Not a lot of fresh talent here. Hope the couple guys brought in are good because Biggie is on the downslope.

DB preview from yesterday too https://www.bluebombers.com/2024/04/23/positional-preview-2-the-defensive-backs/

Offense lost but the D still allowed Cody @$%!ing Fajardo to put up 3 TDs on them.  Almost like it is a team game or something and not all the blame can be put on one player.

    agree on the D.

Don’t they still have that 35 year old punter from the Bahamas from last years PR around? Karl Von Schmitz or whatever his name was?

Ended the season on the pr (unless he was cut before idr) which makes him a fa, who we haven’t signed.

Liegghio's punting cost them a Grey Cup.  I think he was basically done here after that game.

Offence lost. You don’t win gcs in the modern era scoring in the low 20s with less tds than the other team. 2 games, 419 passsing yards 2 picks 0 passing tds. That’s how you lose gc games. Fajardo put up 290 3 tds and 1 pick.

It’s an offensive, passing league. The two loses blame starts and ends at qb. Other players and positions could’ve won the game for us. But we lost it on offence.

Jamieson Sheahan is currently the only official punter on the roster, unless they pick one up in the draft or the global draft, the job is probably his by default.

Castillo has been a full time punter in the league, he has 134 punts in his career. We also have the rights to 2-3 other global punters from previous drafts.

The real solution is to just not punt... like that game where we scored on 7(?) straight drives.

    Hell yeah.

and the far too many big returns against, and games where we constantlylost the field position game

Getting a productive defensive rotational player on the field for 18 gams, as opposed to a gimmick punter is well worth it

i think weith age...and being a yr older for 2025, and the durability issues of lastfew yrs it's probablybthe right move to transition now. Grant is great when he is healthy and playing, but is he at that point with age...and how he plays with reckless abandon just not worth struggling again if he goes out for an extended time?...Always will be one my favorite returners and pound for pound one the toughest...and strongest guys we have seen in recent memory...

Last year was easily the worst performing sts unit (sans k) we’ve seen under an mos team. It was nuts how much field position we gave away each game when trading punts/kick offs.

    20 minutes ago, Goalie said:

Could part of the issue with special teams last year be the coaching. That coach was let go and miller replaced him. I feel when the Aussie kicker was allowed to, he boomed them but lots of times it seemed like they told him to kick it weird. Could be why the sp teams coach was replaced.

For sure the janky scheme was part of it.

    2 minutes ago, Booch said:

you would think tho with a good HC seeing the issues...he would have made the call to say...make a change....and we didnt....which leads me to think Osh was full on board with that if not part of the main force pushing it...for the most part our teams have been good with the former coach...the ugliness and total dissarray reared up with the addition of the new punter

He seemed on board with in early talking about how we were trying some thing different. He has stepped in before to force adjustments on D. Idk maybe he wanted to give enough rope or maybe he thought it could work. Mos will give you all the rope you could ever want to build a noose.  Takes a long time to finally hang but it does happen.

we also didn’t do any fakes save for the horrific on side punt attempt. We used to keep teams on their toes last year we got real long in the tooth.

I think we will see a very different attitude and play style on both teams and D.

  6. 1 hour ago, JuranBoldenRules said:

Last year we netted 33 or so on punts.  I believe Castillo could do that.  With improved cover teams hopefully we are closer to 40.  Directionally he's a bit inconsistent.  But if it gives you another useful player on D for 20-25 snaps a game...potentially worth it.

Easy. And we wouldn’t have the probably 20+ shanks or ultra low yard boots we saw last year.

  7. 32 minutes ago, JuranBoldenRules said:

That Canadian punter doesn't really exist.  There'd be 9 teams chasing that player.

The only Canadian punter last year was Jake Julien.  Everyone else was Aussie or import.

    Could try Castillo.

Castillo is a fine punter. If you’re gonna have him kick off no point in carrying a punter imo. If we can get a really good global punter and kick off guy that’s solid.
It all pivots on how we draft though. If we can get useful ni/g dl for this year that’ll be huge.

Haba is a fast and can bend. He can get after the quarterback pretty well. I don't think he replaces Jeffcoat by himself though. Jeffcoat was such an all-around player and was the perfect guy opposite Willie. As we know Willie isn't the best defneding the run!

I think they should rotate Haba with whichever rookie american looks the best of the camp guys. Could be Garbutt, Waggoner, the new guy Chauncey Rivers or someone not yet signed.

As far as DT I don't think there will be much drop off from Ricky Walker to either Fox Woods or K Randall. I read somewhere that Randall had been starting for the last two years in USFL and played damn good there after we cut him so maybe he's the guy.

The DL is gonna be a mystery but I don't think its in a bad spot

Or a ni/g.  Hopefully we take a long look at that in the drafts. Could also look at kongbo who is still a fa. We also run a dt outside semi frequently.
I agree haba isn’t jj overall. Similar at getting after the passer but hard to be as good in the run soo early on.

