Around The NHL 2016/2017

time for a new thread for a new season that begins today. Canada Day. Free Agent Frenzy.

Will the Jets trade Trouba?  Will they resign Scheif to an 8 year deal?

Will Boston, as heavily rumoured, offer sheet Trouba?  What about the rumours of the Jets in a three way deal with Edmonton and Avs?

Stay tuned!

  • Where did Bill get $395 million?!?

  • What an idiot.  I have no patience for things like that.  Should be zero tolerance, 100-game ban for first offence, lifetime for second.  That's not an accident, that's not something that just happens

Yes but as a few posters here regularly indicate we are in a rebuilding/development mode with no realistic goal of making the playoffs.

Unlike the Blues, Habs and Bruins who consider themselves contenders this year. Therefore expectations of the coaching staff is different.

btw, I can't stand this mindset

I don't see how it's not a realistic goal unless a man truly believes that Maurice has gotten 100% out of this team.  Because they are still "close" to a playoff spot.  A top coach could have put this team in the playoffs, this things I believe.

Agreed.

The first few years of failure under Noel were excused by a weak roster.

The last 2 seasons of failure under Maurice are excused because the team is young.

What's the excuse when & if this continues to next season?

Cant even argue heat of the moment since there is a very long (under the circumstances) period between the face off and his decision to slash the official.  He stared at him, thought about it and then did it.  Is it automatic ten games and thats it or is that pending the NHL dishing out further games?  I agree with you, I'd go at least the rest of this season and playoffs.

20 games good start.

You guys are crazy. 10 games are sufficient for Vermette. It was a really stupid thing to do, but it wasn't like he was trying to break his leg.

It all comes down to respect or rather lack of respect.

It's inexcusable!  It doesn't matter what he did.  The refs aren't players in the game.  You can't touch them.  Period.  10 games?  That's nothing.  That's absolutely nothing.  He didn't make a mistake here.  He made an intentional decision to attack a referee.  That's garbage.  A strong message needs to be sent, and ten games is not a strong message.  That's saying "Yeah, if you're really mad, go ahead and slash the ref."

Nyquist gets 6 games for his high stick on Jared Spurgeon.

Interesting to see how they handle this, considering the Nyquist suspension is still pending and it really sends the wrong kind of message if 1/100th of the violence is given a stiffer punishment just because it's against a zebra.

Wow.

Horrible.

Vermette get an automatic 10 game suspension which he can appeal, so it might be less.

BS.  It should be 100 times worse if it's against an official.

This may be an overreaction...

Of course it matters what he did. If he dropped his gloves and kicked the **** out of him, I would agree he should get a massive suspension. He gave him a smack on the calves with his stick. It's 10 games for disrespect rather than an "attack" on a referee.

barely touched the guy.

stern talking to should  suffice. (kidding)

Slashing a ref. definitely a short circuit there of some sort.

Won't matter as Chevy & Maurice will have long term deals by then.

Jaromir Jagr celebrates 45th birthday by recording an assist to reach 1900 career points. Now only he & Wayne Gretzky have reached that mark

You just don't get it.  You have no respect for referees and the job they do.  If he dropped the gloves and beat up a ref, forget a suspension, he should be charged with assault.

The refs are not players in the game.  They are off-limits.  Period.

We also get that it wouldn't even be a penalty if he did that to a player.  If a player got tapped like that and complained to a ref the ref would laugh at him.  So quantifying the incident isn't as easy as it might appear considering the only reason it is an "incident" is because it involved a ref.  The players tap each other on the butts with their sticks harder than that when their leaving the ice from warm-ups.

I would have liked to see a longer suspension because a) meaningful precedent has to be set at some point, and b ) the toothless CBA in place means it will be appealed and cut down to 5 games by some arbitrator.

The reactions of some people in the video are interesting - the ref takes a moment of disbelief over what happens before "yeah, he just intentionally hit me with his stick!" settles in as the conclusion and the hand goes up; Getzlaf standing by the box waiting on an explanation and the chance to argue the call seems to take a while to understand the call because what he's being told doesn't make any sense (rightfully); Carlyle wants to yell at the refs because that's how he's wired but he realizes he can't, so he just doesn't know what to do with that emotion.

I don't usually wade into pure conjecture, but I'd hazard a guess that such an unhinged reaction from Vermette could mean that things aren't right on the homefront.  Before you snap you usually have to get wound pretty tight.
