...  McPherson...  LeFevour...

QBs that have moved from development to backup to starter have all had a 'wow' factor in their first starts then they drop off a bit

I can't think of any QB that looked shaky early and then kept developing as a backup to eventually claim the starting job...?

Calvillo and Allen both had shaky starts to their careers after significantly more playing time than Davis has had so far.  Allen in fact had under a 50% completion % and close to 1:1 TD/INT ratio for his first 5 seasons in the league.

If you had an employee who was in training for 3 years and still felt he/she could not step into the breech and showed he/she could not, you would fire that person and look elsewhere for someone who could. This is not rocket surgery.

That would hold true if the coaches felt this way about Davis, but they don't.