  9. 5 hours ago, 17to85 said:

With Jefferson and jeffcoat I'd suggest that you are wrong about them looking for several years...

Hansen the best global player we’ve seen, kongbo who went to and stuck in the nfl getting a pension, plus Habba and we’ve cut/traded talented pass rushers because we’ve had a lot jam.

    3 hours ago, Noeller said:

Also how could anyone say Habas results are mixed when he's hardly played due to the guys above him and also poor roster management not allowing for more bodies on the DL...??

Started out with a sack per game till he lost the spot to Jackson. Ended at a point where in a full season hed a had 9-10 sacks.

    3 minutes ago, 17to85 said:

And before last year they had guys like kongbo and Hansen taking effective reps at end so again, been looking for a couple years? I call bullshit. Last year they found haba who did alright for a rookie but don't forget he was hurt too and then didn't get on the roster because reasons.

I guess my point is... your point is bad and you should feel bad.

Plus our use of guys inside out like sayles and walker, then going back through the massive amount of dt talent we’ve found. Dl scouting isn’t a problem, next to db it’s probably been our best position of trying recruiting in the walters era.

  10. 4 hours ago, Booch said:

I'm not overly concerned, but more curiuous as to how we go about the other end opposite WJ and how.who we use as rotation. Withe the Jackson stupidity now off the table thre is a good chance we can get back to a deeper rotation which will do wonders

We know we will be fine with WJ and likely Lawson as the main end and DT....If we choose to go with a canadian starter on dline,

Fox can be very good and isn't a raw rookie, and I ecpect Randall to rely push fo a spot and can be a big load in the middle, and as mentioned really like Woods...so roater allowing if we able to dress those 3...or 2 of the 3 we will be okay and have a way more active interior.

We know Haba can play and should only get better, but I still feel Garbutt is the better and may surprise coming out of camp....that being aid we may even dress 2 import ends to go with WJ....or 3 import interior guys, especially now with Ford back and the possibility he grabs a starters role in the secondary.

We have a few other real intruiging end prospects coming in as well, an hopefully we go defense heavy with our global picks as there are some actual ballers there this yr...so competion this yr is gonna be legit and real....and 1 yr out from a home cup appearance being a possibility is the perfect time to start the partial transition to young hungry talent....Camp should be very intersesting for sure

My main concern is on how we formulate the O-line and who we choose to use, and hopefully it's based on true talent, not a personal like/bias or the old reward system we have used in past yrs.....If guys like Schmeckle...Thomas....Bennett (if he doesn show massive improvement as his age now limits upside) Kolo and Kramdi (good role player and in-situ guy, but not a true front line starter) come out of camp as starters/hevy rotation guys we failed in the off-season, and will be again next spring trying to do an overhaul for 2025 possible home cup appearance. Wedefinately will be a younger, more hungry team, and will have a nice blend of vets...and youngsters

I’m not concerned with our ability to find play makers on the dl. It’s not the hardest spot to recruit and we’ve done it very well in the past, both with in the cfl from down south and in both drafts.
I just hope that we get unstuck from mediocre players and systems. I am encouraged by the moves this off season that this will improve as well.

Probably still have our usual “what’s he doing on the roster” guy. Hopefully not starting. Maybe it’ll be Schmekel.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the fifo crew manage with the largest amount of roster turn over yet.

Cannot understand how McRae was kept around as long as he has been, unless he worked for minimum wage. He may be multi-talented ,but usually that means he isn't real good at anything at particular.

Talented guy with the ball in his hands. But one of those guys who doesn’t have a great way to get the ball with out taking away from Brady. Good change of pace back but we don’t split Carries.
And to be honest we can get better backs, he didn’t take the step he needed to as a pass catcher. It’s tough with that kind of hybrid talent. Lots of guys who are dynamic but not polished at any thing.

Our QB stable is best in league.....people are under valuing Strev big time....and he got handed that "not a passer" tag really for no particular reason other than from what lapo tried to morph him into in his second yr...That signing is gonna prove to be huge.

Barriere as well is as legit a prospect coming to Canada as there has been in yrs...I was shocked we actually got him signed as heard he had quite a few camp prospects, but I think he took the Strev route and didn't wanna be a camp arm, with no real legit opportunity, and deal with NFL polotics...win win for us.

The beauty of this yr is this will help ZC immensely if not for the fact he is not gonna try to play outside himself like last year and have those forced errors...as he has a Legit guy now behind him chomping at the bit....and the heavy rotation we will see is also gonna add to his effectiveness

Havnt really went over the roter much as of late as have been back and forth from Cali, but looking forard to as some have mentioned what Thompson could bring, as well if Grant is not back Cruickshank, who is a lil more polished all around.

My guy tho who is under the radar and should be one to watch is Chris Smith....he's a legit as legit talent as we have brought up in yrs too, and can see him cracking the roster in some capacity...he is also a legit returner and was highly ranked as such for the NFL...legit break away speed and can be that multi tool guy that we tried to turn Mcrae into....But Smith is so much better.

Curious how we approach the global draft, as well as the CIS one...there are 2 legit dline guys in the global pool who I believe can step right in as a rotation piece, as well as contribute on teams...and I still have this feeling we are gonna do some draft day moves. This ys camp is gonna be interesting as there are jobs to be had, and actual talent brought in to take the spots, and possibly realy push some vets

Strev with buck is gonna be nuts. Plop didn’t use Strev with much creativity, he is just that dynamic a player. Team is gonna be a nightmare to prep for.

interesting quote from draftdiamonds scouting report

Synopsis: Eric Barriere is a stronger quarterback prospect than fellow Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams, who ultimately spent time playing in the CFL.  While he may not project as a first round pick, he is the type of player that represents a strong value and investment on draft day.  Barriere stands out as one of the top, if not the top, prospects in FCS football heading into the draft, and while he does have room to develop, he also showcases the work ethic necessary to grow.  His best fit is on a team with an older established starter where he will have a season or two to learn the system before being thrust into a starting role, but his ceiling is not that of a career backup

He’s a beast. The best first year cfl prospect we have, and we have a bunch of guys who were on nfl rosters and very well thought of.
He should’ve gotten way more looks down south.

Added former UAB WR Myron Mitchell today

His story is similar to most of the signings this off season having gotten a look in the NFL and a spring league.

He got into 1 NFL game with the Vikings in 2021.

Fun fact: the Birmingham Stallions released Mitchell on the same day they cut Chauncey Rivers.

Really good pick up. He made a Vikings team that had a good group of WRs, as a wr. He was a good kr in college, but isn’t a kr that plays wr. He’s a wr that does kr for touches.
Great hands, attacks the ball and makes catches in the smallest windows. Great body control and balance.

    https://m.facebook.com/UAB.Blazers/videos/myron-mitchell-top-5-catches-from-2019/599405780924055/

Itd be great if we carry two guys like that one as the 5th wr and one as a kr while being able to interchange them on both kr and the offence.

I will be watching (and hoping) for LaBarriere to break out and be good enough that Streveler worries.

Easily the best qb prospect we’ve brought up since streveler and maybe the best prospect qb we’ve brought up from the us in atleast 20-25 years.
Likely means he will be cut in rookie camp, or a final tc cut lol.

  16. https://3downnation.com/2024/04/17/dublanko-cracks-sixth-spot-in-final-scouting-bureau-rankings-ahead-of-2024-cfl-draft/

9ol in the top 16. That bodes well for the league. Though I think as many as 5 of those will be nfl bound for now. That still is good for us who need to stock the cupboard but don’t necessarily need a body in camp this year. I think Duguay is better than the 7th best ol, but it is a strong top heavy group.
I’m thinking 2-3 of those guys never reach the cfl. A couple more could be 2-3 year waits as well.

Man it could be a huge power shift if a team can get 2-3 of those guys too. If I was a middling team I’d be trying to pack picks in the middle 1st to early 3rd to try and hoard some of those ol.

McInnes had surplanted Whitehead last season and was starting over him. Not an addition really. Stanback's best days are behind him. A healthy Stove is better than Baron but Stove hasn't been healthy since 2021. Lions will be missing Hatcher for most of next year and he was arguably their top WR.

To be fair, stove missed half of 2021 too. I love the guy but I’ve got no expectations for him. He’d be a flyer at this point far from a projectable starter.

  18. 1 hour ago, bigg jay said:

Yep, plus it doesn't matter who they have in the backfield if they refuse to run the ball.  It might balance their offense better on paper, but it doesn't mean much until BC shows they're willing to change their play calling.

True, though they have even more reason to go with a good pass pro back which Stan field isn’t.
Watching Hamilton and bc consistently go after washed backs is soo odd.

Jeffcoat is the only real loss. Grey wasn’t a starter. Houston was benched multiple times despite his picks. Walker isn’t really that big of a loss either and Bailey was the 5th receiver.

The difference this year with jeffcoat is we get him for 1/3 less of a season. A lot of opportunity to improve from the guys we moved on from. Dl is one of those spots that’s easy to find high quality imps at too.

  19. 5 hours ago, Pete said:

Bc  lost fewer players than we did and did a better job, for now. replacing them.

    ie lost  Betts  >  Robertson

Rhymes> Stanback (giving them more balance)

             Whitehead .>   Mcinnis

             Edward -Cooper  > Ciante Evans

           Baron > Richardson

We were neck and neck with them in the standing most of the year, whether we repeat will depend on our recruiting

You think that’s a good job of replacing guys?
